Study: Orlando most dangerous spring break city

The home of the Magic Kingdom, destination of Super Bowl stars and families everywhere, is no place for college kids on spring break, according to a new study.

Orlando was ranked as the nation's most dangerous spring break destination, followed by Daytona Beach and Las Vegas, the study claims.
The analysis by Avvo, a legal and medical website, considered a number of statistics in ranking 25 spring break destinations:

Murders, rapes, other violent crimes, fatal car crashes and Avvo's data, including doctors and lawyers per capita, doctor rankings and criminal defense issues.

Rounding out the top 10 were Myrtle Beach, West Palm Beach, South Padre Island, New Orleans, Panama City, Jacksonville and Miami.

"Spring break is a time for fun, but you have to be careful," Avvo founder Mark Britton said. "Avvo's mission is to help people make informed decisions, and where you go for spring break is an important one."

The safest of the destinations ranked was Honolulu, followed by Santa Barbara, Calif.

I heard about that yesterday I was really surprised by that. I wish they got more into detail. It is not something that you really hear.

Well of course Honolulu is safe for spring break. How many college kids can afford to go there? :hammer:

Also I wonder if they are talking about metro Orlando (which isn't that great) or the Central Florida region that encompasses WDW?

There's danger in any city you go to, especially when you put a group of young college kids looking for a wild time together. Silly studies. :)

These studies almost always include the entire central Florida region. The last study I saw on crime (where Orlando fared poorly) drew on statistics that covered an area from Deland to Lakeland. That's about like saying the entire area from Philadelphia to Washington DC is Baltimore. :brick:

I think I would take my chances in Orlando, vs Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. I wonder if the author works for the Mexican Chamber of Commerce.

The small part of "Orlando" most of us experience seems safe enough to me. Just stay seated and keep your arms inside the vehicle at all times.

So they are including ratings for doctors and lawyers? If you have good ratings for doctors and lawyers, does that make your city safer?

Are more lawyers and doctors per capita supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing? If safety and health problems increase the demand for lawyers and doctors, then it could be a bad thing.

As someone who has lived in Orlando my whole life, I can attest that these studies are entirely misleading. Central Florida is so incredibly vast, and the vast majority of these crimes are happening in very particular areas and neighborhoods. So basically, unless you are looking for trouble, you have no reason to be concerned. Use basic common sense. Don't walk around I-Drive late at night, lock your doors, and be mindful of your surroundings. Just like other recent news reports, the media is sensationalizing. It would be boring to say Las Vegas is the most dangerous spring break destination. But the home of Mickey Mouse? That will get people to read....
