Joe, I'm glad it worked for you. But after being a PT for 12 years, I've heard more stories of people being hurt by chiropractors than being helped by them.

Also, if you have had to go for years, how is it helping you? I would think if you were better, you wouldn't have to keep going back. :animwink:

As the daughter in law of a chiropractor (and, the wife of a DO :lookaroun), I must jump in and say that we shouldn't make blanket statements. :p

He has saved me through all my pregnancies. Manipulation therapy DOES work. *edit I will add that I believe the difference between a good chiropractor and a bad one is that they should know there are limits, and when that limit is reached. My FIL is not hesitant at all to send patients on if he sees they are not making progress. He has enough patient load and doesn't need the extra bodies in the waiting room.

And for the love of Pete if you ever get one who says they will cure your cancer or AIDS, run, run for your liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiife!

Actually, I was very careful to NOT make a blanket statement. Dukeblue made one saying "chiropractors are miracle workers!" and I was simply refuting that statement, using my clinical experience.

I'm going the orthopedic physician route. My appointmet is Tuesday. I know this doc through work. He'll most likely recommend PT. I feel much more confident with this option--PLUS insurance covers it!

Yes you are right.

It just gets aggrivating when the "less than traditional" forms of medicine are just dismissed.

I know what you mean there. I am very big about preventing and fixing problems through good sound nutrition thereby giving your body what it needs to fix itself. Most doctors just turn there nose up at the notion and hand out that prescription that just turns off a symptom.

Funny you posted this thread as I have had a flare up of problems in my neck lately.
I had severe whiplash in car wreck when I was a teenager, ever since I have had problems with my neck, back and headaches. I also have no curve at all in my neck it is as straight as a board so my muscles have to overwork to compensate.
I have done the whole thing with pysical therapy and a chiropractor. Both did help somewhat. My main problem is I have trigger points/knots that come up and will not release. I have had series of trigger point injections that help but leave the muscles so sore and the injections themselves are very painful.

Try ice therapy on the knots if you can feel them in your neck (heat makes mine worse) Biofreeze is the best rub that I have ever used, you can get it at the Physical therapist or maybe the Chiropractor.
Another option since you have insurance is a TENS unit. (it sends little shocks to the muslce to confuse the pain signal to the brain) I have one and it works really well. Your insurance will pay for it if your doctor prescribes it.

I feel for you,:( I know how bad it can hurt. Good luck!

*Oh and get a really good pillow to support your neck if you don't have one because that can make it even worse.*

Try reading this book Healing Back Pain or The Mind Body Connection by Dr. John Sarno, MD. It presents the idea that a lot of neck and back pain is due to stress. It worked for me.

If you're going to see any doctor about your neck, go to a neurologist instead of a orthopedist.
