Pirates of the Scareibbean

A month or so ago Miceage made mention of a big rehab coming to Pirates at Disneyland. The rehab was originally scheduled for 8 weeks this Fall, but is now pushed back to January and scheduled for 16 weeks, opening May of '06.

I'm not sure they would want to spend the money on this for WDW though. The tourists are already coming to WDW anyway, and there aren't enough locals in central Florida to sway attendance much. And then of course there's the fact that WDW's Pirates is kind of..... um...... sad and short compared to Disneyland's.

But the jist of the Miceage article about Pirates was that May, 2006 is when Disneyland will debut the new drop sequence for Tower of Terror, the new rock n' roll night version of Space Mountain, and now they also want to open a redone Pirates of the Caribbean to tie in to the other big redone rides. It would all be part of the last final push of the 50th celebration for Disneyland, in an attempt to get the locals to come back to Disneyland for one last 50th hurrah.

I think these types of major remakes of attractions work well for Disneyland because of the 25 Million locals that live within 2 freeway hours of Disneyland. Haunted Mansion Holiday, Small World Holiday and the Christmas fireworks shows proved overlays and seasonal remakes can be extremelly popular, especially with locals. This all sounds like a reasonable extension of that basic concept, and the Pirates of the Scaribbean is the most promising (With Rock It Mountain coming in second, and Tower's new drop sequence a distant third).

This all makes sense for SoCal and the demographics at Disneyland, but I don't think the business models in WDW support this type of expenditure for an older ride.

is this the same thing that jim hill wrote about a long time ago, i thought he said something about the ride switching to the storage track so that way they could add their own things w/o bothering the original

That is my impression, but I could be wrong.

I must say, it sounds very interesting. I don't like the idea of it being perminent, but I do think it would be cool if it turned into Scarribean at night. Like how the moonlight shows the pirates for who they really are.
