I also imagine that people lose interest in them after a while. I don't believe you can update the settings/info on Mickey. Other rumored/tested devices that provide similar info are much more easily updatable.

"[FONT=Trebuchet MS, tahoma, arial, helvetica]Walt Disney World Resort Announcement
October 9, 2008

As a result of our efforts to evaluate product offerings as technology continues to evolve, Pal Mickey, the interactive plush that was introduced in 2003 for use at the four Walt Disney World® Theme Parks, will be discontinued. Although Pal Mickey will no longer be available for purchase, the interactive plush will continue to operate in the four theme parks as they do today."

This seems like a good sign that they will continue to work. I love my one so much I take him on all our trips. Always makes us sad though when we turn him on at home as it reminds us so much of being at WDW and makes it feel like a long time till the next visit. But then when it is a week to go and I start setting him off it gets everyone hyped up, all very amusing! :ROFLOL:

"Which means it won't work in the 5th park we are currently building." :lookaroun:lookaroun:lookaroun :ROFLOL:

It should continue working for the foreseeable future. Kinda like the 100th anniversary light up pins that blinked on assorted attractions, they worked (and I think someone said they still do in a few places) until the in-park triggers broke/were removed. When the sensors break or get removed as part of refurbs, I don't think they will replace them.

Pal Mickey continues to work just fine in the parks. They are not selling new versions any longer and you can not buy them in the parks any more.

Pal Mickey never had the support or funding to make it an extraordinary device like it had the potential to be. Everything was very half-assed about the program, from not coming out with alternative characters (Pal Pooh was supposed to have been released but never was) to it taking them two years to release costumes for the Pal, to never adding in the functionality that the patent detailed.

Because of all of this, Pal wound up just passing time until they pulled the plug entirely. It's a shame because it could have really been a lot more awesome had they given it time, attention and support.

Mine quickly became a backpack accessory. I never like that they didn't have a volume control on him (was hard to hear sometimes outside). As a collector, I'm happy to have one and enjoyed the time I used it. I let my nephews bring him along when we go and they like the interaction.

I totally agree, it's an awesome concept, just needed someone to run with it and develop the technology. Cost is not as much of an issue if it's something really advanced and entertaining...think of how much $ is spent on 1 video game!

Ah yes, Pal Mickey. :(
Good idea, but was too cumbersome to carry.
Loved the info, but something else to worry about during a trip.
I do have the first version, a Spanish version, and the HCOE version. And they all do work.

Never knew there would be alternative characters to the franchise. And somewhere, sometime ago, I found this website devoted to Pal Mickey costumes. Pretty cool to see all the alternative costumes, especially the Chef Mickey version. Probably hand made.

Funny thing was I remember buying a small dog sweatshirt for my Pal Mickey when it was first released back in 2003. Then some time later, I see Disney with "their" idea of a costumed Pal Mickey!   Just saying....
