One Sentence Competition - Season 3 Episode 2

spacemt354

Chili's
As an aside, does everyone like the theme of this episode and how we have challenges based on building ideas from past prompt's winners? Or does that make it boring?

PS - I think I need to find a way to organize the "official park description" better, it is becoming a huge wall of text and is only going to get worse...
From hosting this contest before, this approach definitely has it's pros and cons.

Pros being that it has never been done before and is a very original way of doing this game! Each round builds off the last. The downside to that may be limiting the opportunities for projects and the accessibility of new players because if Portals of Adventure doesn't appeal to players for whatever reason, then it might perturb them from throwing in an idea if they aren't comfortable with the premise or haven't been following along.

If you continue doing the Portals of Adventure theme, I think a way to eliminate the wall of text in the prompt post is to have a "prologue" post chronicling the project. Then have the challenge post be separate, so the reader doesn't have to search for what the challenge is within the wall of text.

You're doing a great job as a first time host, by the way. And it's a unique spin on the One Sentence Comp. Just keep in mind that the goal of this small comp is to have easy and quick responses to prompts -- like an "elevator pitch", so that it doesn't take up a lot of time! :bookworm:

SKYLANDIA
The floating island fortress of Skylandia (presently moored to the Earth) is the sister city to Mythica, supplier of Tesla's Flight's airborne marvels, and a wondrous boutique resort experience which immerses guests in a comforting world of steampunk fantasy.

Guests enjoy staterooms appointed with Cote D'Azur luxury, swim in an infinite pool overlooking Portals of Adventure, shop in 19th century arcades, and dine in a posh airship whose window screens depict an enchanting flight.

Dirigibles (simulator trams like Hogwarts Express) ferry resort guests to Mythica's secret entrance, where guests' Skylandia Magic Bands grant them exclusive "living theater" interactions with Mythica's citizens (cast member performers), front row spectacular seating, and access to Mythica's hidden chambers and mysteries.

(BONUS) For the logo, picture interlocking steampunk gears which resemble Mickey Mouse - the Gear Ears!

THE NEW HOTEL HIGHTOWER
1000

DAY ONE: Guests are escorted to their rooms by student volunteers and S.E.A. staff, all of whom have worked together to refurbish (and remove the demons from) the hotel, and present the first round of guests to a large party at night, where the ghosts reclaim the hotels.

DAY TWO: S.E.A. agents lead guests on many adventures like: throughout the tunnel system under the resort and into the park, into Hightower's penthouse where guests can look at artifacts before skydiving down, on ghost hunting missions throughout the third floor, or to the hotels pool which now seems to be inside another lavish dimension.

DAY THREE: Guests enter the final battle by entering Hightop's personal elevator, before checking out on the last day.

These are GREAT ideas and I think you for your comments. I am definitely going to separate out the "prologue" now, and try to find a way to keep the theme without accidentally excluding people that haven't submitted anything yet.

Disney Towers
boston-university-student-village-2-dorms.jpg
Themed to the Disney Quad section of the park which features university themed designs, this boutique resort will be themed to a college dormitory. The slick design of the 24-story dormitory will be equipped with updated amenities and cleanliness that presents the guests with a 2-night all encompassing stay, with a buffet dining hall, gym, laundry room, swimming pool, and lounge areas throughout the dorm. On the top floor, guests can take the elevator up to the "study lounge" which features a late night-cafe and sprawling view of the entire Portals of Adventure park.

Bonus
For the park logo -- imagine the title (Portals of Adventure) written in old-Latin letter format (similar to university writing) with an image of the park's icon centered and behind the title.

Disney University: Partners Degree at the Disney University Quad

Guests can stay at Disney University "dorms", where they will recieve a class schedule, and be sent off through a number of seminars and activities for all guests. On day 2, guests will take a "field trip" to the Mystic Gallery, where an exclusive opening show will be held involving resort guests, before a day of admission is granted. Finally, should guests complete all tasks, they will receive an honorary Partners Degree at a special ceremony (which secretly doubles as checkout).

Hotel Porhe
angahuan1.jpg

Hotel Porhe is the premiere hotel and starting point for venturing up to Parícutin which is home to Volcano Adventures in the Exploritorium. Guest arriving for the boutique experience will be met by a trail guide who not only assists guests with the room accommodations but will also give clues (treasure hunt) about how to find their "gear" for their upcoming excursion to Volcano Adventures. During the three day experience guests will: meet "locals" who will either warn them away from the mountain lest they incur the fire gods' wrath or entertain them with legends at the nightly bonfire, search through hidden shrines and "forbidden" areas to discover the myths of the volcano, and gather for a singular dining experience where the fire gods appear as a final warning before guests end their VIP experience by venturing to Volcano Adventures for an after hour ride and party.

Bonus: The name of the hotel will be in cracked font and at night the cracks will glow red as if the magma is trying to break through.

The Critiques

WDW Management has had some time to look over the resort proposals and has decided to provide some initial feedback before the selections are made:

@D Hindley - Skylandia

We love the tie in to Mythica and Tesla, and boy does that image get our imaginations going. Your description of the amenities all sound amazing and right in theme with the rest of the resort. We also love the dirigibles idea, and the fact that there will be secret chambers and mysteries to explore and experience only for guests of Mythica. Overall this is a great great idea.

We wish we knew more about how this would look against the rest of the park. Is it situated in a way that is going to make park guests angry that they are not allowed to visit it even though it seems like it is a part of the park? And how are these secret chambers hidden in Mythica also to not make non-staying guests jealous?

@kmbmw777 - The New Hotel Hightower

We love how you've taken the 3-day concept of the Star Wars resort and re-purposed it and themed it towards this haunted Hightower hotel concept. Your description of this story-line works so well and we can see how guests would be involved throughout their stay. We especially like that something is planned for Day 3 as that last day/morning can be rather lame when all you have to look forward to is a breakfast and then a trip to the airport.

The only thing we would be worries about is how scary the resort would be, and if children would be okay being around haunted theming 100% of the time when they are at the resort.

@spacemt354 - Disney Towers

We like the idea of this one, and we like how you've themed it to the Disney University Quad. The amenities sound nice, and we really like the rooftop cafe concept.

We think the big critique on this one is that it sounds just like a great new resort concept for WDW, but not really in the vein of the new "type" of resort that the Star Wars resort is going to be. Where is the story-line, where is the special interactive experiences, etc?

@Magic Feather - Disney University: Partners Degree at the Disney University Quad

Another dorm idea! We think this idea is great and we love how you've included a story-line to take the guests through their three day stay. We like how there is a class schedule and love the creative ways that something like that could be used across both the resort and the park. We also like the closing ceremony to give guests something to do on that last day before they depart.

One question we had is where would this be located? Is it in the park itself, or is it just outside of the park, or is it completely separate? Also, what kind of theming does the resort have to make it actually seem like a nice place to stay (and less like a dorm!)?

@FigmentPigments - Hotel Porhe

Another very great and creative idea! We love using a single attraction as the idea behind one of these resorts, as it really allows you to elaborate and expand on a lot of detail specific to the attraction itself, possible even incorporating easter eggs into the ride that only guests of the resort will understand. And having a treasure hunt around the resort and possibly the park is never a bad thing to incorporate.

Our only critique on this one is that the night-time bonfire (and possibly the resort on the whole) seems like it may lie a little too close to the Polynesian look-and-feel.

The Selections

WDW Management is proud to announce its selection for the designer of the new boutique resort related to Disney's Portals of Adventure! A ton of great submissions on this one and we are glad everyone is still interested in this competition!

The Bonus Winner

@D Hindley & @Magic Feather

Magic Feather submitted the only actual picture for the new logo, and it was a good concept! But we are going to break the rules a bit here and also give a bonus win to D Hindley as we just love the concept they put out there.

The Journey So Far...

This space will be used to update our running description of Disney's Portals of Adventure. The prompts themselves will now include a very brief summary of what you read here, and the prompts will also only include descriptions relevant to the challenge at hand. The idea is that these Prologue posts are FYI, and are not actually needed to understand the challenges.

-Disney's Portals of Adventure-

Disney Parks in the past have had double uses: the Magic Kingdom was an amusement park doubling as a theme park; EPCOT is a World's Fair doubling as a theme park; Hollywood Studios is a studio lot doubling as a theme park; Animal Kingdom is a zoo doubling as a theme park. Disney's fifth gate also fits this criteria: Disney's Portals of Adventure is a museum doubling as a theme park. When a guests walk through the park, they see works that would be traditionally represented in a museum such as art, nature, or scientific description, before arriving in one of many completely immersive worlds, and an amazing boutique resort!

The Lands

The Disney University (DU) Quad
This land represents the entrance of the park (much like Main Street in the Magic Kingdom). The large walking lane will be luscious green turf and surrounding the lane will be multiple university-themed buildings (possible examples: Music Building, Engineering Building, Bus Depot).

The Mystic Gallery
This is the "hub" of Disney's Portals of Adventure and can be found at the rear of the DU Quad. From the outside it looks like a standard University museum building, except at the entrance to the land is Henry Mystic's enchanted music box, which brings all the gallery's artworks to vivid life and is able to interact with guests who wield magical (RFID chip) paintbrushes a-la Epic Mickey

In addition to being a hub for the park, this land hosts the fine art collections of S.E.A.'s famed curator Lord Henry Mystic, displayed in a lushly manicured sculpture garden and in a converted spacious Beaux-Artes railway station (akin to Paris's Musee d'Orsay). Golden frames in this land are portals to the wondrous worlds of famous paintings from throughout history, rendered in life-size brushwork styles including romanticism or pointillism or cubism. Stepping "through" the portals leads to various other lands and attractions.

Attraction - Goghing Through the Cosmos: A giant mural covering one wall within the Mystic Gallery depicts Vincent Van Gogh's famous "Starry Night", altered slightly to contain a golden portal on the bottom its left side, leading to the forest which surrounds the town shown in the painting. Guests venture through the golden frame, into the nighttime forest (housed within a show building), following an overgrown dirt trail through moss covered trees and an eerie fog, until they reach the archaeological dig site where one of Mystic's most prized possessions, the Nebra Sky Disc, was found. Here, guests board a Star Tours style Motion simulator where a mischievous tour guide convinces guests to help him retrieve what he believes to be the back half of the famous disk. However, as soon as this second mysterious disc is moved, a bright light emanates from the ground and guests are sucked through a portal into a journey across the cosmos, where they take in stunning galactic vistas, explore foreign worlds, and race to make it back home before the sun rises, the Starry Night ends, and the portal closes.

Mythica
This is a steampunk inspired land full of gears and buzzing machinery. It is located below The Mystic Gallery and contributes to the parks overarching story that Mythica is a mysterious and mystical city that powers the portals to adventure located in The Mystic Gallery.

Attraction - Tesla's Flight: Guests board blimps (which use technology similar to that of Peter Pan's flight) that hold 24 people and one guide. The ride primarily showcases breathtaking scenes of Mythica, while our guide describes scenes as "the simple oh market square," "the coliseum royale," or "the golden capital."

The Exploratorium
This land focuses on the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Guests will be able to trek down into caves to view wondrous animals and plants while traveling through the underground passages to reach various attractions themed towards the seven natural wonders (the Aurora Borealis, the Harbor of Rio de Janeiro, the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, Mount Everest, Paricutin, Victoria Falls).

Attraction - Volcano Adventures: From the Exploratorium's caverns, guests emerge into the magma-encrusted ruins of a Mexican village at the base of the volcanic wonder Paricutin. Aboard scientific research Jeeps (EMV vehicles), guests descend into the Earth while another volcano swiftly emerges, just as Paricutin did in 1943. In a tremendous finale, Aztec fire gods launch guests (via elevator platform) up the erupting volcano's main shaft, for a thrill ride that combines the best of Indiana Jones Adventure, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Tower of Terror!

Attraction - Niagara Falls River Expedition: Journey through the Canadian and North American Wilderness teeming with wildlife as you trek down the "8th" Wonder of the World... Niagara Falls. On this high capacity (3,200 guests per hour) raft attraction, you will see several animatronics of animals that inhabit the natural forests of North America, such as bears, foxes, and more, before plummeting down the falls. The drop is 65 feet at a 42 degree angle, reaching speeds of 40 mph; guests must be at least 40 inches tall to ride.

The Resort

Skylandia
The floating island fortress of Skylandia
(presently moored to the Earth) is the sister city to Mythica, supplier of Tesla's Flight's airborne marvels, and a wondrous boutique resort experience which immerses guests in a comforting world of steampunk fantasy. Prompt 5

Q Queue Cue?

x7ej4qr.png

-The Prologue-

Construction on WDW's new 5th gate, Disney's Portals of Adventure, has begun. The attractions from the park that have been revealed so far are:

Tesla's Flight: Guests board blimps that hold 24 people and one guide. The ride primarily showcases breathtaking scenes flying above a steampunk city.

Volcano Adventures: Aboard scientific research Jeeps (EMV vehicles), guests descend into the Earth. In a tremendous finale, Aztec fire gods launch guests (via elevator platform) up the erupting volcano's main shaft.

Niagara Falls River Expedition: On this high capacity (3,200 guests per hour) raft attraction, you will see several animatronics of animals that inhabit the natural forests of North America, before plummeting down the falls.

(Goghing Through the Cosmos will not be used for this challenge)

-Scenario-

When Disney's Portals of Adventure opens its gates for the first time, and probably for many months (if not years) afterwards, it is going to have a very crowded atmosphere. There will be people everywhere, long lines, tough-to-get reservations, and impossible to reserve fast passes. WDW Management is looking to improve the guest experience in new and exciting ways in relation to one of these big issues.

ed2bf5da8d72559a1881fa9dedfed8ce.jpg

-Challenge-

WDW Management wants the experience of waiting in a queue to be just as magical, intriguing, and creative as the attraction itself. Armchair Imagineers, your challenge is to describe an amazing and truly magical queue for one of the three rides listed in the prologue section above.

-Bonus-

Between Mythica and the Exploratorium, we only have two (non-hub and non-entranceway) lands in Disney's Portals of Adventure. WDW Management feels like we need a third to round out the park. Use one sentence to name and describe the third main land for the park.

-Rules-

You may use between 1 and 3 sentences and up to 1 picture (plus one extra sentence for the bonus if you choose to participate). The deadline is Tuesday (5/2) at midnight.

-Tips-

K.I.S.S - Keep it simple, silly. Try not to over complicate or over think things too much. It's a simple, casual competition. Focus on the big picture. Don't miss the forest for the trees. All that good stuff.

-Judging Criteria-

Is it creative?
Is it (generally) realistic?
Does it fit thematically/visually?

Good Luck everyone! Have fun! Go create!?

Thanks for continuing to tag me on this. Lots of cool ideas from what I've been able to catch up on.

Tesla's Flight Queue
Before boarding their blimp, guests will enter the show building that resembles a working hangar filled with blimp parts, crates, interactive levers for machinery and other elements like "steam", etc. In lieu of standard cast uniforms, cast members will be dressed in a myriad of garb ranging from blimp captain to machinists, and will periodically be roaming about the working hangar, inspecting, moving items, and talking to the passengers. The final leg of the queue will take guests on a walk through of a life size blimp cab to see the inner workings and layout before boarding their ride vehicle.

Molten Laboratories (Queue for Volcano Adventure)
after_reset_rpg_illustration_underground_lab_by_blackcloudstudios-d77pm7o.png

In this queue, guests do not wait in any line - rather they scan their Magicbands at the entryway, and when the time for their ride comes, they will receive an alert on their smartphone (via My Disney Experience) or flip phone (via text).

While waiting for their turn, guests can explore the laboratory, ask "scientists" about the projects going on, read nonfiction works about science and technology in the library, play a game of Lazer-tag in the Shooting range, and play in a (realistic) bouncy obstacle course in the Simulation Room.

When summoned, guests have seven minutes to report to the ride queue, where they will wait in a relatively short line to board their EMV; however, this line is still well themed, but more cave-y than the laboratory.

(BONUS)
Guests can enter the world of Nova Prime from Guardians of the Galaxy by museum the libraries plantarium portal, which features a flat ride and intense coaster.

QUEUE - NIAGARA FALLS RIVER EXPEDITION

We start in a cave, as with every Exploratorium attraction, which leads to a beautiful and lush fern grotto carved out by erosion behind the pounding falls.

From a rocky opening, wooden catwalks lead outside over spillways to a ferry boat, The Misty Maiden, moored at the base of the mighty cataracts.

Decks provide visitors with stupendous vistas of the waterfalls, the rafts, even an ominous shipwreck, plus many museum-quality interactive exhibits with information on Niagara's natural and human history.

(BONUS) Realm of the Weird resurrects Rolly Crump's famous museum concept as a land, a strange valley of unnatural phenomena and roadside curio museums that would make Ripley or Madame Tussaud proud.

Niagara Falls River Expedition Queue

In the spirit of the Exploratorium, guests will travel (from the Canadian side) through a small scale replica of Queen Victoria Park, filled with flowers, butterflies, and interactive trivia kiosks before crossing another small scale replica of the Rainbow Bridge from where guests can push buttons to stem the flow of the river to create different rainbow combinations.

From there, guests travel through the Cave of Winds to meet the highly advanced AA "Queen of Peace" named “Jikonsaseh” of the Neutral Native Americans as she retells the tales of the Maid in the Mist and Defeating the River Serpent.

As the stories are told, the cave walls light up with animated images overhead and all around the guests, bringing the stories to life before guests continue their journey toward for one last spectacular view behind the falls, and finally board their boats to undertake the Falls themselves.

Bonus: Much of this park is dedicated to real world adventures, but this new land, Dreamscape, takes guests on an adventure of the mind where Dreamfinder is not just a ride but an environment dedicated to imagination, where Captain Eo invites guests to become members of his Corp dedicated to the gift of music, and where Dream Seekers offer the chance to live and create your own adventurers.
