Please help us decide on time frame

OK. So we were originally planning on going to WDW August 6-15 of 2012 but are not quite sure we want to do that anymore. We were thinking this would give the kids (we have 4) a good vacation before they went back to school. We are now thinking about going May 14-23. Simple reason, we love the Flower Festival. We have gone the past 2 years and really love it. The only problem is the kids don't get out of school until June. Not really a problem as we can have the kids either do their work ahead of time or catch up when we get back. So, what would you do?

depends on how you feel about taking your kids out of school. how old are they?

my folks took me out of school for vacation (if memory serves) roughly once a year. and quite frankly, i never found a teacher who wouldn't give me homework in advance or something i missed that i couldn't catch up on. but that depends on each of your children, how they'll handle that, etc.

my two cents: if your kids can keep up with catching up on the work they'll miss and you'd rather go in may, do it. looking back on my childhood, i certainly remember the great memories i have from the times when my parents pulled me out for a few days in disney world rather than the lesson i missed that i was able to catch up on right away. but again, parents have varying views on that.

I'm a teacher, and I say as long as your kids can keep up with the work they will miss, then go in May for the flower festival! It's always so beautiful!

Thanks. That's what I was leaning towards. We have taken them out for two weeks the past two years but my oldest son went to middle school this year. I hope that won't be a problem. I think we're gonna stick with May though. August just seems to hot.

We went in September once and pulled my daughter out of school. After that trip she said she would never want to go and be pulled out of school again. Not because she doesn't want to miss school, but because she didn't feel like it was a complete vacation for her because she had to do an hours worth of homework each night during the trip. She was only in 6th grade then. We live in New York and the kids don't go back to school until after Labor Day most years so now we go at the end of August and everyone gets to really enjoy the vacation.:sohappy:

All schools /teachers / kids are different.
My DH is a school teacher (4th grade)...he does NOT discourage families from taking their children out of school for ANY vacation. He helps the kids as best he can. Their school policy is "all work is made up when you return" ... pros & cons. blah blah...

We took our kids out of school twice in 4 years. One trip was early November the other was mid March. Both trips were "short" school weeks ... meaning inservice days/report cards/ NO SCHOOL for part of those weeks so we had no problems getting caught -up!!!

Made memories we will cherish forever:)

Look for discounts and go for it!

As long as your kids are doing well in school and will make up the work, I say go for it. We have done this with my son and it's nice to be able to visit the park when it's not as busy and the flower festival is beautiful. Enjoy!
