Trip Report Our 19-Day Mediterranean Adventure – Greece, Turkey and the Search for Free Wifi

Finally, right? It seems like I’ve been waiting forever to start this, but really we’ve only been back three weeks! And in that time I’ve lived in a hotel for two weeks and driven across the country from Washington DC to our new home in...wait for it...Las Vegas! For some reason I have chosen now, surrounded by boxes that need to be unpacked, as the time to start my trip report. Stalling maybe? :D So here it goes!

What: A massive 19 day (13 days on the cruise with 6 more including travel time and extra days in Europe) trip extravaganza. A 12 night Mediterranean cruise with a day in London beforehand and a few days in London and Barcelona afterwards. So yes. This is going to be a long stinking trip report. Oh, and I took 5239 pictures. On my camera! That doesn’t even count the Instagram/iphone photos you’ll see scattered throughout the report.

Great day in the morning.

Why: Because cruises are awesome mostly. But also because I was able to do a last-minute 11 night Med cruise back in April of 2010 with my daughter and some other family and friends, so this was a makeup cruise for my son and husband. It worked nicely as a graduation trip/present. :)

When: June 13-July 1, 2013

I booked this cruise the day it came out, back in January of 2012.

As time got closer we realized it was going to get crazy. My daughter was going to have to miss the last day of school, my son was graduating from high school the Saturday before the trip, we had a house full of family that whole weekend and a big graduation party on Sunday, he then left and was coming home one day early from his senior trip to make it on time, and we were moving across the country to Las Vegas so our household goods were all moved the day before we left. Then the kids were traveling with their youth group to Scotland 3 days after the cruise ended, so it really didn’t make sense for us to come all the way back home and we needed to stay in Europe for three more days before we dropped them off in London Heathrow. Got all that? Yes. Like I said, a little crazy.

Totally worth it though. :)

Who: Us! Here we are a few days before we left! This picture is a celebration of the whole Whiting family – but mostly Chase. The high school graduate. Also appearing in this photo are myself-Tammy, hubby-Stephen, and daughter – Ally.

My parents! My parents were on our last Med cruise, and have been in several of my trip reports. They had quite the trip in store for them. Here they are in Monaco:

My in-laws! My in-laws were also on my last Med cruise, as well as a few other cruises with us, so they may look familiar if you've ever read one of my reports. Here they are in Palo:

My brother-in-law! Scott has appeared in a few trip cruise trip reports as well. He’s the oldest of three boys with my hubby falling in the middle. Here he is in Mykonos:

Tonight’s show was Once Upon a Song which is only performed on long cruises. It’s a group of 5-6 men and women performing Disney songs. I loved it last time I saw it, I loved it this time.
One of my favorite shows, to be honest. Very simple. No big sets or staging. Just fun songs done well. Glad they still use it!

P.S. -- One thing you haven't mentioned at all is PINS!! :D Did they have pins just for your itinerary? I should have send you a couple hundred bucks to buy them all for me!!

I totally agree! Everyone in our group liked it.

I haven't! We have so many books full of pins that we don't do anything with. I don't even look anymore! Shame on me. But yes, I know they had some! I would have bought them for you!

Okay, I have to know - what's the top pic of? It looks sort of like onion rings but my brain says that can't be right.
Calimari, I would bet.

Correct! :)

Whew, I've finally caught up!

This is a great picture of Ally. I'll have to remember this pose and her kick attempt for when I go to Pisa - they're a nice change from THE picture (which I'm sure I'll pose for also :p)

I know, right? Stephen sat down and said, "I can not believe we are about to eat pizza. In an Irish Pub. In Rome." Lol

While I haven't done that exact combination during my travels, I'll have to plead the fifth about eating similar meal (including once in Greece). But when you're feeling the hanger (great mashup by the way) anything works

On new trips I tend to read different websites whenever I have time. Whenever I see a good tip or directions that I think apply, I cut and paste them into a word doc about that trip. Then when the trip gets close, I go read the doc, delete whatever I don't think will apply, and create my own plan off of things that I think do. Then I print it! Which I forgot to do this time. :)

I'm the same, and I even save tips for potential trips (what can I say, I learned in grad school that research is my friend :geek:). I have a word document where the tips from various trip reports are alphabetized by country and city - your tip to use the group exit to avoid the line is going there too

When we stopped back in the room, Stephen said my dad was looking for me. He said mom had a rough night and they were finally accepting that she needed help and going to medical.

I went to their room to check on them. Dad was there, but mom was in the clinic sleeping. They finally knew what was wrong! She had –

Pneumonia!!! :(:(:(

I was in shock! I, mistakenly, thought pneumonia developed from a cold or other illness and she hadn’t been sick at all before day 3 of the cruise. They had hooked her up to an IV drip for an hour. The doctor, also mistakenly, told her she should feel better in 24 hours or so.

I was so sad for her! But so glad we knew what it was!

Your poor Mom :( I had pneumonia before, and it is not something I'd want to deal with while on vacation, especially in a Greek hospital like the one they were sent to

Great job on the trip report once again. I'm looking forward to the rest (and to the trip reports for the girls' cruise coming up)

You're almost done Tammy! :) 3 more days to go that's it!

Mykonos was B-E-A-UTIFUL! Some day would love to go there, that cafe just seemed so cozy I could probably just stay there all day and go check out that beach even though I'm not a big beachy person.

Oh you bet now that you mentioned you said Sea Day exactly like that commercial...you better watch out next Wednesday.....SEEEEAAA DAYYY!!!! :) LOL.

The kicking post would be a nice change! I think she was looking for something different since we already had this one!

It happens. Food is food when you're hungry! :)

That's awesome! I need to sit down and take the time to organize all of mine!
The Group exit tip is awesome. It's at the back right of the chapel. Just blend in with a group if you need to!

Yes, in a Greek hospital alone, is definitely not the place to deal with it. We were so relieved when we sailed away!
Thank you for reading, dnylla!

Almost done!!! Unfortunately I have had to neglect reading every other trip report to get it done! But I think I will!

It's so beautiful. I could have stayed in the cafe even longer probably. It was so relaxing!

SEAAAAA DAYYYYYY!!! We'll all do it! Lol

Day 13: Malta

Valletta! I was super excited about this port! We had something so fun planned for today!! What, you ask?

We were doing – Segways!!!

Yay!

We booked these directly through the company – Segways by Malta. We did it that way for a couple of reasons. One - it was about half the price. Two - Ally wasn’t old enough if we booked through Disney. Disney wanted guests to be 16.

Alright, make me save money!:D

Breakfast at Topsiders first!

Hello, Malta!

We met the company outside the port.
