Picking ADRs for 2...

So I am planning a surprise 2017 trip, and I have decided to tell my wife on Christmas 2016 that we are going in June 2017. Well...180 days before our trip will be before Christmas, so I am going to want to have the ADR already selected....what tips do you have for those, as I want to pick something new, but don't want to pick something that she will not like (though if there is steak, she will eat it). Do I take a risk or just go with basic meals? I know the 'Must Dos' for the trip, and there are a few that I want to do (California Grill for example).

I don't know, maybe I'm looking into it too much right now...but then again, I am a major planner and like to plan as early as I can.

I'm planning on doing Victoria and Alberts, but will use that as a pay out of pocket, as I don't believe they accept the dining plan. Plenty of time to save for that meal lol

Maybe look at it from the experience perspective and not so much just the food. You noted Cali Grill and V&A...which would be great experiences...but think about what other things she might like that goes beyond the food.

Examples...would she enjoy dining with an imagineer, would she appreciate a character meal as an adult, would she like dining with views of animals at Sanaa, would she like multiple fireworks timed meals (i.e. Narcoosee's, R&C, etc.), would she like meals with more cultural entertainment elements added (i.e. Marrakesh, Biergarten), would she appreciate a chef's table experience (while V&A is one, I think Flying Fish is one of the others that offers something like this), would she be up for a silly meal like 50s or WCC, and so on and so forth.

As a couple, we enjoyed dinner at California Grill, Flying Fish, Chefs de France, San Angel Inn, Rose & Crown, Hollywood Brown Derby,... We are now planning a little more character dinners for my son, but I have to say we already enjoyed Crystal Palace for the food and Pooh characters.

Love a little Disney every day!! ;)
You sure do! Also look at the premium and platinum dining packages, some of the
Signature Restaurants are included there.
All signatures (except V&A's) is included on all the dining plans (except quick service plan) but just take 2 credits each for each person. :)

I think it's fun to add in some of the more casual restaurants as well so it feels like you are going on a very different kind of date each night. Planning a trip for two myself, I booked California Grill one night and then Beaches and Cream the next. These two very different restaurants offer a different kind of romance. At one you get to dress up and have a fine dining experience and the other you can share a milkshake and feel like a teenager again. I also think San Angel Inn has a romantic atmosphere for two!

I agree with a past poster. Formal restaurants are really nice and I love them (very much), but sometimes those more casual restaurants are great too. The ones that have a different theme or shtick that is different from what you get at home can spark a very different fun type of romance. No matter what ADRs you choose, I hope you have a wonderful trip. What a fun surprise for your wife!

The default in MDE is two. You tend to get more choices when choosing 2 people anyway. I would pick something where the crowds aren't crazy. You want something quieter (children are likely to be in any restaurant) and more romantic.

So, you wouldn't want Biergarten, for example. But Artist Point or California Grill might be more your vibe.

Keep in mind that new restaurants may open between now and summer 2017 and current favorites may close. Menus also change frequently at many restaurants so just keep checking for things you both will like. What a nice surprise this will be for her!
