Please help-taking 10 month old. Not sure which stroller to take!

Hi everyone! We are going in May with our 10 month old. We are trying to figure out which stroller to take. We have 2 choices-a Peg Perego and an umbrella stroller. The Peg is nice because the seat reclines allowing him to nap comfortably. It has ample storage underneath for bags, etc-he still needs a diaper bag. The downside is that it's HUGE! I'm talking, it's long and difficult to see over the edge of the seat to where the wheels are located. I like using it, but it's not compact. The umbrella stroller is lightweight and folds easily. There is a basket underneath, but it is virtually useless. I could get a blanket in it. I am concerned about it not reclining enough to allow him to sleep comfortably. I'm not sure what his schedule will be in 2 months, now he still takes 2 decent naps and can sleep just about anywhere. He fell asleep in the umbrella stroller while at the mall the other day, but it was for maybe an hour. I would like to take the umbrella stroller, but I am afraid he will be uncomfortable if he wants to stretch out. He is a very nosy baby and loves to see everything that is going on. Any input would really be appreciated since this is my first baby and he is just starting with the umbrellas.

My honest opinion is the umbrella stroller. We ended up buying one there for $40! Folding them up to get on buses really stinks! If you aren't using buses, I say the deluxe stroller is better so the baby can sleep. I agree that my bigger stroller would've been a huge pain though! The ones at the parks are great to rent while at the parks, and that's what I would do if we were flying next trip. Bring umbrella, rent in park. Since we are driving, we are bringing both but I will probably still rent the park stroller.

I agree with Dagger, but I understand the need for a comfy nap as well (even though I've got 30 years on your son).

If you're going to be using the buses and monorails a lot then use the umbrella stroller. If not, then bring the big one.

If you see he needs more space, you can always rent one at the park, though I don't think the rentals are really made for 10 month olds. IMO, they're built for ages 2-6.

Hope it works out for you. Have fun.

This is an area where unfortunately there is no good middle ground. There is no question that the umbrella strollers are easier to get on and off the buses and trams but the larger strollers are better once you are in the parks. We elected to go with the larger stroller (in our case the Jeep all terrain) simply because we found the the 1/2 an hour inconvenience on the tram is worth the added convenience while at the parks.

Here's my .02:

We went last May with an 8 month old (we drove) and brought both our Peg and an umbrella stroller.

Everyone is right about it being a pain to bring the bigger stroller on the bus. HOWEVER. What is 30 seconds of akwardness getting on/off the bus as to an entire day of uncomfortableness?

We ended up taking our Peg into the parks every day... and boy were we glad we did. Our little gal napped just fine, she was able to relax and really enjoy herself comfortably not to mention we had a place to put her bag full of snacks, diapers change of clothes, etc. Something we would not have wanted to carry around all day.

Long story short the one or two times we took the umbrella stroller anywhere she hated it. We stuck with the Peg and were very glad with the decision.

Unless you're traveling by yourself and have to tote around everything by yourself, my suggestion is one person take care of the baby on the bus, and the other holds the stroller. No big deal. :)

Happy baby = Happy Mama.

Happy Mama = Everyone's Happy. ;)

Thanks for the replies! I think I agree with Master Yoda. We will most likely bring the big stroller since I am more focused on his comfort than our convenience. When he's a couple years old and needs to nap at the resort then we will take the umbrella stroller. I feel he is still so small-even though he isn't-that he needs comfort!

Thanks jesserin! We went last year when he was 10 weeks old. We flew and had our carseat and a carseat/stroller adapter-one of the frames to put the carseat into. It was a huge pain. Carrying two awkward things and a diaper bag was inconvenient. This year we have one thing to fold and a baby-no biggie. Anything this year has to be an improvement. I think he will be upset if he has to sit up all day- he likes his stretch time. It's good advice; thank you so much!

When we first started going to WDW our son who was 2 1/2 we always used the umbrella. It was small and easy to travel with, and thankfully he still fit in it. Also it was before they got the new plastic strollers, so they had those ancient metal ones that really did not look all that cozy for the kids. Hope this helps and have fun. Next trip 4/10 to 4/15.. NOT SOON ENOUGH!!!!!:sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:
PS: to carry things too big for the stroller, try a back pack, have had one for every trip we've taken, or both you and your spouse can split up what you carry between you in 2 of them.

I think you'll be happy with that. I love that the Pegs lay flat... our girly was able to have tummy time in her stroller and LOVED it. we'd be walking along and she was just as happy as could be in her stroller! I felt so bad for other tiny people sitting in umbrella strollers at that age... unless you're only going for an hour or so, that's just unkind to do to a baby who's used to being able to stretch out and such.

One tip: Some of the Peg's don't come with a snack tray... be sure to get this as some restaurants don't have highchairs, or they may not have enough.. the snack tray saved us more than once where she was able to sit up and eat finger foods right in her stroller when we couldn't locate a high chair. :)

Thanks jesserin-my Peg didn't come with a tray. It seems kind of odd since we paid a lot for that stroller! That was one of my concerns-that we wouldn't be able to get a highchair. He will be able to eat his solids sitting in the stroller, though.

I'm in WDW right now, with our 7 month old. We have the 'big' stroller and while it is challenging to move around here and there, it's great that we did bring it. We can carry anything we want, but most importantly, our son is very comfortable. The umbroller's and the rented strollers really aren't that great for such purposes.

At least that's what I think :)

Ours didn't either... we bought one on ebay for $12 and it has a cup holder and an area for snacks. It really made a big differance.

If you want to see pics... here's my Trip Report from our trip when she was 8 months... (this made me cry when i went back and looked at it) She's soooo much bigger now!!! http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=75112 EDIT: One of the strollers wasn't ours... lol the other one further down is the Peg...

Not sure which stroller to steer you to, so I'll tell you what we did. We took a small, light stroller, but we attached an umbrella with a clip and a battery operated fan to it. The umbrella not only kept the rain off, but it acted as shade when it was nice. Hopefully this helps.

We brought our Peg Perego Pliko. It's only a little bigger than an umbrella stroller but much more comfortable for us and our son. A friend of ours didn't want to lug a stroller on the plane, so they bought a cheapie umbrella stroller at WalMart for like $12. Ended up at the chiropractor from walking around hunched over for a week.

Since we are on the subject, at what age do you stop bringing the stroller?

The previous poster brought up a point I was going to make. Most umbrella strollers are pretty short handled. Even at only 5'3" I have to bend over a bit to push it and it gets very uncomfortable. It's not something you want to be doing for an extended amount of time. We have a double stroller which makes the bus/tram even more of a pain, but I'll take that over lugging 15lbs of baby necessities through the parks on my back while being hunched over an umbrella stroller.

As for how long to take the stroller, I plan on taking ours until the kids don't fit in it any more. It's much easier to keep up with them in the crowds when they're in the stroller. :D

we are taking our travel system stroller in April. I folds up toward you and
automatically locks so we don't have to worry about that. We have a backpack diaper bag so we can put things in there that we buy or just the cameras

We went last April and our son was 2 years old. We took our large stroller. He napped in it for a couple hours each day and the storage was nice for lugging diapers, etc. However, it was very awkward using the bus system because there are times the buses are so packed full. We literally had other guests helping us hold all our stuff. It doesn't fold up with the stuff in the bottom basket, so we'd have to take it all out, fold the stroller, and hold the child. So no matter what, keep your stuff in a smaller bag inside the stroller so you can grab the bag before folding the stroller.

Next month we will definitely take our Maclaren. It folds up small like an umbrella and has somewhat a basket underneath. The handles are tall so there would be no hunching or discomfort from pushing. The seat reclines and my son naps in it just fine. If there is any way you can spring it, I'd find a Maclaren. You might check your Craigslist or ebay. Maybe you can borrow one? I can't say enough good things about that stroller. I can't wait to take it to Disney.

Hey, I forgot to say... for those of you renting strollers, they offer an infant seat that goes into the stroller. We had this on our Epcot day, even though she's 16 mos. I think she felt more comfortable at nap time. They also let you go back and exchange it for a regular stroller so maybe it'd be good for your family to do something like that.

with "infant" insert... it's like nylon covered

rented double is very spacious lol (they let you have these on party nights for the price of the regular)
