Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Box Office Talk

The official numbers for Pirates opening weekend was slightly better than estimated.

Officially, POTC: DMC made an astounding 135.6 million in its opening weekend.

Actuals showed that DMC did in fact cross the 100 million mark on Saturday, making it the fastest film to reach 100 million. It was reported as that yesterday but apparently there was some confusion if it really crossed that mark on Sat. or not.

As NemoRocks listed above, POTC: DMC now holds the record for best opening weekend, best opening day, biggest single day gross and fastest to 100million. Disney should be very proud.

Cinemascore's exit surveys show the film received an A- from moviegoers and Disney's own exit surveys showed 92% of those who saw the film rated it either "excellent" or "very good", which could bode well for decent legs.

As of right now POTC: DMC is at $132 Million total US gross for opening weekend, according to movieweb.com.

You might not have seen my post right above yours, but POTC: DMC officially made 135.6 million, which is 3.6 million MORE than Disney estimated yesterday with the 132 number that is in all the papers today.

In other words, it performed stronger on Sunday than they expected.

Another record broken...

Pirates made an amazing 18.1 million on its first Monday for a grand total of 153 million in just 4 days. Though it probably won't be in any record books, that number does give Pirates the highest non-holiday Monday in history.

For the records, it is the 4th biggest Monday gross in history behind only Spiderman 2 whose Monday fell around the 4th of July holiday and Shrek2 and Xmen3 which fell on Memorial day.

Depending on how it continues to hold over the week, it has the possibility of becoming the fastest film to 200 in just 7 days, but likely will at least tie the record of 8 days set by Spiderman 2. It will likely have biggest opening week though, surpassing Spiderman 2's $192 million.

The Omen's Tuesday record will definitely go down tomorrow, unfortunately Wednesday and Thursday records won't....opening week is looking to be beaten too. It should have a very, very good drop this weekend.

$15.6 million yesterday. It's a bit of a heavy drop, and it probably will make it to $200m in 8 days instead of 7 (which would've been the record), but it's still a great number.

Its still possible, but if it falls short (which it probably will) it will be very close to that mark and likewise could be seen as the fastest film to 200. (For comparison, Spiderman 2 which holds the record of 8 days was 8 million shy of 200 on day 7. POTC DMC will likely be within closer range of that 200 mark by its 7th day).

Either way, that Tuesday number is great. The percent drop is meaningless imo because of the huge numbers its generating. It seems improbable/impossible for it to continue to sustain 16-17+ days for the rest of the week given its huge opening weekend to begin with. Tuesday's take ranks as the biggest Tuesday in history for any movie beating The Omen which set the record last month with 12.6 million, which it got only because it opened on a Tuesday to coincide with the date of 6-6-06.

It also only needs a little more than 22 million over the next 2 days to surpass the record of biggest opening week, a record it appears it should break despite any help from a holiday week/weekend.

Superman Returns is fantastic and so is everything else in the top 5, except Prada which I haven't seen. 4 best films of the year so far, IMO, on that list.

Hmm... Pirates and Thank You for Smoking are my top two films thus far.

$14,230,000 yesterday. That's a very solid drop from Tuesday. It'll manage at least $65 million over the weekend I'd say, probably even $70 million.

Current total is $183,620,554. At the same point in time, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith had $191.3m (although it did open on a Thursday), Spider-Man 2 had $202.1m (opened on a Wednesday), Shrek 2 had $148.5m (another Wednesday opener), Spider-Man had $144.1m, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl had only $92.5m (which also opened on a Wednesday).

The actual for Wednesday was 14.154 million. This gives Pirates two more records. It has the highest total (183.6) of any film after 6 days of release and likewise will hold the biggest opening week after today. It also now holds the record for biggest non-opening Wednesday.

$12,085,000 for Thursday. That would be the opening week record and it ties with Spider-Man 2 and Revenge of the Sith for the fastest to $200m record (8 days). The 8-day ($202.1m), 9-day ($215.9m), and 10-day ($236.7m) records are going to be gone by the end of the weekend as well.

2 weekend estimate: $62.1 million for a grand total of $258.2 after only 10 days.

A very good and respectable drop (54.2% compared to last weekend) considering it just came off a record breaking opening weekend and opening week.

It is the 3rd biggest second weekend. Why not the first considering the records it's broken up to now? Shrek 2 holds the record at 72 million, but its second weekend fell on Memorial day holiday. As with Shrek 2 as well, the second biggest opening weekend, which is held by Spiderman 1, were for films that opened while school was in session, thus its box office relied more heavily on weekend crowds vs spreading it out between weekdays and weekends as with summer movies/Pirates.

Pirates broke several records this weekend, including the following:

1. Fastest to 200 in 8 days (though it was a tie with Spiderman 2 and Star Wars Episode III, its total on its 8th day was higher than either of these films, so it claims the crown)
2. Biggest film of 2006 to date surpassing X-Men 3's $231 million
3. Biggest 8 day, 9 day and 10 day total grosses.

The next big record to break is fastest to 300 million which stands at 17 days. Depending on the strength of its weekdays, it should cross 300 on either its 15th or 16th day of release.

$3,300,000 yesterday pushes it to $371,998,000 and the #10 spot on the all-time domestic chart. :) It will surpass Spider-Man 2 and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King over the weekend with a good chance of getting past Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith as well(depending on today's increase) to push it up to #7. Next up is Spider-Man which is #6 with $403,706,375.

They're releasing the numbers for this weekend today, and hopefully Pirates made it to the $400 million mark. If they did, then they will be the 7th movie ever in the United States to pass $400 million.

Great news for POTC: DMC. It now ranks as only 1 of 5 films to ever cross the 400 million mark domestically in its first run (unadjusted) and the 7th film ever to cross that mark.

It will outgross Spiderman's 403.7 sometime next weekend to become the 6th biggest domestic film of all time.

Its next big milestone to try and cross...$1 billion worldwide.
