Pirates Of The Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides thread

I liked the last 2 sequels even though they had their problems. Although I'm disapointed the critic reaction isn't looking so good for this one so far. :(

Oh well, I'm still going to watch it and decide for my self this afternoon.
Critics are bitter people who hate pretty much every movie that comes out. I've found that when they hate a movie, I love it, and vice versa.

I saw it last night and loved it, although I loved all 3 movies. Like a lot of people, I'd probably put it under 1 but above 2 and 3...nothing can beat that first movie. The story was a lot easier to follow, Jack was hilarious as usual, and mermaids are creepy. The only thing I didn't like is that I really missed Will and Elizabeth.

Oh! And I loved that they added another ride scene in the movie :D Did anyone else catch it?

edit: I remembered something I didn't like...the music. I'm a huge fan of the music from all 3 films. But this movie re-used a lot of the music from 3. I wish they used more original stuff for the movie.

At the movies with Captain Jack

We had a really good time last night at the midnight premiere. (Check out our video...yes, that is Captian Jack who joined us to watch the film).

In a nutshell, I really enjoyed the film. Like others have said, it doesn't beat the original, but still one I will go back to again before it leaves the big screen. I don't have time right now to post an in-depth review, but will do that as a blog later on. Definitely worth the wait, and certainly glad the pirates have returned! Now...bring on that horizon...and Pirates 5!!!

Per Boxofficemojo....

While it's just now setting sail domestically, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides kicked off its foreign run on Wednesday. The movie earned $18.5 million from 10 markets on its first day, then added $25.7 million from 37 territories on Thursday. According to distributor Walt Disney Pictures, its $44.2 million two-day haul was up 10 percent from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. That movie went on to have one of the highest-grossing overseas debuts ever with $216 million on its way to a massive $654 million total.

With $10.3 million in the bank already, Russia is Pirates's biggest territory so far. Its $5 million opening day tally beat The Twilight Saga: Eclipse to set a new opening day record there. It's also set to pass At World's End's $14 million opening weekend figure today, and it could ultimately make a run at topping Avatar's $19.7 million to become the top-grossing debut in Russian history.

On Stranger Tides also opened higher than its predecessor on Wednesday in the United Kingdom ($3.2 million), France ($3.1 million), Italy ($1.7 million) and Sweden ($1.3 million). Thursday opening day results are not yet available for Germany and South Korea.

On Stranger Tides is set to open in Japan, China, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, India and many more as part of its worldwide expansion today.

Looks like this may break some overseas records. Awesome news, if this thing approaches the 1 billion mark then Disney will have no choice but to make Pirates 5. I hope they grab a new director though, get another fresh take.

Saw it this morning. It tended to be slower paced in the beginning but that may have been out of necessity to develop new characters. All in all it was good, music was great, and it left plenty of opportunity for another.

Yeah. Critics were pretty harsh against #2 and #3 also. :( I still enjoyed those two though. I doubt any will be better than the original, but still a lot of fun though.

This is not a critics movie, they hate this kind of film so I wont listen to them. We also liked 2 and 3 (despite the reviews) and I think there is a good chance we will like this one as well. We are going to the early Sunday show and I cant wait!:sohappy:

Hubby and I are planning on seeing it Sunday and I can't wait. Very excited for the mermaid scenes. They look very interesting.

Maybe I'm the only one, but my taste in movies is usually in line with what the critics think, not that they always agree with each other.
Walter Chaw, Sean Burns, and Eric Snider are all critics I can depend on to predict whether a movie is worth my time.

Pirates 4 is at 35% and falling on Rotten Tomatoes. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/pirates_of_the_caribbean_on_stranger_tides/
I'd rather catch a skin disease than watch Pirates 2 or 3 again, so I'll be skipping this one too.

Ah, now I know why y'all didn't get it! Thanks. I only know DL's Pirates, we don't go on it at WDW.

I enjoy WDW's, but only because i once thought it was the same as all the others. Little did i know that it's only about half the ride Disneyland's is. I was lucky enough to experience Paris' when i was little, amazing experience. WDW's is still a solid ride, but it's pretty sad when compared to the originals.

Saw the movie on Friday -- all I can say is, it's shorter than any of the others (thankfully) and it's basically the same as the 2nd, not as good as the 1st, and way better than the interminable 3rd...

WOuldn't be anything I would see a second time. But I didn't hate it.

I've been misled so many times by the Rotten Tomatoes website it isn't even funny. Movies I love end up getting the shaft, while movies that were less impressive were getting praised. I finally turned my Give-a-damn switch to the "Off" position when it comes to what that site says. Not saying it's always 100% off from my tastes, but more than not.

I liked it, but not as much as some of the others. It had a lot of the fun, action, and supernatural elements that are now the signatures of the series, but I felt like it was missing some of the smarts. There were a lot of elements that didn't make sense to me, didn't seem to fit in the film, or were missing explanation.

THAR SPOILERS BE AHEAD!!

Like Blackbeard - he's set up to have all these magic powers, but the movie neither does anything significant with them nor explain where they came from. It's like the screenwriters just threw them into the movie to make his character more interesting. And the Spanish destroying the fountain also seemed like a very strange plot development to me - wasn't it the Spanish who desperately wanted to find it in the first place? (both historically and in the context of the film). And like MasterYoda said, the clergy character seemed pointless and hard to like as a character. Pretty much a more bible-thumping Will Turner, but without any of the other reasons to like him. But I actually thought one of the biggest disappointments was the score - pretty much every musical theme was recycled from a previous film, while some had the occasional Spanish guitar added.

That said, Penelope Cruz was a very nice replacement for Will/Elizabeth (who while I liked, I didn't really miss), and added some fresh backstory and some potential for a new direction in the series. And all the Hawaiian landscapes created a very nice new backdrop for the movie, after having seen so much of the Caribbean now. The mermaids provided a nice mythological bent to the movie, and seemed nicely in tune with the other mythical elements of the series. One of my favorite things about the Pirates series is how they integrate elements from real pirate history and nautical tales (The Flying Dutchman, the black spot, the kraken, etc.), and adding mermaids and Juan Ponce de Leon seemed to do that very nicely for this film.

SPOILERS BE GONE!

So generally, I liked it, even it didn't match the brilliance of the first movie or the grandeur of the second and third. I might rank them as 1 / 2 / 4 / 3. (And I really liked the first three!)

And yes, I did capture the ride reference. :D

It was good. I'm not a huge fan of the franchise, but i liked this movie. The new love plot lines were much better than the stale Will/Elizabeth ones in my opinion. And the action sequences weren't 30 minutes long and tiresome like in some of the past movies.

We saw it this morning and I have to say we really enjoyed it. The only thing that I will agree with the critics on is that the first movie was better. I cant see how if you are a fan of the series you wont like this movie. The biggest fear I had was that this would be a total money grab for Disney. I dont think it was at all, I give it a solid B.

I've seen it twice already and I think it's an amazing addition to the franchise. While I actually prefer the overly complex criscrossed plot of At Worlds End over the almost overly simplified plot of Stranger Tides, I still found the movie to be a fantastic experience.

Also, I need to take this opportunity to take a few shots at the critics...who are often wrong, but never more so than right now with this movie:

Roger Ebert is an idiot....

Very interesting you say that, because as much as people love to echo the "black pearl was the best" sentiment... that clearly wasn't reflected in the box office numbers. Curse of the Black Pearl is the lowest grossing movie of the three. Black Pearl took in approx 650M worldwide. Dead Mans Chest took in about 1B worldwide and At Worlds End took in 950M worldwide.

Given the above article, it looks like Black Pearl will remain the lowest.... assuming the momentum for Stranger Tides continues...
