While I completely agree that the GCH could benefit from an overhaul, it saddens me that the center water and garden feature may disappear. That is classic WDW/Poly 1971, and is such a central component of the lobby and the Poly's identity.

There are 40 years worth of lots of people's memories of the Poly tied to the volcano/waterfall/flowers and birds (remember those?) of that lobby and it would be a shame to see it go.
No! No! No! Then... Disney will have to build something similar and better!

Maybe they needed to get all the money out of the water feature to pay for the renovations ;)

The birds are over at Animal Kingdom. They had to remove them because people were throwing stuff at them from the second floor.

we humans are capable of some pretty garbage behavior.

love the center water feature at the poly, so i'd be sad to see it go.

Crush Dude!

Back from WDW!Counting down to DLP in November!
Tonga rooms were redone last year. I was in the building days after they finished and have been putting photos on my site of the new room design in Tonga. The new rooms for the rest of the resort will look similar and they are planning to start putting them into longhouses the end of this year. Hawaii (club level) is already blocked out for January to the first few days of March for the new room design to go into that building.

Tonga was not in the plans to get taken down but some stuff at the Polynesian will, including Luau Cove. The lounge for Tonga was to be redesigned when the new rooms were put in. I did not hear why it was not but I believe it is still in the plans at some point.

The GCH will not be torn down as they speculated would happen last year but they will gut it and do it in phases to keep it open for access to the monorail platform. The center water feature looks like it will be a casualty of the new design. DVC will be going in more of the resort than just where the sight balloons were seen.

The reason I was told that they believe the DVC will be the most expensive at the Polynesian is because it will open after the GF and I guess they believe that prices will go up. Also they have a unique plan for some of the DVC rooms never seen at Disney and because of this they will demand a high price but even Disney folks Im sure are speculating until the actual prices come out.
Some of the rooms will be much more unique than anything at the GF or BLT and as far as BLT being more convenient that maybe the case for access to the MK but not for Epcot. The Polynesian really has any other resort beat for overall transportation but that is a whole other discussion. Also the Polynesian since it has opened (with the Contemporary being the original flag ship resort) was always more popular (based on Disney numbers) and had been the test bed for just about everything from new technology to being the first concierge (club level) and still has the most repeat guests out of any Disney resort. Whit that said there are so many great things about each resort and I love to visit the Contemporary every time I am there. I will be staying at the Contemporary for the first time this September and I am looking forward to it.

By the way, I get my info from those who know what is happening and not just from the bus driver or the valet but even then we all know Disney can change plans last minute and change dates even up to the day something is planned to happen. This is what I know of the plan right now....well as much as I can share.

Great info yet again man ;)

I'm glad the GCH won't be bulldozed to build a tower, but I love the little rainforest. It gives an authentic feeling to the lobby. I'm curious what the new design looks like if it requires it's removal.

Come on Steve, as the Tikiman himself, you're not even a little bit saddened by the potential removal of the water feature? Any insight as to what the new plans would call for instead?

Well a few things that are in the plans make me a little worried that the Polynesian will lose the feel we have come to know and love. Yes I am sad to see the water feature go but since I can't do anything about it (except strap myself to it so they don't take it out) I can see how it is a lot of square footage that could be better used and with what they did in the Aulani lobby I am excited to see what they have planned. I heard somethign about some sort of water feature or stream or something but I don't have any clear details on what will go in its place. I can tell you my biggest worry is with all that they will add, we will lose that quiet little Polynesian hideaway that it once was. I guess it won't matter much to me once it gets so expensive I won't be able to stay there anymore....who am I kidding....it will still bother me.

Please take pictures when you strap yourself to the water feature. I would love to see this!

You're right....the balloons were orange and yellow. :p

haha, his theory makes sense if the balloon stays at a fixed point in space, but balloons on strings are infamous for not wanting to stay at fixed points in space

Aside from that though, all the other DVCs match the height and architecture of the of the hotels they're added on to, "Beach Club Villas", "Animal Kingdom Villas", "Wilderness Lodge"... the reason "Bay Lake Tower" is a tower, is because "The Contemporary" is a tower, and the concept art for the "Grand Floridian" DVC matches the height and look of the rest of GF. So I don't see why they would something drastically different at the Poly

Will the Poly be a big construction site by late May/early June 2013? We had planned on staying there for the first time.
Looks like the last longhouse will be scheduled to be done sometime in June. I don't have any schedule on any of the other things that might be happening so I can't really answer that completely.

The DVC at the Polynesian will not match the height of the existing longhouses.
