>>>I've yet to install a piece of hardware on my computer that XP didn't recognize and install properly.<<<

We've got to be using different operating systems! My modem (which was brand new), printer, scanner, they all weren't recognized. After I went through that, I actually tried using the damned thing, only to have it crash repeatedly (this was on a PIII system). I finally said "to hell with it" and reinstalled Windows 98.

Then there are people who just don't like the new navigation in XP and all. I've had several people call me and *beg* me to "get this piece of s**t off of my computer!"

>>>Don't go spending $1,700 on a computer that isn't even up to par with something you can custom build for about $900.<<<

Amen.

Bought my motherboard/CPU, RAM, took my old video/sound card/hard drive/monitor from my old comp to finish it off for the time being.

Installed XP, up and running & surfing within an hour. Bought a new hard drive, installed fine. Bought a new GeForce 2 Pro/450, installed fine. Bought a new AOC 19" monitor, recognized without a problem. Bought a new TDK veloCD CD-RW, recognized and installed fine. Replaced an Iomega ZIP that was bad from my old comp, recognized just fine.

Gaming?

Unreal Tournament, Serious Sam 1 & 2 (serious 3D, no pun intended), Undying, NASCAR 2000 & 2002, Operation Flashpoint, Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed....and various others I don't play that often. All play absolutely fine for hours.

Software?

Photoshop, Flash, Lightwave, usually run at the same times at some point or another. Run apache/mySQL/php locally, and every small app I can run (winamp, winzip, aim, mIRC, etc, etc, etc). Usually run (when doing web work) at least 2-3 instances of IE along side of Photoshop, Winamp, and apache/mySQL/php while testing PHP scripts locally. Keep OE running in the background too.

The XP interface? I can't stand how many times I hear this is an "argument" against XP. Oh no! Well let's see.......switch to Classic!

Sigh....I've had this argument too many times. I'm leaving while I'm still calm.

MobileBadBoy... my sentiments exactly :)

pheneix -> something must be up, worked fine on quite a few machines I've installed it on :)... it's all good though, computers can be picky.

however, winXP can be made to function identically to win2k and below, in appearance and functionality, including the start menu.

Install XP, bam everything is found your set to go.

True, but XP offers simplicity at the expense of performance. IT has the worst ram usage of any OS i have touched since win95. While it isn't as bad as winME, i wouldn't use XP for anything other than gaming/entertainment.

True, I will give it that. I need to reboot way more often w/ XP than I used to w/ 2000, which I could leave running for weeks w/o rebooting. I go back and forth b/w the OS's, just depends on my mood :)

this is getting rediculous. since when is the value of an OS determined by how easy it is to install hardware? and the problems with the xp interface are hardly only based on how it looks. switching to classic only makes it look like a real os. it still navegates horrable, among other problems.

I've been using Win2000 Pro for about a year now... absolutely the best OS I have used. My sister uses XP on her Dell and I find it a bit too colorful and fancy for my taste. 2000 runs fine and the only thing wrong with it is that some of the older games and some 'flakey' games (poorly made, unstable) do not work.... no biggy, it just means no mid-90s Monopoly for me!

i fully agree. in fact, i have been known to run duel-boot with 98se so i oculd play my older games that won't work with win2k. but now that i have a seperate winxp computer, i use my 98 partition less and less.

i never found ram to be much of a factor in the freexing of operating systems. Win 98se (though i do love that one) is rather unstable. you may want to give win2k a try. yea, systemworks is great.
