>>>STB nVIDIA TNT

??? WHat does that mean?<<<

It is an Nvidia TNT chipset, one that is several years old. It is even pre-GeForce, which means it doesn't support hardly any of today's games. Dude, when did you buy that computer? :)

>>>i've gotten an XP 1800 to OC to 1.6ghz @ 75 degrees, so i'm sure it could go a lot higher.<<<

DAMN! I've got to check that stuff out.

in the past, i have had problems using a matrox card with a via chipset, but it wasn't too hard of a problem to fix.

ceo, don't worry, I'll speak normal english. Your best bet is to just talk whoever has the checkbook (or credit card) into a whole new computer. If you want to go to a more powerful processor than what you have now, you'll have to get a new motherboard.

Wait, it gets more involved...

If you get a new motherboard for your new processor, you will probably have to get a new case, to handle the new motherboard which is probably a different size, and you will probably need to get a new power supply to support the new processor (more power for the more powerful processor).

As you can see, it's a vicious circle. So that's why I recommend just trying to get a new computer. The down side of that, is trying to copy and/or reload any programs, documents, files, graphics, etc., that are on your current system onto your new system.

Good luck.

I have a gforce 4 and I can`t get my mother board to go 4x agp even though it is 4x compatible,I called both Nvidia and via,and they said that nvidia had an incompatibity problem with via.

How many times has it crashed on you? The only thing I could get Morrowind to do on an XP box was crash. In fact, that is the only thing I can get any game to do on XP. And then there is the ridiculous Toys R' Us interface, hardware incompatability issues, horrific system requirements, etc. I hate XP. ;)

you might want to try installing all VIA drivers, before installing your nvidia drivers.

actually, xp doesn't crash at all for me. i fully agree about the whole "my first computer" interface (microsofts version of mac os). i don't use XP for anything other than gaming/entertainment. for all real work, i'm sticking with win2k sp2.

I upgraded to XP from ME last month. I had great concerns, but XP has been working just fine for me. I've been in Photoshop 5.5 a few times, and no problems. Downloaded digital video, edited, no problems.

Of course, there were a few driver issues I had to take care of, but I pretty much expected that after all the reports I've read.

Oh well, when the perfect OS gets marketed, I'm sure we'll all line up for it.

I allready did that!
I called tyran and via and nvidia and they all say that the problem I am having is a common problem with a conflict between via and nvidia.

I've yet to install a piece of hardware on my computer that XP didn't recognize and install properly.

Sure there's driver updates, but it's great that they run from the get-go. I used to hate doing a fresh install of '98 on a machine; you'd boot up at 16 colors 640 x 480 b/c it didn't even recognize the video card. Install XP, bam everything is found your set to go.

The "Toys R Us" interface can be turned off by moving a checkmark.

Windows 2000 is by far the most stable Windows vers. out now, but XP has some great features, and hardware compatability is one if it's strengths.

Don't go spending $1,700 on a computer that isn't even up to par with something you can custom build for about $900. Head over to sharkyextreme.com and spend a week or so researching on how to build a PC, then read parts reviews. It's a great experience and you'll learn TONS about computers when you build it yourself. Fun part is all you need is a screwdriver to put one together.

Don't bother upgrading your current machine, just keep it as a spare or something, not worth the money to upgrade it, as the motherboard needs to be replaced.

Feel free to ask me if you have any questions.
