I won't pretend to have any insights into what may or may not constitute respectful representation of Native Americans in a theme park ride operated by a multinational media conglomerate, but in my estimation, as a fan of silly dark rides, this appears to be very very well done.

As others have said, WDI actually replaced the problematic scene instead of just eliminating it, and the replacement scene is kinetic and perfectly consistent with the tone of the attraction. I'm kind of stunned they didn't just run away from depicting Native Americans at all.

Now go back to the drawing board and fix the auction scene.

It's perfectly fine to sell gorgeous red heads instead of fat old women. The movie does it.

Yeah, zero problem with this. Perfectly executed, and proof that they can get it right when they don't let Twitter dictate how to address these things.

Do I have a problem with the end result here? Not really, Its a tiny scene that you fly past in a second. Certainly isn't like removing the ROA. I have more of an issue with the type of thinking that led to the change. As well as the fact that there were better solutions available. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Looks like they took three unused figures from Sinbad over in Tokyo and stuck them in Pan.

I’m also quite tired of the over-sanitization of Disneyland, but in this case, the Native American characters in the film have been widely seen as depicted in a racially insensitive light for decades, and their appearance in the ride matches their problematic appearance in the film. In my opinion, there is a world of difference between this change and, say, the trench coat they put on Jessica Rabbit.

What better solutions were available?

This was tastefully done. Hopefully this means they're learning. I feel like a couple years ago they would've just ripped them out, replaced them with some scenery and called it a day.

I agree. Especially because at Disneyland your boat flies past this scene in about 2 and a half seconds.

Previously, the only thing you saw was the teepee with some Indians and then heard an "Ugh!" sound from one of the Indians. Even 25 years ago riding this with my then-young nephews, I remember thinking to myself "Really? No one thought to get rid of the 'Ugh!' thing?" 🤣

This is a change that's been needed for decades. And like you say @BasiltheBatLord, that they did this well hopefully means they are learning. If they'd done this in 2020, they would have just ripped it all out and replaced it with a plywood tree.
