I can relate.

I live on the East Coast and WDW used to be my 'home' Resort.
I'm a huge EPCOT Center fan, and adored that Park back when it was in its glory in the 80s when I lived in Florida.
What a place!
In later years I moved North, but would still takes trips down to Orlando to visit the Parks in the 90s and early 2000s
It became yearly in the early 2000s, but then I stopped cold in January of 2013.
The experience was not what it once was.

Over the years I've seen too much chipped away with 'replacements' that are inferior to what came before, and too much focus on making a quick buck when the focus used to be more about wowing the Guest.
Add into the mix my dislike of how that property has been managed over the last decade or so, and the FP+ restraints.
WDW lost me once I headed West and experienced Disneyland on my own for the first time in 2007.

Disneyland 'spoiled' me rotten....talk about rolling out the red carpet!
Instead of being made to feel like a 'cog in the wheel' at WDW, being 'processed' with thousands of other Guests, at DLR I was 'embraced' like a personal friend of Walt's.
The Cast, and the settings within the Park itself, made a huge difference and made it intimate and exciting all at once.
The differences were stunning...such a vast improvement in my eyes.

I was immediately wowed by this 'tiny little Park' in the middle of Anaheim and now visit yearly.
I have not been back to WDW since, but still care about the property and its future.
Disneyland is my 'home' now....until WDW can prove to me that the time has come to return.

I will admit I do look forward to that return in some aspects, but I have the patience of a rock.

It's funny you mention that you are treated like Walt's friend at DL. I usually feel like a second class citizen.:( A lot of the characters had "friends" that they talk to for extended periods, but they never seem to talk to my family for any great length like they do to the regulars. Again, just my experience. Also I cringe everytime a cast member would ask if I was an annual pass holder. I get so many blank/surprised looks when I tell them I'm not and I get embarrassed. I've been four times to DL for the run Disney races, but I can't say that I would go if not for the races. I know I'm in the minority in this opinion, but I'm glad you found a place that treats you so well.:)

Im sorry to hear that, FigmentsPigments.
Try not to feel embarrassed about being asked if you are a Annual Passholder...most Cast are required to ask you if you make any kind of a purchase.
AP holders receive slight discounts for meals and merchandise, so that is why they may ask you.

As far as meeting characters goes, most of the characters you will meet in the Parks respond really well to Guests who take the time to actually interact with and talk to them.
Just walking up to get a couple of photos together doesn't leave much time for the character to really perform for you.
That interaction, even if just a quick moment, means just as much to you as it does to the character.

Try some fun conversations....like how much you liked their movie, or ask about another related character from their own 'world'.
Compliment them on their clothing outfit, hat, or such.
I've had some very memorable character moments on my own by just doing this...give it a try next time.
You may well be surprised at how they react!

Agree with this completely my 3yo at the times idea but he wanted to take Ariel a dinglehopper.. so we packed a silver plastic fork in our suitcases ... when we met her he gave it to her and she went wild ... thanking him, brushing her hair with it, comparing it to her prop version, asking him what he 'Prince Archie' does with his and Prince Eric tries to eat food with his.

It was amazing for him and have Ariel 5 mins to play instead of sit - wave fishtail - smile - bye.

The more you play up to them the more you get back.. theyvhace to pose for hundreds of photos a day... yea it's there job but they're just waiting for an op to play up to the characters traits!

I excellent time to visit this year would be in September.
By that time, not only will 'Paint The Night' be back in action but the new edition of Disneyland's ' Fantasmic!!' should also be showing in the Park.

If you visit in early September, crowds are a little lighter since the Halloween Parties typically don't begin until later in the month.
'Haunted Mansion Holiday' ( the 'Nightmare Before X-mas overlay ) typically opens the second Friday of the month which brings in large crowds of locals though....so just be prepared for that.

If you do decide to visit later in the month however, you may get to experience the newly re-opened Disneyland Railroad route and refreshed Rivers of America.
Last I heard, that was a possible opening time.
The new river front scenery looks to be a nice plussing.

Thanks for the information. We are looking at a first trip in 2018 and are trying to decide on what time of year to go - the information about Halloween and Haunted Mansion Holiday was helpful.

At DL they actually value the AP holder because they are the core of the business and DL still thinks long term yes while an AP holder may not spend as much per visit they over the course of a year spend more than a One and Done visitor.

Where WDW is all about short term thinking and an AP holder is seen as 'bad business' because they dilute the PRGS and PCGS metrics

And NO a night time parade is NOT COMING BACK TO WDW at least while Iger and Cronies are at the helm

sadly all of this, although they should be ashamed at how they view passholders, thats a ridiculous business model, precious metrics, please!

I should mention that I was not a AP holder at Disneyland my first few visits when I was receiving 'royal treatment'.
The Cast out there just have a talent for making you feel 'special', at least that was my impression on my first few visits.
Some really cool personal acknowledgements, and I was alone and not dressed like a 'Disney freak'.
It might have been my Tony Baxter Fan Club button however...pinned to my shirt....that motivated them to interact with me.
I've had many memorable experiences with Cast because of it!
;).

When I did finally decide to get a Disneyland AP in 2014, my first ever on either coast, things became a little more personal.
Cast would greet me at the Park entrance turnstiles by name , as your name is on your APs backside.
"Welcome back to Disneyland, Figments Friend!".
:jawdrop:
I was so surprised yet delighted when that first happened....having been so used to being just 'processed' at WDW.
The little personal touches like this made a difference.

I will say that this has dropped off a little....the personalization in some respects, but if you visit twice within a years' time a AP saves you some money on admission and elsewhere.
Cast are still responsive and great out there....the Resort in Anaheim keeps me coming back time and again.

My God why must you guys persist! The parade is in Anaheim! Not in Orlando and def not in Paris. Why are people so desperate for this parade to leave Disneyland?

I truly believe this thread is part of the grieving process for many WDW fans. They simply can't believe that "their" resort, WDW, would have management that is so cheap and so visionless as to pull all night parades out of WDW. This thread is part of the process of coming to terms with that ugly reality.

I just can't wait to get back to DLR sometime soon! There is something special about the place and it's really hard to describe what it is. It just has "it".

That "it" is Walt. Disneyland has Walt in spades. Some folks describe Disneyland as having charm, style, panache, elegance, and wit. But that's really just Walt.

The Orlando property had Card Walker instead of Walt Disney, and it shows. It doesn't help that the Orlando property now has senior executives who make decisions like the night parade situation we are discussing here. But they never had Walt to begin with, which hurts.

Hard to believe WDW was once at the top when it came to the amount of entertainment back in the 90's.

So you must have been calling Disneyland cheap for the past 20 years when they did not have a nighttime parade? Just because a park does not have a nighttime parade does not mean it's cheap... WDW had to ship the msep to Disneyland since Disneyland wanted it back to replace Ptn.
He's talking about TDO's reputation of it's cheapness, and MSEP isn't replacing PTN. I will be calling it when PTN returns sometime this Summer or this year. And finally, he isn't calling Disneyland cheap.
