Wouldn't it be sweet though if they rethemed the speedway to the Tron films with the option of riding in Light Cycles or Light Runners? Imagine the lighting at night and if they added mufflers and piped in sound effects to the cars? That would be great in my opinion!

I'm not into Tron at all (however I haven't seen the new movie yet) but that sounds kind of cool. I like anything with special lighting and I can just imagine how this would look at night!

I'll agree that the Speedway isn't certainly the best attraction the MK has to offer but if you have kids you do "get it" a little. My two get such a kick out of this ride b/c they can "drive"! If the ride has to stay, I say a retheme is the only way to go... and give us something to look at while we're cruising, please!

Autopia is in Tomorrowland in Disneyland because when it was built, in 1955, the United States did not have the interstate system that we know today. At that time the idea of driving on a multi-lane highway was actually quite futuristic, hence why Autopia is in Tomorrowland.

In the last 56 years, the idea of driving on a multi-lane interstate highway has become mundane, but in the 50s it was an incredible vision of the future...a vision that happened to come true.

That said, TLS at the Magic Kingdom is quite non-Tomorrow theamed...but in no way does it need a retheming into a "Cars" attraction. I like the idea of a Tron theme, or something else futuristic.

Thanks for filling me in!

Always glad to share little bits of knowledge! I thought it was cool when I learned about it. I had been asking the exact same question you had about how cars fit in Tomorrowland. It's pretty cool to think about the interstate system, the system that most of us use to travel our great country, as being futuristic. It certainly isn't today...but it was in 1955.
