The next phase of construction in Paradise Pier is now underway: Paradise Garden. This new area will feature two re-themed restaurants along with an expanded outdoor dining area. Pizza Oom Mow Mow will become Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta, and Burger Invasion will reopen as the Paradise Garden Grill.

Here's the information posted in MiceChat's DCA Project Tracker:

Paradise Garden - Expanded dining courtyard

Covering the area encompassing Pizza Oom Mow Mow, Burger Invasion, and the S. S. rustworthy, the new Paradise Garden dining area will re-purpose the existing dining facilities and reuse the current S.S. rustworthy water play area for an expanded dining courtyard with Victorian-style theming in a lush garden setting.

The first construction walls went up this week. We will probably see a lot more walls in this area as the project progresses.

My goodness! The new facility looks stunningly detailed. Pizza Oom Mow Mow is rather cheap looking from the outside (compared to what it could have been if they had gone all out on the Tiki Surf Shack theme), but it does have some neat surfing artifacts on display inside. But Burger Invasion is horrible looking inside and out. Just bad, bad, bad.

For those of us who have been following DCA for a decade, these relatively minor changes to stuff like food courts and dining patios are almost too fabulous to believe. I remember vividly getting my first look into this part of DCA in November, 2000 when I had a room in the Paradise Pier Hotel. We stared out the window at the Route 66 seciont of the park and thought "Is that really what they just built?"

But now it's being completely redone and rethemed. It's like you want someone to pinch you to make sure you aren't just dreaming all of this.

^ I think the crazy california/beach culture theme is interesting but wasn't as fully fleshed out as it could have been. As opposed to Burger Invasion, Pizza Oom Mow Mow is actually themed really well inside. But with the new early Victorian theme coming to the pier, it just won't fit in anymore.

The expanded dining courtyard is really needed - with so many new visitors coming, it can be hard to find a table during peak dinner/lunch time (especially in the Pacific Wharf area.)

-

A bit of news today - Pizza Oom Mow Mow has an official closing date: September 7, 2010. (reported by MousePlanet).

Both restaurants are set to reopen May 24, 2011.

My gosh but that corner of DCA was ugly! There was just no way to make it look flattering, in pictures or in real life.

The only thing worth saving there are the mature trees. Whatever they do to this corner of the park will be an improvement.

A list of upcoming closures, all set to close next week:

Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta (formerly Pizza Oom Mow Mow) and Paradise Garden Grill (formerly Burger Invasion.) are currently scheduled to open in Spring, 2011. The two locations will share a 900-seat outdoor dining area that will be constructed in the space currently occupied by the S.S. Rustworthy and Reboundo Beach (the basketball-themed carnival game now in front of Pizaa Oom Mow Mow). Burger Invasion is already closed; Pizza Oom Mow Mow, S.S. Rustworthy and Reboundo Beach all close the evening of September 6th.

So pretty much this entire corner will be walled off to begin work on Paradise Garden. DCA construction really hits into high gear soon, with Maliboomer and Bountiful Valley Farm closing next week as well.

I just love that they are using Character artwork circa 1930 on these construction walls!

Of course, they are doing it because it fits the new theme of the area, like they did with Silly Symphony Swings. But it's an overall look to Mickey and the gang that hasn't been seen publicly in a very long time. This is truly a period look for Mickey Mouse and the other core Disney Characters of the 1920's and 30's. A really fun and unique take on what has become an almost bland corporate icon!

I love these walls :) Always fun to see classic Mickey at the parks. Pretty exciting to see this unfold, I can't wait to see how they transform this area..

Work is well underway at Paradise Garden, as workers remove the planters and get the land ready for construction.

The former PT Fleas building has already made the move, although it hasn't been installed in its final location yet.

Work is progressing pretty rapidly here... The SS Rustworthy play area was demolished last week and crews are slowly taking apart the exterior of the two closed restaurants.

Wow. We knew this little corner of the DCA makeover would go down to the bare bones and bare dirt and start over, but to see it happening is just amazing.

It's so clearly apparent now that what WDI has done here in this Billion dollar makeover project is to go in to DCA like a surgeon with a scalpel and cut out all the weakest parts and replace them with all new parts.

This Paradise Garden/Goofy's Sky School area is not going to be something to hype in the media, but it's going to make such a huge overall difference for that entire corner of the Pier. With the adjacent remake of the swings, the removal of the Maliboomer, and the huge Mermaid development all happening around the Grill/Goofy's area, it's a radical change from what it all looked like and contained from 2001 to 2008.

Simply and utterly amazing. And seemingly unprecedented in the history of modern Disney theme parks.

I wonder if all the early season rain we've had has slowed them down here? It doesn't look like it, and I was expecting to see mud behind the walls after this weekend's rain, but I guess it dried out.

Or maybe these pics were taken Sunday morning, before that storm moved in Sunday night?
