I am looking into renting points for the first time. 11 Month window will be opening soon. Because there are 5 of us the only studio room we can get is the Grand Floridian, which is great becuase that is what we want. But since we have no other options on location for a studio room, I was wondering what the chances are that I will get a room by renting points. 50/50? Better or Worse? Just asking for opinions on our chances. Thanks

If you go through a company that deals especially or exclusively with DVC rentals, your odds are better than just kind of fishing out there on your own. Plus, they're reputable companies so there's far less of a risk of trying to do a rental transaction and something going wrong or your renter getting fishy. Most DVC owners looking to rent out their points seem to be doing it through David's DVC rentals or DVC Rental Store.

We went through David's for our recent (first) rental. They didn't have a member with the points we needed (for a 2-bedroom villa at Wilderness Lodge) at the 11-month mark. Neither did DVC Rental Store. Both of them put me on their waiting lists, and within a week, David's had a new member join who had the necessary points, so we got the reservation we wanted, after all.

I should mention that both companies were courteous, patient, prompt and professional in their communications with me, and also very up-front about the fact that they didn't have a member that could satisfy our request at 11 months out. As such, they didn't try to create false expectations -- and by doing so, their professionalism exceeded my expectations!

I don't know your chances, but if your request can't be met at 11 months out, I would suggest asking to be put on the "waiting list." All it takes is a new DVC member listing their points with one of those companies for a "no" to become a "yes." Keep in mind, though, that because the Grand Floridian is the newest, hottest DVC property, it may be one of the toughest ones for which to get a point rental right now.

If your primary reason for considering Grand Floridian is the higher sleeping capacity, I'd recommend investigating a One Bedroom at some of the less expensive DVC properties. For a variety of factors, renters have thus far been able to ask a premium price for Grand Floridian points rented at 11 months. VGF is also the most expensive DVC property in terms of the points required per night for a room.

A Standard View Studio at VGF runs 21 points per weeknight in Choice Season. If you are forced to pay a rental rate of $16 per point, that's $336 per night for a Studio.

Meanwhile you could get a Standard View One Bedroom at Animal Kingdom Villas for 28 points per night or Old Key West for 27 points. At a lower price of $13 per point, the difference is pretty negligible for a much nicer room which also sleeps 5 guests.

I tried to rent points at VGF for a studio (standard view) for early January. I submitted my request right at the 11-month mark (February 7) to both David's AND DVC Rentalstore. Neither of them had members that could rent me the points at the 11-month mark - not surprising since it's the newest resort, so it makes sense that anyone that has bought in probably doesn't want to rent out their points just yet.

The plan was to wait until the 7-month mark when they could use other owners' points (those who rent out points but don't own at VGF). Unfortunately over the next couple of weeks all of the studios at both VGF and Bay Lake Tower (my second choice) were snatched up, so I was totally shut out. I ended up renting points at a different resort and am happy with what I got.

Just a sidenote...both David's and DVC Rentalstore got back to me quickly to let me know that they didn't have the points to rent out. But David's was pretty stellar with the communication after that point, letting me know very quickly that VGF and Bay Lake Tower were full so that I could get a new request in quickly. DVC Rentalstore did not keep me updated like that, so I'm definitely sticking with David's going forward (the exception being when I need to rent points for a one- or two-night stay...David's only rents out points if you need 66+ where DVC Rentalstore doesn't have a minimum).

I hope you have better luck getting a VGF studio than I did!

We used DVC Rental Store and really liked them. We've used them twice adn were able to get both resorts we wanted both times, first at VWL and second at BLT. When we stayed at VWL, we traveled in May and I dion';t think we booked until January? So it definitely wasn't 7 or 11 months out. For BLT, we went in September so it was slower and all 4 of the resorts we had in mind had availability.

One thing I like about DVC Rental Store is they don't charge you anything up front where David's does. they do refund it though if they don't have anything available for you but I just don't like paying up front. Some don't mind it though. To each his own!
