PHOTOS - Disney reveals new lobby design and Trader Sam's lounge for the Polynesian

Without even mentioning the problems they've had with the waterfall, one of the biggest complaints about the Poly has been about its 'dated' lobby and how it needed to be modernized. And now that they give a rendering of a more modern, open design people dislike it.

As Tikiman can tell you, and as I know from visits starting in the 1970's, the Poly lobby and entrance have changed several times over the years. This is just another change but boy people hate change. Me, in this case I like the change to something more open and glad they are doing something about the water feature that had had so many problems and already been cut back.
I don't want to speak for others on here, but for me I really like to see them updating things like they're doing with the decor of the lobby. But not doing anything to at least replace that feature with something more than just a little fountain would've been nice. It's still going to be a nice hotel and probably look great, but it's just a shame to lose some of the unique character of that hotel.

It does sound like maybe they had problems with that original waterfall, but to just take out anything like it is disappointing.

I see that they are doing that on the Disney Blog but it also makes a difference in how you phrase the comments. I'd also keep it short and to the point and not in an 'angry tone'. Just some suggestions.

I love that change for the Polynesian and I love it! I really wanted to stay in the Polynesian village Resort if the rates to be lowered.

The rates will NEVER be lowered....and they will continue to rip the exotic heart out of the hotel. Much like the Princess Hug Zone in Fantasyland, it is too contract looking...Not special. They need to rethink the approach and add some wow factor back in...

I have to ask, who are these people complaining? First time visitors? Honey Boo Boo's? I can't imagine a true Disney fan asking for a change such as this. Updating the waterfall/fountain to have a better system that's less problematic would have been the way to go. Not rip it out.

Regardless of whose complaining, I think the reactions we have seen on this board and DPB and other websites prove that these people are a small minority.

They're trying for more of an Aulani look, But the problem is it's still the little 'ole Poly lobby (That's not a bad thing, but you cannot turn one into the other) With such a small centerpiece in the lobby, they need an upward draw to the view, as attempted by hanging glass(?) globes. It just doesn't work like Aulani's spectacular roof line does. Also note, Aulani has a water feature off to the side. I see no mention of one here. The 'birdbath' as others have called it seems to be all they are planning.

I'm trying to keep in mind that drawn renditions are pale in comparison to the actual look and feel to the design. I will miss that waterfall immensely - it brings back happy memories of my Nana and I shopping there. She adored it, and it's the first time I felt we ever really connected.

It was the same people who complained about prime rib on the buffets

The blog seems permanently broken, at least for me - you can't post any comments without an error and there haven't been new ones for the better part of an hour now. Capped at 48.

I also heard they will be closing in part of the atrium towards the back of the lobby flooring over about 15 feet of the open space or more to add more waiting space for O'hana.....So you may think it may seem more open when in fact it will be more closed in...

I won't lie this whole renovation is one big bummer. :( Just when I think it can't get any worse. The news about Trader Sam's is depressing.

Tikiman please reassure us all these changes aren't as bad as we think think they are.:arghh:

I am keeping my opinion to myself for now but I have higher hopes for the changes coming to the pool area and a few other things not mentioned yet.

Does it really matter?

Can people who've only been there once complain along side those who have made the Polynesian their destination resort for 20 years? The fact that everyone (ok, almost) is lamenting the loss of the water feature should be enough to open Disney's eyes.

No surprise there. I'm sure the #DSMM are uniting to form like Voltron and save the day!

7DMT is a good example. It's a nice coaster, but let the imagineers of the 70's build that coaster. They would have made it ten times more magical and they didn't need super computers and 100 million dollars and it would have been built in half the time.

...or they might have cloned an existing Disneyland dark ride based around Arrow Development's copy of an off-the-shelf Pretzel ride vehicle.

Oh wait, that's exactly what they did.

Trader Sam's, however it comes out, will be an improvement over what it replaces (nothing). So I'm upbeat about that.

Return of the old name -- I like.

New lobby...ugh. I usually like the aesthetic changes Disney makes to update things -- I don't really feel pangs of nostalgia for the way things used to be. And the poly has not been a frequent resort stay for me, as I prefer other resorts for the cost. So I have no particular reasons to dislike these planned changes, except that the concept art looks like the new lobby will be much less interesting than the old. Sure, there's more open space, but at the cost of anything that would actually cause you to want to be in that space.
