OK, folks, maybe you can help settle a small controversy for me (or not, but hey, it's all good).

Is it "Pirates of the KARE-a-BEE-un"

or

"Pirates of the ka-RIBBEY-un"?

I think it's the second, but my friends insist it's the first one. How do YOU say it? And have you ever gotten into a drunken brawl with anyone over it? Let me know.

Okay, now I say the first one... and most everyone I know in Florida says the first one. In fact I said the second one once and everyone looked at me like I was the weird one. (sorry, I needed to keep the number thing going)

According to Webster's web dictionary, both pronunciations are completely 100% correct. That being said, I have always used the first one. It may be a dialect thing, as I am from South Carolina. Perhaps they use the second pronunciation up North or out West.

Strangely, when I go on a cruise, I use the second pronunciation when talking about it. So, for me, it's #1 for the ride and #2 for the location.

When I talk about the ride I use the first one.

But when I talk about the islands (no Pirates of...) I use the second one.

Same here. I don't know why that is. It just comes out that way! :)

I think we've hit on something with the "#1 for the ride" and "#2 for the place" thing. That seems to be the general rule I've noticed.

I guess an internal demand for consistency is what causes me to use the second one for both. If you're going to use just one, I guess #2 works better; i.e., saying "Pirates of the ka-RIBBEY-un" is more acceptable than taking a KARE-a-BEE-un cruise.

And whoever said it could be a regional thing is probably right, too, although I'm from about as far south as you can go (in the States, anyway), so I guess I'm the exception.

Just reading all this shows me how totally I am about this whole thing.:hammer: Ah well, that's a former English major for you.

I use and learned the second one in English, so that´s the one that sounds better to me. :animwink:

---off topic--

North, you are in Anchorage! Cool! I just saw "Insomnia" this past weekend and liked what they show of it. Very weird to have daylight all day, but still very impressive scenary! :animwink:
