I finally found a home to ask all the millions of questions that have always floated around in my brain! Man, I am excited!

Here is one that always bugged me:

Have Disney attractions, let's use It's a Small World for this thread, been the victim of Political Correctness? I know about Pirates of the Carribean and the feminism of the 1970's, which made me think of this question. From a layout and flow sense, it seems to me in IASW that that the Israel section has to be an add on and the native American in the final scene seems 'placed' on there, again after the fact and out of context?

I am sure this thread will (unreasonably) offend someone, but that is the nature of not being Politically Correct. So, oh well - it is just an idle curiousity.

The only one I am personally aware of is Pirates, but that was after the Eighties. My first visit was in 1987 and I'm pretty sure that all the pirates were chasing the women, which set up the gag of the last one being chased by the big woman.

These attractions are obviously static, but WE have changed since 1966. Surely there are little nuances that others may know about and that is the spirit of my query.

Example, I saw another thread about making Haunted Mansion 'scarier' - you know to keep up with 'the times'. Keeping up with 'the times' is obviously a double edged sword.

Not sure about IASW but the PoTC changes bother me. I see nothing wrong with the way it was. They were Pirates for god sakes. It is over the top trying to be PC by changing that.

If there was something offensive I can understand it, but it was not offensive.

I don't know of any change in sequence in IaSM. Generally organized by continents, then everyone together at the end in white.

Pirates is an irritation. I hope when (if) they refurb the ride that they put it back the way it should be.

The other one that bothers me is the shooting the hippo's with the gun on Jungle Cruise. How stupid is that?...I have heard some rumblings however that that may be returning.

What was the change (before/after)? Guns taken away? Sounds like E.T. DVD release...

The Jewish wedding wasn't in IASW when it first premiered at WDW. I'm not sure exactly when it first appeared, it was sometime around 1990. I know my wife and I discussed it on our honeymoon in 1991. ( we thought it was cool to see another wedding in the park). I don't know that it was any specific attempt to become PC, or if it was just an enhancement made along the way. There has always been a Shalom sign in the final scene. The Native American has always been there as far back as I can remember.I agree that the PoTC chase was a dumb move. I don't know why they think that the implicit violence of the pirates chasing the women was worse than the overt violence of the women chasing the pirates with sharp weapons.

The Native American always seemed odd because his first appearance is in the final utopian white area. Also, he is elevated above the path of the boat and that creates a unique reaction as a rider. To me it always seemed like IASW was HIS ride and HE was watching you leave. I liked that.

Thanks for the info on Israel. I am Glad to see my guessed observation was accurate.

The driver use to shoot at the hippos when they would come out and no longer. That whole ET things was dumb. The hands that held the tops of the shotguns in that scene now hold walkie talkies which does look realistic. It is the fact that the lower hand that was on the triggers looks odd cupped with nothing in it. Bad move...

PC Overhauls

My understanding that the PC overhauls were the brainchild of Cynthia Harriss, one of Paul Presslers lackies and a Gloria Aldred wannabe. Just one of the many stories from I think the darkest days of the parks that I hope and believe we are beginning to emerge from.

I agree that that final appearance is particularly interesting, I don't think that is the first appearance for native americans. I will have to research it a bit more, but I do believe there are cowboys and indians in the North America section.

As for the guns in Jungle cruise, there were guns carried by some of the animatronics and the skipper had to "shoot" the charging hippo to prevent damage to the boat. The degrees of silliness attached to shooting were as good as any of the lines on the trip.

I'm almost surprised they didn't try to take drinking out of PoTC as well...I know I have a strong urge to hit a pitcher or two after riding...but I settle for a Dole Whip. :animwink:

Were they at one time going to change the buy a bride scene in POTC? I had heard that it was offending some women as they were saying it was down grading. I for one am a woman and I personally don't find it or the scene where the pirates are chasing the women offending.

When It's A Small World was created for the 1964 New York World's Fair, both the Native American and Cowboy were present only at the very end of the ride.

The original It's A Small World that was created for the 1964 New York World's Fair was moved to Disneyland [California], where it has remained since 1966. Sometime around 2000 the ride was given a very welcoming facelift and restoration project. Besides all the fixes and tweaking to the sets and AA's, the exterior facade and clock were once again repainted white and gold. Many welcomed this from the years of the "pastel hell" facade.

The original 1964 New York World's Fair soundtrack was also brought back to the ride, as the original Disneyland version has ahrdly changed since it was moved from the fair.

I would think that the Florida version of IASW has always had the Native American and Cowboy. I mean not until 2004, has the ride recieved any significant rehab since it opened in 1971, just a few upgrades here and there.
Now I don't know what they will further do to Florida version. I do know as others know that the outside facade maybe changed just a little, but once we walk inside we will be greeted with a replica of the california facade, complete with the clock. I can't wait to see that, but I wonder if they will too paint in white and gold, and not "pastel hell". :hammer: We will also be getting the original 1964 fair soundtrack, which makes me wonder how much they will change this ride to be more like Disneyland's...

So I think IASW has never been really changed too much as to become politically correct, nor will it probably ever result in that.

Sorry if this was a bit off topic, but atleast I got the part in on the Native American and Cowboy. :lookaroun
