Is there anyone else out there that heard that the Security baggage check areas at the Disney parks are going to become permanent? I read this over at Orlandorocks and was just wondering if it was true.

I'm not suprised given the present political climate. We went thru these last time (our first visit since 9/11). It took a little longer, but it wasn't really that bad. It's just something we will have to get used to.

If you're not carrying bags they're great...cause everyone else gets stuck waiting to have their bags checked, while you fly right on through the "no bags" line.:D

when we were there last Easter they went thru EVERYTHING. My husband had his camera in a cloth case on his belt and they made him take it off and went thru that. We had to take the batteries off our cell phones and then turn them on again. They went thru my diabetic kit and wanted to take my lancets...had to explain that I needed them to test my blood. They wanted me to have security present when I did it, but I refused...I don't know if things have changed any, but that is what we went thru. It really didn't take all that much time and they were polite.
We knew they were there and had our bags open and ready to go when we got to the front of the line. It's when you have to start digging for things that you get backed up.

In the light of current world affairs it would make sense to make them permanent. Then, when the threat of war is over they can still keep the bag checks to prevent people taking their own food into the parks and double the food prices inside the parks

Sounds like the check have gotten a little more intence, but still training of security is still an issue.

A properly trained security person would know better than to question medical requirements like diabetics to the extent you describe.

Yes they have to be careful, but they also have to act in a way that isn't going to scare visitors.

I for one will NEVER complain about having my bag searched, but I do get pretty peeved if the searcher is incompetant as I have seen too many times at WDW.

I had gone down to WDW in April 2002 on a special that Disney Co. had put together for the NYPD/FDNY/EMTs/and military that worked in both DC and NY...(the only reason I would go at that time) I never felt as safe as I did when I got down there....

But it is easy for you "GUY's" to just walk on throu...but as a girl...even with my purse...I had to wait on that line...and I was very happy and proud to open it. This is a practice that should have always been taken care of.

I know at Six Flags...you need to go throu a metal detector!...and that has always been around...

It is good that they are making the security stations permanent. They have needed them for a while IMO. I remember going to Epcot for New Years 2000 and there were over 100,000 people in there, all crowded around the World Showcase Lagoon at midnight. There was absolutely no checking of any bags or anything that morning letting people in. In a situation like that it would be easy for a suicide bomber to do maximum damage or even for insane person with a couple of guns to kill many people.

In general, the parks were built with no thought of security. I've been on several backstage tours and there was nothing stopping someone from getting backstage at Epcot or MGM and probably not even Magic Kingdom and leaving a truck bomb or even driving right into the park itself. Sure, they would be discovered but there is no way they could be stopped before it was too late. Imagine the feeling seeing Spaceship Earth or Cinderella Castle in ruins on the front page of every newspaper in the world. Several hundred or even a few thousand people could be killed. Add to that the emotional impact and you are talking about an event that could literally plunge the country into some serious economic problems.

Personally, I do not feel unsafe at the parks but Disney does need to keep up with the times when it comes to security.

Can anyone comment on how long it takes to get through the bag check lines? Is it just a few minutes, and do they have multiple personnel checking? Or do they use this as a natural chokepoint for limiting people in the park?

Also, are you allowed to bring things like snack crackers, bottled water, and so forth?

Thanks,
-Robert

My wife and I went in early December of last year and the bag check was a breeze...if you do your part. Have your bag open and ready. My wife would have her purse opened up and I had our backpack ready. They look thoroughly and were very polite. They were also very quick. I didn't find that they were using it as a "choke point" at all. Of course, that time of the year, the crowds were very light, so that might have helped my impressions just a little bit.

You can take snacks, but not bottled water.

I second that. But I have to say, we had very competent checkers when we went. I guess we just got lucky. I'll gladly let them check my bag if it means I can feel more secure once inside the park.

Now, when we flew home, we were checked multiple times at the Orlando airport. They chose our luggage to x-ray and then pulled us from the line at the plane boarding and checked my wife and I both thoroughly.

I can assure you, they weren't profiling. The only ones being checked were caucasian!

The airport checking hadn't ramped up some much when we were there last July 2002.

On the way IN to the US our cases were x-rayed and there was a massive queue for that, kinda reminded me of early 2001 when the BSE outbreak was in full effect.

On the way home we checked in just like normal, there were a few extra security questions but nothing else at the airport.

Back to the parks. In July 2002 we were at WDW with our kids (6 & 1 at the time) so we had a diaper bag with all our daughters bits including a box of Pampers wipes that we keep at the bottom of the bag for changing he nappy.

Anyway it wasn't until our 11th or 12th day that a bag check actually spotted this and ask to look inside it. (bare in mind that we went to a Disney park nearly every day) Now one of these boxes could easily conceal a handgun or a quiet powerful bomb.

To me it would seem that the 10 or 11 previous time the security were incompetant and that doesn't make me feel safe. Some might argue that they 'profile' guests and that I don't *look* like a terrorist.

That's rubbish in any arguement, because there is NO definition of what a terrorist would look like.

Anyway, I've made this rant before so I'll shut up now.

I appreciate that WDW are looking out for our safety and would never complain about being checked, I just worry that a real terrorist could slip by if checks aren't good enough.

Parks.

The security on the gates that I experienced in Nov will never foil a determined trained terrorist. We just have to except that. However it will deter or stop the deranged nut who sees this as a way of getting the eternal life and 22 virgins that his mullah has promised him.
