Paying a fee to cut in line??

But, you know, I think about it especially with celebs I think if that was the only way you ever saw the parks it would really stink.

Unfortunately, this is how celebrities have to spend their entire lives, including visiting WDW. Even if they wanted to wait in lines it would be impossible. Too many people bothering them for autographs, pictures, etc. I imagine it DOES "stink," and there's nothing they can do about it.

Imagine having everyone constantly staring at you, saying hi, wanting to shake your hand, etc...and they're all complete strangers to you. The attention may be nice for about a day, after that you'd just want to strangle everyone.

I hate when strangers talk to me on airplanes, etc. and I am nobody!! - I could not imagine people staring, talking pictures, talking nonsense, etc. all the while knowing stupid, intimate details about my life (I hear you like the Starbucks salted caramel latte so it's my favorite too). While the "magic" is ruined, I guess it's better than their entire day being swarmed.

Although it's easy to say for me since I don't and probably never will have the money for it, part of the magic of Disney to me is waiting in the lines, seeing all the theming, sights, and sounds. It helps build anticipation and story going into the ride. I love that aspect of it.

Or just a new member asking a completely honest question.

^

But you never know, behind the scenes there could be this massive Disney conspiracy about jacking up prices involving Fastpass, right next to the unproven myth Disney is cutting budgets...

Jimmy Thick-Face it, Disney does not read this forum...

A few years ago we were chosen to be in one of Disney's "What Will You Celebrate" commercials and the day of the shooting, our group (3 families, 14 people total) was escorted through the parks by two VIP tour guides - Jeremy & Alexis. It was very cool way to start the vacation since this was done on our first day.

We were staying at OKW and they picked us up in two vans and took us to the character breakfast at Tusker House through a backstage entrance - picked up the tab too even we had this meal reserved prior to being chosen.

From AK we went to Hollywood Studios and in through the backstage entrance near ToT. We were escorted onto ToT, RnRC and TSMM through the VIP entrances bypassing the lines.

From there it was back into the vans to MK where the shooting was to be done. We once again entered backstage near Main Street. The kids wanted to do HM so went through the VIP entrance there and then to lunch at Columbia Harbor House - again the tab was picked up.

Then it was time to shoot the commercial. First we had a private boat on JC going around twice. Then it was off to BTMRR were we road three times in row without getting off - interesting watching the cameraman filming while riding backwards. From there we went to the Rose Garden near the castle where they filmed some more and had a private meet and greet with Mickey & Minnie.

Very cool to see how the other half lives and a great experience for the kids.

How in the world were you chosen for the commercial?

Completely random. We booked the trip for the three families as a Grand Gathering. We received a phone call from Disney asking what, if anything, we would be celebrating. Told them that it was a reunion of friends who worked together but have moved on to different jobs across three states and thought WDW would be a good place to get together. They asked that we send some photos of us, especially the kids.

We received a another call about two weeks later saying they chose our group. Lucky I guess

Or you looked right.

They picked X amount of groups that booked in times that they were filming, asked them for photos, and they picked the ones that fit the profile they were looking for.

In this case, you were lucky. And marketable.

Must have been the kids - not us.

These tours do not seem like a very enjoyable way to experience the parks in my opinion anyway

They don't sound enjoyable to us because they really aren't at all directed towards people like us. Fans know the parks, and know the way that they want to enjoy them. However, if you are extremely wealthy and you have never really been to Disney before these tours can be a saving grace for you. Odds are that the people who are willing to shell out thousands for a tour guide are also staying concierge at a resort. So between the concierge and the guides they will make sure that you are completely taken care of with as little planning as possible on your end. To some people that is what they want out of a vacation...they don't want to worry about planning dining and recreation. They want it all taken care of, and have the financial resources to make it possible.

To the posts about most everyone with Guest Relations are rich or famous::

On a Monday in early January '11 I was in line for popcorn by SM and was in line behind a GR and family of 5 (Mother and 4 kids ages 6-16ish). They didn't look like some big celebrity or even a family who had a lot of money. But my BF and I overheard them talking. The older daughter looked at mom and had mentioned something about being shocked and how the kids at school wouldn't believe this. Mom replied "they will when they wake up and see your face all over the state of North Carolina news." So, with my trusty iPhone I went to google. The first thing that came to mind was an EMHE family. Of course it was the right guess!

Moral: Not every family with GR is rich. They may have just received an amazing gift and are on the trip of a lifetime (where everything is paid for) while their home gets destroyed and they get a miracle! :)

Fourteen people, three families, just the right kids, vailable for a day of shooting...

...all for the price of two meals and two tour guides. No model agency can compete with these prices. No child labor laws or actors union to content with either. Genius. :zipit:

/I'm too cynical for this world.
