overdosing on disney magic

Hey all!

About 2 months before my last trip to the world, i could not get enough disney. i was watching disney movies, youtubing every disney video on the internet, listening to disney music, reading unofficial guides again and again, and basically doing anything i could to get my disney fix since i couldn't contain my excitement.

In the process of doing all of this, i built up my expectations of disney magic and what to expect way too high. Although I had a good time, it was as though i had already seen everything and done everything to the point where the magical moments were few and far between.

I am leaving for the world in 2 weeks and asides from trip planning research, occasional classic disney movies and animated shorts, and going to wdwmagic to make sure i don't miss any major announcements, i have resisted temptation to over dose on disney again.

Has anyone else out there overdosed before a trip to the point where your trip isn't as magical? if so, what are the best remedies to make sure it doesnt happen again?!

I found, that you don't want to get too hyped up for certain things. For instance, after not having gone for nearly 10 years I was ready to learn all I could to make sure my wife and I had the best time in our short time there. But, you have to be careful. I was disappointed that I could not get Le Celliar and Boma reservations, and was disappointed in the meal/experience at the often lauded Prime Time Cafe. But you know what? I really enjoyed the meals I had at Yak & Teti, and Tokyo Dining, and they were two places I did not even have reservations for! Do planning, but don't go crazy, keep a few "open" hours and meals so that you can suprise yourself.

Oh, and avoid the temptation to view youtube videos of rides etc...I made sure not to view too many pics or reviews of Expedition Everest because, as George Costanza's dad says of going to the movies "I like to go in fresh!"

Its hard not to get into all the hype. But even I, an avid Disneyholic who goes quite often has to agree with you. My husband the closer he gets to the trip talks about it, twenty-four seven. It sometimes gets to the point where I have to say enough is enough. So yes, we plan and get excited but I try not over talk about especially after the ADR's and things are set. I also try to give myself some down time away after we return. Those this does and doesn't work. But at least I try, and it helps somewhat.

I've never done it to myself but I think I may have been a little "too much" for my fiancee on our last trip.

I think sometimes we need to temper our excitement and Disney-pschosis to tolerable levels for the people we're going with. Unless of course all people going are nuts!!!

I did this with our 2008 trip. I way overobsessed about it. I got up every morning thinking about it, would think about it all day, talk about it all the time, constantly watch travel channel shows about WDW, etc. And this was months out, not just a month or so before time to leave. I allowed our upcoming WDW trip to become my focus in life and then when we finally got there, it was a big letdown. Probably because when you hype something up in your mind to such a high level, the real thing can't possibly live up to the expectation that you have made in your mind. Kind of like the Star Wars prequel. I was a kid in the 80s, and I loved Star Wars. I was always fascinated by the backstories and rumors of prequels. After spending all my childhood longing for prequels, when I finally heard, in my college years, that they were making prequels, I was so excited. However when I actually went to see them in the theater, it was a letdown. Sure, the movies were good, but after spending most of my life longing for those prequels and having these expectations in my mind of what they would be like, the real thing couldn't meet those expectations and I was disappointed.

I have had to be reminded of the fact that vacations are fine, and I do enjoy that annual trip to WDW, yet it is not good to make that the "god" of my life. There is a certain amount of long term planning required for each trip, but other than that, it is good to remind yourself (as I have had to remind myself) that there are other priorities to focus on and think about on a day to day basis and not to let your life be so consumed by Disney that it takes over your life. Our 2008 trip lacked almost any magic. It was fun, on the one hand, but I kind of felt like I was burned out on it after the first day. Probably because, in my mind, I had already been there everyday for the past year or so.

This is easy to do and I have done that myself in the past many times. But I find that if you do new things when you are there (something that you haven't done or experienced) then you will still be surprised. There are SO many things to do and see that many people don't even know about. Also keep your eye on the prize. Don't start "looking" for things to pick the place apart that's going to bother you. Obviously there are going to be little things like a piece of trash on the ground or paint chipping off somewhere but look past that and onto the overall feeling the place gives you. When all esle fails just listen to the music.
