PO: Riverside Blues (Gripes)

I just got back from WDW and figured some of you might want to hear my evaluation of things as a long-time visitor and fan.

9/14 - Arrival at Port Orleans: Riverside
I've stayed on property all seven times I've been to WDW and have tried someplace different each time. We've stayed at PO:FQ before and loved it. I've heard several people here rave about RS and I knew it was well-themed, so we tried it this time.

A little background...
I've stayed at Fort Wilderness, WL, Polynesian, CBR, PO:FQ, and The Disney Inn. The only one I wasn't thrilled with was CBR. The theming there is merely okay and the place is so spread out you have to walk forever to go anywhere.

Anyway, Riverside's theming is well done and the pools and grounds are well designed and kept. Boatwrights' is an excellent place to catch a relatively inexpensive, tasty full-service breakfast. The lobby and surrounding environs are well designed. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that's the extent of my praises.

The whole complex is in very serious need of a rehab. I first noticed that the metal railings at the "ticket booth" check-in counter were in need of repainting. It was chipped off in several places, and the paint had hid the detail of the metal pieces under several thick repaintings.

We were located in the Oak Manor section of Magnolia Bend. These areas are themed to look like plantation mansions of the old south. I don't remember plantation mansions having tons of missing shingles or being in terrible need of repainting, but Oak Manor surely had these things. One of our room doors had a huge discolored circle on it where the paint had been chipped off, exposing two other coats that were both different colors from what it was now.

We had four rooms, and each one had a different lightbulb in the room burnt out. These were obvious and were never replaced during the length of our six night stay. The "twin-globe" light fixtures above each bed in our room both had cobwebs going between the globes, obviously never dusted. The tub had a large black spot in it where the porcelain had chipped off. The bathroom wall had a nice stain by the lightswitch and the light in the bathroom took thirty seconds to get bright. The remote control in one room refused to work even after new batteries.

My other complaint with this resort is the same one I have with CBR. You have to walk a "country mile" exposed to the elements in order to get to the lobby, dining areas, or main pool. This isn't so bad except when it is raining for a good portion of your stay. My wife and I both bought the refillable mugs (which went from $9.99 to $10.99 during our stay, btw) and ended up not using them as much as we would have liked because it was either pouring down rain or we were too tired after a day in the parks to make the long trek to the lobby area and back in the humid heat. We argued with each other over who would have to make the trip each time we did go.

Needless to say we will not be staying at RS again. FQ is much more closely packed and appeared to be in much better condition. Of course, Wilderness Lodge has been our favorite resort so far, but budgeting concerns with members of our party prevented us from using it this time. I hated writing this, but I feel it needs to be shared. I went with a group this time who had not been to WDW in many years (and had never stayed on property) and I was embarrased because I had bragged on WDW facilities before we went. The overriding response from them was "not worth the extra money" and this time I couldn't argue with them.

I hope and pray that Disney stops being so darn cheap with the parks and resorts, and gets back to the core values that made them so great. I'll be posting about my experiences in the parks in a few days.

Thanks for reading.

Okay, I stand corrected, another error on my part put down to the trip home

At least you did have a good time which is the whole point (even if your room was a little poor)

Usually I do miss my home, but not this time!!!! And by the way Gibson, I LOVE yur avatar. I Am a bit of a princess buff myself, in case you hadnt noticed!! Belle

I couldn't have said it better myself - Any day at Disney is better than being at work!

Nice to hear you LOVE my avatar - it was quite a lucky photo opportunity last week

:lookaroun LORD ALFRED, I AM AFRAID I HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU ON SOME OF THESE POINTS. I TOO HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE REMOTE IN OUR ROOM LAST TIME. THE WALL PAPER WAS IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT, THE TOLIET NEEDED TO BE FLUSHED TWO -THREE TIMES TO WORK PROPERLY OH MY!!! :fork: NOT TOO GOOD WITH A 5 YEAR OLD---- AND THE SHOWER CURTAIN LOOKED LIKE IT HAD BEEN LEFT IN A DRYER AND WAS VERY WRINKLED (PLASTIC) WE WERE IN OAK MANOR, I BELIEVE, MAGNOLIA AREA---- TOOO I THINK THIS IS ONE OF THE CLOSER AREAS. AT LEAST TO A BUS STOP. MAYBE THAT IS WHY IT IS SOOO RUN DOWN. ( LAST STOP BEFORE LEAVING THE COMPLEX)

ONE OF MY PET PEEVES--- WHY!!!! DO THE BUSES LET YOU OFF SO FAR FROM THE MAIN BUILDING WHEN THE STOP CLOSEST TO THE STORE IS NOT BEING USED!! ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS AFTER THE PARKS ARE CLOSED??? DO ANY OF THE CM'S KNOW WHY!!!

WE HAD ONE BUS DRIVER, YAH, WHO DID LET US OFF AT THE FIRST STOP, KUDOS TO HIM-- A TOUGH JOB DRIVING ALL DAY AND LISTENING TO ALL THE ??? AND PROBLEMS!!! BUT!!!!! WHY ADD TO OUR LONG!!!!! WALKS----

I LOVE STAYING ON DISNEY PROPERTY, WOULD NOT SEEM LIKE BEING AT DISNEY WITHOUT DOING SO--- HOWEVER, THE RATES ARE QUITE HIGH FOR THE AMMENITIES THAT YOU RECIEVE. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SHAMPOO,HAND LOTION, SHOWER HATS ETC WE USED TO GET?? I ASKED ONE OF THE HOUSEKEEPERS AND SHE SAID THEY JUST DID NOT/HAVE NOT HAD ANY!! AND FORGET ASKING FOR ANOTHER NOTE PAD!!! :fork: SHE DID WHAT SHE COULD WITH WHAT SHE HAD. THEY CAN NOT GIVE WHAT THEY DO NOT HAVE---- :(

I DID MAKE THE POWERS THAT BE AWARE OF THE OTHER PROBLEMS--- THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOTE IT BUT NOT MUCH COULD BE DONE---- GAVE US A NEW REMOTE/SLOW BUT WORKED, CHECKED THE POTTY,NO HELP--- CHANGED THE CURTAIN FINALLY-- DID THEY NOT HAVE ANY?:veryconfu

OH WELL, THEESE THINGS WERE A PROBLEM BUT!!!!:fork: MY BIGGEST DISSAPOINTMENT WAS/IS THE EARLY!!!!!!!!!!!!! CLOSING HOURS!!! I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON:hammer: AND I CERTAINLY DO NOT WANT TO GET UP AT 7 AM ON MY VACATION!!!! I KNOW THEY SAID ATTENDANCE IS LOW, BUT EVERYWHERE WE WENT THE LINES WERE LONG FASTPASS'S WERE GONE AND IT WAS VERY TIREING TRYING TO RUN AROUND TO GET A FEW THINGS DONE!!! "6:00" IT IS NOT EVEN DARK YET!!!! (MK) STAFF PROBLEM??? OPEN AT 10-11 STAY OPEN TO 9-10- SO WE CAN SEE THE LIGHTS AND ETC.

COULD KEEP GOING ON-- BUT--- LOVE DISNEY CAN NOT WAIT TO GO BACK.:sohappy: HOPE THIS DOES NOT RUIN A NEWCOMERS STAY!!! JUST BETTER TO KNOW THESE THINGS THAN NOT HUM---

WISH THEY WOULD/COULD GO BACK TO THE QUAILTY WE HAD WHEN IT WAS JUST THE MAGIC KINGDOM AND YOU COULD GET A SUITE AT THE CONTEMPORY FOR "$59.00" A NIGHT!!!:D YES. !!!!!! ( RIDE THE MOMORAIL BACK AND FORTH, WITH THE STROLLER!!) REMEMBER THHE 24 HR GAME ROOM ?? TOOOO---I KNOW I AM DREAMING--- STILL WAITING TO WIN THE LOTTERY SO I CAN STAY FOR MORE THAN 5 DAYS-- AT WL , MAYBE 2 WEEKS PLEASE !!!!! ( MY NEW FAVORITE) HAVE A GREAT DAY

I just came home yesterday from Riverside and I thought the place overall was great. I did have a few disappointments though. I printed off the mousekeeping envelopes and had told my children how they will do special little things for you. The first day, they stood the pillows up instead of laying them down (like you would do shams) we left all the stuffed toys on the table so they would have some props but they were never touched. Each day after that, I did something special trying to spark their creativity. One day, I put the envelope in stitches hands, another I lined the stuffed animals along the headboard etc...each night, we would come home to nothing. The kids were disappointed as we walked by other rooms to see their animals lined up in the window peeking out. Also, the shower curtain had black splotches at the bottom of it on the inside, like it was molding. The maid also turned off our air conditioner one day and when we returned it was miserably hot in the room. Other than that, we loved it. I did not complain about any of the things...I figured a resort that size, they were lucky to keep up :) I was just happy to be there! We knew going there about the walk and we enjoyed it. Next trip we are staying at the Grand Floridian though!

i would make sure hotel management or gests services knows about the disapointments. they may be dealing with one group of lazy workers there.

First off I am a true Disney Fan. However, I think the original point of the post was...why pay Disney Prices and receive Super8 service! We haven't stayed at this particular resort. Our last trip in May was to ASMovies two rooms, 5 kids...
Our walk to the pool, laundry, food court, and bus stops..was not too far..but we were in Dalmation Bldg. #1 (and I am a former postal worker used to walking 5miles everyday..rain, snow, StLouis summers etc) so a 2 minute walk anywhere doesnt seem so far to me LOL! But I totally agree for the prices you pay even for Value resorts you expect clean rooms with everything in full working order..you shouldn't have to spend any of your time calling housekeeping, maintenance etc... UNLESS you need extra towels for the pool..that sort of thing. Complaining about the condition of the rooms, housekeeping services etc..doesn't mean someone isn't a Disney Fan it just means that they were an unhappy consumer! Disney needs to know about the problems so that future guests wont have those same issues. Its very difficult to get some people to stay onsite for the first time ...spend the extra money to stay onsite..if they see these conditions do you think they will become repeat customers? Sorry I didn't mean to rant so long.

Port Orleans-Riverside

Just returned today from Family Trip of ten (10) where we stayed at PO-Riverside. I must say we loved every minute of it! Didn't stay at the resort long enough to be perturbed by paint, lights, etc. as we were busy in the parks. Yes, there is a lot of walking at this resort, but it gives you a chance to enjoy the theming. This is really a beautiful place! and quite frankly, I did see lots of folks there who certainly needed the exercise. Once again, dollar for dollar, we came out on top of this deal! Can't wait to go back!:sohappy:

Dwarful I absolutely agree with you. Disney should know about stuff like that, but I would tell the management while I was there so they could correct the problem and I can go on with my vacation in the Deep Antebellum South without the distractions of dirt, burnt out light bulbs etc. Im sure some Disney people read these boards, but not necessarily the management of PO Riverside. And even if it is, I Am sure they would be reading this on their time off!!! I stayed in Parterre Place and seemed to have none of those problems when I went in May. If I did, I would've contacted the front desk and asked for it to be rectified. I have never had to go any further than a polite phone call in Disney!! They are always wonderful with me!! Belle
