Orlando & the Olympics

Given all the places in which the Summer Olympics have been hosted, do you think Orlando is a suitable place to host them?

And if you also add all of the tourist that would be in the parks it would make NYE a 16 day nightmare with early park closings.

Winter would be the best time to hold the Summer Olympics in Orlando. The weather would be ideal.

It would be a nightmare starting about a year before the actual Olympics. I would have nothing to do with the place for a year or so if they were to host.

The ridiculous heat and humidity is the first thing that comes to mind. Second is the almost daily thunder/rain storms during the summer months; they'd need indoor venues for everything. Also, Orlando doesn't quite have the infrastructure to handle that large of an influx of people over a longer period of time. Tampa would be better in regards to the infrastructure, and Miami the best suited for that in Florida. And even with 8-16 years of advance notice, I don't think they could improve it enough. Plus, after its over, a lot of that added infrastructure becomes pointless.

Nope. The lack of infrastructure strikes me as the biggest problem. Any city hosting the Olympics needs to have multiple transit options, which can flexibly move hundreds of thousands of people around town as events change venues. Orlando's only transit options are its roads, which are consistently jam-packed.

I don't think it a good idea for Orlando to have the summer Olympics for an event standpoint because other cities in Florida or out of states would have handle some of the events. I am saying that because the plans that were in place if Chicago was voted for being host for the 2016 Summer Olympic games before Rio de Janeiro,Brazil won the bid.

The plans were for Chicago concerning the 2016 Summer Olympics was Chicago was not going to host all the Summer Olympic events. Chicago actually is not capable of handling all Summer Olympic games like Orlando isn't capable of doing either despite the fact Chicago is a much larger city.

That meant multiple states were needed to spend money for the 2016 summer Olympics including Wisconsin besides Illinois . Some of the events would be taking place in Wisconsin or Minnesota with light rail being used as transportation for the Olympic athletes. There was no light rail built or read at the time of the 2016 summer Olympic bid besides the amount of states that had spend money for events and training for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Orlando would have the same problems as I mentioned for Chicago. It is easy to see why the International Olympic Committee didn't pick Chicago for winning the bid for 2016 summer Olympic games.

Tampa bid for the 2012 summer games back when. The bid did include venues in Tampa and Orlando. Unfortunately we dis not get it. I think it would have been fun. I don't know the exact reason, but I would assume lack of transportation was the biggest reason. I also think that a lot of venues and hotels would have been built that would eventually sit empty after the games. Traffic is already bad and would have been a nightmare during the games. We have done a great job hosting Superbowl, and we will see how we handle the RNC. I thing Olympics is just too much for a small city with a huge lack of big city infrastructure.

Atlanta hosted the games. Plenty of heat and humidity and MARTA is not much.

Seriously, Athens, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Sydney all have hosted the summer games. 2016 is in Brazil. I don't think the weather in Orlando would be a factor.

I don't think the weather is an issue at all. It's been done hotter places. Traffic shoulnt be much of a problem. It's been done in more congested places.

I don't know if we have all the stuff you need.

I find it somewhat surprising that the issue of weather, particularly in regard to the levels of heat and humidity, has been defended by several posters on this thread. I have spent years reading the complaints of people on this forum concerning the Summer heat. I have always thought that the heat was not the suppressive deal breaker in planning a trip to WDW that many have claimed it to be, yet many others have consistently claimed that Summer is not the proper time to visit the Orlando/Kissimmee/Lake Buena Vista area. So...I guess athletes are better suited to endure the heat, as opposed to us wimpy tourists?

I went to the games in Atlanta in 96. You need a lot of large stadiums and a good infrastructure. We were able to take mass transport everywhere we needed to go. Would Orlando have that capability? On a side note, the Olympics are usually a money loser for the host cities.

No one said it wasn't hot or humid. My post pointed out the fact that other cities in just as miserable conditions as Orlando have been selected. Therefore I do not believe that the IOC is checking the thermostat at WDW when they choose a site to host the games.

The Olympians are better suited to deal with heat than the typical touist. They are young and in top physical condition.

But that isn't the point. The point is that Orlando isn't precluded based on temps. It's been done in places just as hot.

No one said that you said that it wasn’t hot or humid. No one even hinted at it. The issue was the level of heat and humidity, and how it would affect the athletes. Obviously, I don’t know what I am talking about when it comes to athletes and their environments, but I’m OK with that.
