Well, I can breathe a little easier now! As many of you now know, I've had my Disney trip on the books for Sept 14-21 since February. My 180 day mark inconveniently fell on March 18th, which was the first day of a 2 week trial I had been preparing for for months. So up I was at 6 am trying to get these reservations made online and then over the phone because I knew if I waited until the end of the day that there was a good possibility some of my ideal time slots would be gone.

So, I get all of my reservations done, head to trial and day 1 goes fine. Well, we get into day 2 and the attorneys on the other side make some big mistakes and upon my request, the judge declares a mistrial (i.e., we get a mulligan).

We go back to the judge today to get a date for our new trial. Now, I had called the judge about a week ago to see what days he had open so I could make sure all of my witnesses were available. He had two and OF COURSE one of the two was September 16-27 - which would mean the Disney trip along with all of my ADRs would have to be rescheduled... and of course I had no excuse because all of my witnesses were available. (and it's not like I can tell a judge- sorry judge, can't make it. I'm in Disney).

So, I get there today and bless the Lord the other attorney can't do September 16th!! So, we got pushed back to January - which means all of my travel plans can stay intact! These last few days have been dreadful wondering if I would have to re-do everything! SO RELIEVED right now :D

Whooo hoooo! Unless you liked the make up of the jury (if you had one). In response to "it's not like I can tell a judge that you'll be at Disney." Um.., yes, yes you can! :D

I got called for jury duty about a month before my wedding (which was out of state). I was terrified I would get stuck in some long protracted case and completely screw up my wedding. Luckily they only pulled a few people for voir dire in two cases and everything else that day settled. But it caused me several sleepless nights worrying.

I'm glad it all worked out (fellow attorney). We were once on vacation in South Africa on safari on our 180 day mark with no telephone or internet access. I'm very compulsive about handling things myself, and I was freaking out about getting my ADRs, but Kingdom Konsultants rose to the challenge and got me every single one I wanted without having to resort to the extensive list of backups I had provided. They're terrific!

Funny thing about the jury - hands down the WORST jury I have EVER had - and that's not just me - that's the opinion of all of the other defense attorneys I was there with (I'm on the defense and there were 4 of us total) and the courtroom staff!! We had a felon, a guy who, when asked what he did day-to-day, described himself as a "couch flipper" (i.e., every couple hours he flips over on the couch), we had a clepto who kept stealing things from the judges office (pens, candy, notebooks, whatever he could get his hands on), we had a guy who showed up drunk both days. And it goes on. Terrible jury. In fact, it was one of the reasons I moved for a mistrial! Had I had a great jury I think I would have just kept going.

Oh! I forgot, "couch flipper" did boost his credibility minimally when he said that he also trained a squirrel.

Oh! A red letter day for you, then. Re: the felon - A felon can serve on a jury? I did not know that. Re: clepto - I bet the baliff had a great time keeping an eye on him/her. Re: the drunk - Was he/she arrested? Dude, I'm milatant about anybody who could get behind the wheel drunk (sorry. will get off the soapbox.).

Okay -
(1) The Felon - she had just been charged with felony neglect and she told us in voir dire. So, in all fairness, she was not a convicted felon - just a charged felon.
(2) The clepto - didn't even know until after the fact when the court reporter told me! I couldn't believe it!
(3) Pretty sure the drunk didn't own a car...in fact, still wondering where the drunk got the money for the booze?
