Pay for Photo With Mickey? What the What?

We were at WDW a few weeks ago and didn't see Mickey at EPCOT but saw Mickey at MGM in his greet area in Sorceror Mickey costume and there was a CM taking pics for purchase but with no obligation. But the other CM there still offered to take the entire group pic with Mickey with our own camera as well with no charge.

We did end up buying the professional one though. In past years I have often scoffed at buying the pictutes that they take but since I've started taking the time to check them out, I find myself buying them more and more. They are so much better than the pictures we take in most cases. This last time, we purchased the picture with Mickey, a picture in front of the Castle at MK where they made it look like my kids were holding Tinkerbell in the their hands, a group picture at Chef Mickey's and another group shot in the Kodak picture lab place at EPCOT following the Journey into Imagination with Figment attraction.

All right, I talked with my sis who just got home from her trip and had a fabulous time.

Here is what happened as best I can tell:

It was an early admission morning at EPCOT (Center) and the double decker bus came rolling up, loaded with characters. As the characters exited the bus, lines formed for people to get autographs and have photos made with the various characters which included Mickey & Minnie, Donald, Pluto, Goofy, Rafiki, Timon and some others.

At the Mickey and Donald ques, Disney photographers were taking photos. Because everyone in the line was having the Disney photographer snap the photo, SHE ASSUMED photos could only be taken by the Disney photographer. She didn't ask for permission to snap a photo with her own camera.

Having the Disney photographers there to take photos of people with the characters was something new since the last visit. In past visits, the Disney photographers were always offering to snap photos with the landmark in the background (Cindarella's Castle, Spaceship Earth, etc.), but never with characters.

So there it is - a misunderstanding. If there is anything to be learned it might be to be BOLD when you want to take a photo of anything at WDW when there is a Disney photographer around - speak up and ask if you can take a photo with your own camera, and chances are good that you will find out that you can. ;)
