Orlando transport

My partner and I are staying on International Drive for our 10 night stay. We have a 7 day disney hopper and universal access for the time we are there. My question is, should we get a car? My main concern is getting to Disney and making sure we don't have to leave early to accommodate the bus times. We keep going back and forth as I have read some things saying the buses are great and our hotel has shuttles to Universal and Seaworld. But Disney could be more tricky. As I said we are saying on Interntaional Drive near Pointe Orlando. Car or no car? And any tips on public transport?

Thanks!

For the first five visits to the 'World, we stayed on I-Drive and relied on hotel coaches to travel to WDW and back. SeaWorld and Universal were not a problem as they were on trolly bus stops (Universal is a little walk to the stop), but we had issues with cramped and crowded buses, which circumnavigate all of Orlando/Kissimmie, before finally dropping you off (always the last ones) in I-Drive and in the morning picking up. The coach could take an hour to get to/from WDW. Because they went to other hotels, they were always full, which meant space was not guaranteed, which also meant a l-o-n-g wait in a line, sometimes waiting for two or three busses. They also did not align park hours to bus times, which on one occasion, because we wanted to see the MK fireworks, that cost us a two-hour wait on the tarmac before the bus picked us up and gave us the tedious hour-long circuit before finally dropping us off early hours in the morning (and having to get up again extra early to catch the bus again). If we decided to come away from WDW to catch the bus, we would lose one or two hours of park time.

Then we decided to drive and all our problems went away. We arrive when we like, stay as long as we want, option to leave a go somewhere else, and under no pressure to leave and not miss anything.

I'd absolutely get a car. If you are willing to take a really small, cheap one and shop around a bit, you can usually find really good deals.

Can anyone recommend a good place to rent from? Enterprise are quoting quite a steep price. We don't need anything flashy!

Check out sites like Kayak, Priceline, Expedia etc. They will report prices for multiple car rental locations at once. Car rentals can be a tricky thing, as often you can find discount codes available online that discount the rental a fair bit beyond the prices they show you in searches. Much more so than hotels, who now usually show similar prices. Check with your employer, if they do a lot of business with a particular rental agency they may have a discount code to use, you may get discounts if you belong to BJ's, Sams, Costco, etc, if you are a AAA member, etc. Personally I would stick with one of the better known agencies. The others may be cheaper, but their service is often questionable, and their cars as well.

I agree with using Kayak, etc. Shop around. Sign up for the free clubs all the car agencies have. You'll get millions of emails with specials.

But look around a lot. You'll find a better deal than just entering info on the car agency's site.

I always used Avis because they're conveniently located in the garage, but they are rarely, if ever, the best deal.

I also use Hotwire frequently to check out pricing across all of the companies, both on and off airport. I do find that Dollar does usually have the same rates I can get through Hotwire though. Marie
