This year has not been a good year for Disney parks. This is only making things worse. Iger is slowly turning into the next Eisner. That's all I have to say about that.

I respect your thoughts, but if you can, please make a connection between your thoughts and the lights. I'm lost and need a map.

You sure that area wont be for the toy story land ? I thought starwars was going by echo lake?

Streets of America is awfully close to Echo lake and 14 acres is a very large area. Also it is closer geographically to Star Tours so it makes more sense.

Pixar Street is closer to the backlot tour and Lights, Motors, Action so it makes far more sense to have the 14 acres of Toy Story Land over there.

So yes....I'm pretty sure that won't be for Toy Story Land.

Certainly. The Osborne Lights have been a mainstay for the holidays at Disney's Hollywood Studios ever since the park's infancy. And now, much like many attractions, it's falling victim to the evil art of corporate greed. I mean, look at the facts: The Magic of Disney Animation, Innoventions West, possibly Walt Disney: One Man's Dream and Muppet*Vision 3D, Disney's Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular, and now the Osborne Lights...all closed due to corporate greed!

Seriously, given that Disney plans to use mostly Frozen, Star Wars, Toy Story and Avatar in their recent park expansions, it stands to reason that Iger is turning into the next Eisner because the only thing that seems to be on his mind is MONEY.

I was just about to post exactly that once I had caught up with the posts.
With them unable to hold OL at all in future years something must be destined for the area occupied by SoA.

Correct. Geographically that is the perfect location for Star Wars Land. Streets of America is very close to Star Tours and Tatooine Traders and during the regular season it's pretty useless. All you ever really see are people just milling around back there or hitting up the occasional meet and greet. Last year they had Cinderella's carriage back in front of a theater facade in old New York area. That was about it. That's a nice chunk of 14 acres.

Okay, I can see that for sure. Money is the singularly largest motivator in the world today.

Change does happen, not always for the better. My heart aches for Animation Academy, Muppet Vision 3D and of course, these lights. They all were parts of real life of the company, or of those who made the magic come alive. The redirection of the studios to become just the product side of the company may work out well, but the thought remains that we used to be able to literally step into where magic was made and there was a direct connection to human minds that made it happen, not hiding it all in a fantasy world. We have the MK for that.

ETA: there is a chance that in time Disney will bring back some of what's been lost. A tiny chance, as the innovation behind the originals will be lost or scattered, and the time, knowledge and funds to do so might not exist. Still, a hope exists for the lights if they plan for it to come back some day and pack/prepare it for such.

I have been lucky to have seen the Lights for multiple trips. Our family had a run of New Years trips in the early to mid 2000s, and saw the Lights from Residential Street (complete with holographic angels), move to "the Big City," then start Dancing. We were even there the year MGM did not have any Lights.

The Lights were always a huge Disney Christmas tradition. Hope that they can find a home elsewhere. My family will miss them.

When I 1st heard a rumor about there not being an Osborne lights a few years ago, I suggested building a new 'residential neighborhood' behind the American Adventure at Epcot. This area would be filled with various home facades from different times and locations representing living in the USA. They could include a little general store, sell various items from the home-fronts like jams/jellies, antiques, hand-made items. Just a nice little walk through a typical american neighborhood of old. Maybe like the UK the structures would advance in time period as you walk down the road.
THEN DURING THE HOLIDAYS this would transform into the Osborne Lights of Old as it was on Residential Street at MGM/Disney Studies (as it was known back then).
EPCOT really needs this since the demise of the arch...during the holidays I spend no time at Epcot due to this.

Beyond sad...My family has made Christmas season at WDW a must do. And this light display was a huge part of that. Watching a 5yr olds face at the sheer enormity of this display while listening to the Christmas music was awesome for me as a parent. And finding the Halloween cat among the lights was a great game to play.

Is there a chance of placing this display somewhere else? I can't think of a spot off the top of my head...

I can imagine the cat being hidden in SW Land, or better yet, a SW version of the lights

I'm really sad to see the lights going away. Luckily, we were there last year to see them but still...I hope they can come back in some form in a different portion of the park in the future!

Disney has said the lights will not be relocated to any other location, and the Osborne Family has said that parts of the display are being returned to them.
Thanks. I see. Perhaps the Osborne family will strike up a deal with another theme park. That's a lot of lights!

I'm not sure how much they will actually get back. All of the original lights were replaced by LED, which I assume the family won't be getting back, and Disney will probably scrap them. I would guess the family will get back the structures that were originally in AR. All of the dancing programming and hardware will be Disney owned.

So really, the display is being broken up, and will not be salvageable as a complete show again. Any other park would probably be better off to just create a show from scratch, rather than trying to patch up a rebirth of the Osborne Lights.

Well, if anyone needs Christmas lights next year, start your bidding on Theme park Connections!!
