News PHOTOS - Cinderella Castle at the Magic Kingdom to receive enhancements this summer

For what it's worth regarding time of construction, I read in other forums that this weekend includes the Princess half marathon on Sunday 2/23 that takes place of course in Magic Kingdom and includes going through the castle. This event is a huge opportunity for professional photos so it makes sense there won't be any scaffolding or scrim being put up until after that is done.... I would think!

EDIT: I asked via DM on The WDWGuestServices Twitter about any dates when this work will start and also if this will effect the Princess marathon this weekend. This is the response I just got:
"Unfortunately, we do not have specific dates to share at this time. I can assure you, however, that this work will not affect the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend."

I agree. Stone is never painted on castles. Machicolations are always made of stone and wouldn't take paint or gold foil very well. I'm also the guy wondering how Elsa's survived in her ice castle without food and her butt not sticking to the toilet seat.

Perhaps the conceit will be that the machicolations are made of gold. Let’s consider that this is the castle where the owner’s claim to fame is wearing/finding a glass slipper. I don’t think Fairy Godmother cares much for our earthly problems of structural integrity. She also made a coach out of a pumpkin. Transfiguring stone into gold would not be so hard.

I don’t know how HEA will work with scrims (Mix Magic did not have projections when Sleeping Beauty Castle was under a tarp.) It sounds like they are going to attempt painting it without them using a movable equipment (cranes.)

I expect painting to finish up just prior to the first MNSSHP, DL’s castle refurb took 5 months (Mid January-Late June) I think it’s probably going to take as long here.

Mix Magic did have projections while Sleeping Beauty had tarps on. HEA will also work regardless...as for the projections. The question is when they’re going to turn off the on-castle launched pyro.

Perhaps not when you were there, but they did project onto the scrims at some point

Wow, never saw that in February, however if you watch the show and compare it to no scrims it’s very obvious the projection on the scrim is simply ported from Main Street and designed for a flat surface instead of the real castle video which highlights features of the castle.

HEA does not have the luxury of such a projection, the current projection would be very blurry and not sized correctly if simply projected on a flat surface. They’ll need to create a new video if scrims go up.

Your mind is painting out the slight pastel pinks on the upper walls since that can easily be a result of ambient lighting, and our brain tends to autocorrect the colors we see adjusting for ambient light.

Going by the concept art, there *might* be a pastel wash of pink/rose on the upper walls. Or, it's just the artist turning up the reds to help highlight the gold.

Just in case there is still any question about whether there is pink, Good Morning America posted a more detailed description of the changes, including:

“The castle spires' shingles appear to have a deeper, richer hue of blue. Behind the fortified outer curtain of the castle, a soft rose-pink contours the main structure or what's known as an inner curtain.”

"...appear to have..." So... the author doesn't really know. They're just commenting on the same artist's concept we're all looking at.

This isn't a source.

And again, it *could* be a rose wash. Or it could be a color adjustment by the artist that doesn't reflect the actual hue of the walls. The original picture that was 'shopped didn't have the true 'daylight' color of the walls.

And getting back to the prediction of "rose gold"... if those walls did have a soft rose-pink wash... that is *not* what "rose gold" is. At all. Big difference between "rose and gold" and "rose gold."

Any news on merchandise or if Disney will release a model of the revamped castle as a monorail toy or 50th version like they did for DL? Would be cool to have.

Yeah I agree with HEA's projection is actual mapping very specific locations, not just projecting a movie onto a blank screen. I can't see them doing the projections they have now on a square box scrim. In other forums, I've seen the following reports people have heard from Disney Guest Services:

wgxOrK2.jpg

And this report I'll just quote: "Just on the phone checking other details with Guest Services and I asked what the impact of this was likely to be and I was told - the renovations will be happening in stages, so there is a possibility for some scaffolding etc. at the time of my visit (end April) however they said it will not be the entire castle at any one time, fireworks dessert parties, BBB and CRT etc. are unaffected. They are starting by pressure washing the moat."

After hearing all these reports, my gut is telling me they might not cover anything during the work being done and actually leave it open during the day (which I believe they did when painting it pink in 1996 prior to all the cake stuff being attached?). The stage shows with the projection mapping and launched pryo directly from the castle are too involved to fully modify by putting huge scrims and scaffolding up everywhere IMO. I really hope they just leave it open during the progress. I feel people would much rather the normal looking castle with some in progress painting going on than a horrible scrimmed up box when they turn the corner onto Main Street.

That is someone's take on seeing the artist's concept. That's why they said "appear to have...".

Yes, the walls can wind up with a rose wash. But the photo that was 'shopped started out with a yellowish hue to the walls because of natural light. So, there may not be a rose wash in the end.

Nothing has been confirmed by official Disney.
