News PhotoPass at some character locations being replaced by automated cameras

I noticed during our most recent trip (the week before Thanksgiving) that there were not many PhotoPass photographers at all. It was our 12 month old daughters first trip so we heavily weighed the option of buying the PhotoPass option.

Thank god we didn’t buy it because we got pictures from a few meet and greets and a few rides but that’s it. It seems that on previous trips within the last few years, we were tripping over photographers. It seemed like we were constantly scanning our magic band to them. But not this time...a few on Main Street of course, but hardly anywhere else.

PhotoPass photographers were still doing Rapunzel lantern photo at the After Hours event in a near-empty park at 1 AM.

As for jobs...

How is that any different than if the photopass photographer drops your phone?
I could just see this scenario happening where people would say they felt they had to use their phone for a picture since Photopass at a particular location was so mediocre. Then said person’s phone gets busted.

Easy to mount a little shelf on the box, that you sit your phone on.
Then have your Iphone set to take a photo when it detects the smiles.
Hey, is that how the new automated PhotoPass is supposed to work? By detecting emotion and taking photos at the right time? Or are they eventually going to shoot multiple 4K video streams for you to pull stills off of after the fact? The latter might be something I'd pay for.

This would be worth it, because the majority of pictures I get from the Memory Maker are not even in good focus. So at least that way you've got a higher chance of being in focus. But currently it's not worth a fraction of what they're charging for some out of focus shots by their human or robotic photogs.

As (I believe) has been said before, and should be reiterated: This will not simply be a photobox with a preset angle that takes photos at random intervals. This is field testing of one of the (IMO) more interesting Disney Research projects that should utilize a variety of angles and technology. The purpose of this is not to skimp out of Photopass (for now), but instead to see if this is viable technology for photography in an intimate setting.

Since you're new here: @Magic Feather is one of a few highly reliable group of insiders who frequent these boards. The info he writes here is usually more accurate than not, as he has sources from within the Disney company.

I'm not trying to claim anyone is more right or wrong, but to give @SirWillow some credibility, if this is they same SirWillow from YouTube (which I assume he is based on the profile pic) he was a Disney Photopass Photographer for several years and may have connections with people in that group (he has a really fun YouTube page where he talks about his time as a photographer). Again, that's not to say others may not have more accurate info (especially on future plans). There may certainly be a difference in what is there now and what will ultimately be rolled out (possibly using a simpler version initially as a proof of concept?)

That's one of the quirks about Tokyo that I love... they actually have little stands you can set your phone on all around the park to take pics of yourself in front of a variety of really nice backgrounds!

Any updates on this? Has anyone had any experience with this new system?
Just curious if they went ahead with this and what locations are now using this.
We have a trip coming up this March and as of now have decided NOT to purchase Memory Maker but are wondering what people who have actually been exposed (;)) to this think about it.

Obviously not. Everyone canceled their vacations over this and the parks are empty except for Brazilian Tour Groups®.

did a bit of checking and they apparently haven't rolled out the cameras yet, but may be next month. Looks like Tink might be the first in January. The couple I heard from hadn't heard of the multi position cameras but only were aware of the one fixed location, one angle camera.

So looks like we'll actually be waiting until sometime next month perhaps to actually see what they roll out.

Thanks. We will wait until the last minute IF we purchase Memory Maker. If they roll this out before our March anniversary trip we probably won't waste our money on it this trip.

Wouldn’t be shocked if I am wrong, although I do know of testing with multi-angle cameras. Not sure if this is the final application for that, or if it is just one of the many pie in the Sky Disney Research projects.
