The Critiques

WDW Management has had some time to look over the proposals for the new lands in Disney's Portals of Adventure and has decided to provide some initial feedback before the selections are made:

@spacemt354 - The Renaissance

The idea for this land fits very well into the overarching theme of "museum". From your picture and descriptions, we get a very artistic vibe to this land, which we think could work and would also be a little different from the types of areas that Disney traditionally themes. The attraction also sounds like fun and reminds us a little bit of The Da Vinci Code.

Our biggest critique though on this one is in the creativity bucket. When a guest thinks of "museum", one of the first things in their mind is probably the art of Michelangelo and Da Vinci. It might be just a little too predictable.

@D Hindley - Mystic Gallery

Now this is a great idea. You've taken some of Disney's coveted backstory with S.E.A. and incorporated it seamlessly into a section of the park that is right at home within the "museum" theme of portals of adventure. The subtle tie to Epic Mickey is great and is also a great use of technology. And we're not sure if you were using "portals" figuratively, but we could see the attractions in this land each having an entrance "through" one of these golden framed "portals".

We don't have very much to critique here other than maybe a small lack of a general idea of what the attractions may entail...

@gonzoWDW - Daedaland - An Aeronautical Adventure

We like everything about this one. The theme of "flight" and the description of the attractions are excellent. We especially like the Jules Verne idea.

However, we wish more time was spent on describing the general theme/layout/description of the land instead of spending time describing the specific attractions. Because of this, we have a great idea of what the rides will entail, but not the best idea of what it will be like just walking around this area.

@kmbmw777 - University Quad

Now this is quite the unique idea. You've blended your theme with the "museum" theme without causing any type of conflict. And your picture really helps set up how this would look. We love this idea and it really keeps with the standard layout of how WDW parks are set up.

Our only critique is that like some others, we wish you would have spent a little more time on the general description and feel instead of describing the specific attractions, but in this instance we think they help to tie everything together since you relate them to "quad"-type buildings.

@Pionmycake - The Surreal Reality

This idea is the beginnings of something really special. Optical illusions and surrealism really set the stage for some very intriguing attractions and theming ideas. The creativity that could be established in this land would really be out of the ballpark.

The only critique we had is that the creativity in this one is pretty vague and leaves most everything up to us to figure out some specific examples. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it may depend on the interpreters (WDW Management) creativity to get a good idea instead of the creators (Pionmycake).

@Magic Feather - Digital Realm

The idea on this one starts out great. Looking at the digital and technological space is ripe for creativity and education in a "museum"-type setting. And then adding in a TRON attraction helps tie it right to Disney IP.

But then as we read further it almost seems like the idea is hinging completely on TRON, instead of having TRON just be a single attraction or subtle theme in one area of this land. We think this area would be served best by focusing on the digital side of things and only including a subtle reference to TRON (or a single attraction).

@FigmentPigments - Explore

This is another great idea. Focusing this area on the 7 Natural Wonders gives us a defined goal to hit and provides many many ways in which attractions could be developed. It also (roughly) fits in with the theme of a museum as we could see an exhibit showcasing and describing these wonders in a natural history museum.

The critique on this one would have to do with the size of the land that would be needed to accommodate seven separate attractions at complexity that you describe. It seems like it may get large, and you could almost build an entire park out of this one concept.

The Selections

WDW Management is proud to announce its selections for the designers of the lands within Disney's Portals of Adventure.

The Bonus Winner

@Magic Feather - Mythica

You took the entrance to the park in a creative direction and we love that. Also, what is not to love about steampunk? It may not fit the theme of "museum" perfectly, but it is close enough and creative enough that we loved it.

The Bronze Medal

bronze_medal.png

@FigmentPigments - Explore

A great idea that is ripe for expansion. We can see this going in so many different ways, it is very inspiring. We think the future challenge would be how to incorporate all of the Natural Wonders without having this land balloon in size.

The Silver Medal

@kmbmw777 - University Quad

This idea was almost perfect. A ton we love about this one, and what a stage it sets for the rest of the park.

The Gold Medal

@D Hindley - Mystic Gallery

The incorporation of S.E.A and the alignment to the "museum" theme really put this one over the top.

We hope everyone stays tuned, as in a few hours or more the next challenge will appear...

Prompt 3

Portals of Creativity

portals1HDfree.jpg

-Disney's Portals of Adventure-

Disney Parks in the past have had double uses: the Magic Kingdom was an amusement park doubling as a theme park; EPCOT is a World's Fair doubling as a theme park; Hollywood Studios is a studio lot doubling as a theme park; Animal Kingdom is a zoo doubling as a theme park. Disney's fifth gate also fits this criteria: Disney's Portals of Adventure is a museum doubling as a theme park. When a guests walk through the park, they see works that would be traditionally represented in a museum such as art, nature, or scientific description, before arriving in one of many completely immersive worlds.

The Disney University (DU) Quad
This land represents the entrance of the park (much like Main Street in the Magic Kingdom). The large walking lane will be luscious green turf and surrounding the lane will be multiple university-themed buildings (possible examples: Music Building, Engineering Building, Bus Depot).

Mythica
This is the "hub" of Disney's Portals of Adventure and can be found at the rear of the DU Quad. It is a steampunk inspired mini-land full of gears and buzzing machinery that "makes the portals run" throughout the rest of the park.

The Mystic Gallery
This land hosts the fine art collections of S.E.A.'s famed curator Lord Henry Mystic, displayed in a lushly manicured sculpture garden and in a converted spacious Beaux-Artes railway station (akin to Paris's Musee d'Orsay). Displayed at the entrance to the land is Mystic's enchanted music box, which brings all the gallery's artworks to vivid life and is able to interact with guests who wield magical (RFID chip) paintbrushes a-la Epic Mickey. Golden frames in this land are portals to the wondrous worlds of famous paintings from throughout history, rendered in life-size brushwork styles including romanticism or pointillism or cubism. Stepping "through" the portals leads to various attractions.

The Exploratorium
This land focuses on the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Guests will be able to trek down into caves to view wondrous animals and plants while traveling through the underground passages to reach various attractions themed towards the seven natural wonders (the Aurora Borealis, the Harbor of Rio de Janeiro, the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, Mount Everest, Paricutin, Victoria Falls).

-Scenario-

As seen above, WDW Management has selected the initial areas (or "lands") that we will focus on as a part of the opening of Disney's Portals of Adventure. However, like before, they have rejected all initially proposed attraction ideas. With the groundwork and the theme of the park now decided upon, management thinks it is ripe time to get some attraction ideas under our belts.

disney-set-to-open-new-california-adventure-theme-park.jpg

-Challenge-

Armchair Imagineers, your challenge is to name and describe a single new attraction within one of the 4 named lands above at Disney's Portals of Adventure! But there is a catch. You may not base your attraction on any of the attractions originally proposed for that land, as they have all been rejected by WDW Management. Also, you may not build an attraction in a land if you were the creator of that land.

-Bonus-

Although the general theme of Disney's Portals of Adventure is "museums", and the theme of the "HUB" is Mythica (steampunk), WDW Management has not decided on a final design for the building (or open space) which houses the Mythica "HUB". In one sentence, describe what the Mythica "HUB" building or open space looks like from the outside looking in.

-Rules-

You may use between 1 and 3 sentences and up to 1 picture (plus one extra sentence for the bonus if you choose to participate). The deadline is Sunday (4/23) at midnight.

You can only create one attraction as a part of your entry. Your attraction must be created for and fit thematically within your chosen land inside Disney's Portals of Adventure park. And you must abide by the restrictions mentioned in the challenge above.

-Tips-

K.I.S.S - Keep it simple, silly. Try not to over complicate or over think things too much. It's a simple, casual competition. Focus on the big picture. Don't miss the forest for the trees. All that good stuff.

-Judging Criteria-

Is it creative?
Is it (generally) realistic?
Does it fit thematically/visually?

Good Luck everyone! Have fun! Go create!?

VOLCANO ADVENTURES
From the Exploratorium's caverns, guests emerge into the magma-encrusted ruins of a Mexican village at the base of the volcanic wonder Paricutin.

Aboard scientific research Jeeps (EMV vehicles), guests descend into the Earth while another volcano swiftly emerges, just as Paricutin did in 1943.

In a tremendous finale, Aztec fire gods launch guests (via elevator platform) up the erupting volcano's main shaft, for a thrill ride that combines the best of Indiana Jones Adventure, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Tower of Terror!

(BONUS) Mythica is found within The Clockwork Citadel, a fanciful collegiate clock tower at the end of University Quad.

Tesla's Flight
tyler-edlin-steampunk-concept-by-tyleredlinart-d7czbvr.jpg

Mythica is actually located beneath the Mystic Gallery (now serving the as the hub of the park) which contributes to the new overarching story that Mythica is a mystical city that powers the portals to adventure located in the Mystic Gallery (which is actually a museum in Disney University). (BONUS)

In Mystica, there will be a D-Ticket called "Tesla's Flight," in which guests board blimps (which use technology similar to that of Peter Pan's flight) that hold 24 people and one guide.

The ride primarily showcases breathtaking scenes of Mythica, while our guide describes the scenes as "the simple oh market square," "the coliseum royale," or "the golden capital."

Niagara Falls River Expedition - The Exploratorium
banner-niagara1.jpg

Journey through the Canadian and North American Wilderness teeming with wildlife as you trek down the "8th" Wonder of the World... Niagara Falls. On this high capacity (3,200 guests per hour) raft attraction, you will see several animatronics of animals that inhabit the natural forests of North America, such as bears, foxes, and more, before plummeting down the falls. The drop is 65 feet at a 42 degree angle, reaching speeds of 40 mph; guests must be at least 40 inches tall to ride.

Bonus: The Library of Alexandria will act as the hub of the park, however designed in steampunk form to blend in with the surrounding Mythica environment, but also to allude to and transition to the "wonders" land - being one of the ancient wonders of the world.

Goghing through the Cosmos

A giant mural covering one wall within the Mystic Gallery depicts Vincent Van Gogh's famous "Starry Night", altered slightly to contain a golden portal on the bottom its left side, leading to the forest which surrounds the town shown in the painting.

Guests venture through the golden frame, into the nighttime forest (housed within a show building), following an overgrown dirt trail through moss covered trees and an eerie fog, until they reach the archaeological dig site where one of Mystic's most prized possessions, the Nebra Sky Disc, was found.
220px-1600_Himmelsscheibe_von_Nebra_sky_disk_anagoria.jpg

Here, guests board a Star Tours style Motion simulator where a mischievous tour guide convinces guests to help him retrieve what he believes to be the back half of the famous disk; however, as soon as this second mysterious disc is moved, a bright light emanates from the ground and guests are sucked through a portal into a journey across the cosmos, where they take in stunning galactic vistas, explore foreign worlds, and race to make it back home before the sun rises, the Starry Night ends, and the portal closes.

Bonus: In addition to containing numerous gauges, giant steam tanks, and miles of bronze covered pipes traversing the locale, the circular Mythica hub has massive glass-encased crystals - which power the park's famous portals - at the entrance of each land.

The Critiques

WDW Management has had some time to look over the ride proposals for the new attractions in Disney's Portals of Adventure and has decided to provide some initial feedback before the selections are made:

@D Hindley - Volcano Adventures (The Exploratorium)

This proposal fits right into the Exploratorium. There are ripe theming possibilities too with the ability to take advantage of that Mexican village at the base of the volcano/attraction. The ride concept is also very intriguing, as you get a kind of combination of some of Disney's most thrilling rides. We love the idea of getting a kind of reverse Tower of Terror at the end too, which melds right in to the whole volcano theme. A great job on this.

Although we praised it above, I think my only concern on this one is the Mexican village. This attraction needs to fit within The Exploratorium, and from a size perspective your description almost makes it sound like this area would be its own land.

@kmbmw777 - Tesla's Flight (Mythica)

This proposal really gets the imagination going. It sounds like almost a combination between the Universe of Energy and Peter Pan's Flight, except set in the steampunk world of Mythica. Within the concept of Disney's Portals of Adventure, I'm not sure how you could get much more of a great-sounding ride then this.

Maybe the picture is throwing us off, but I think the only critique on this one is how you could build the sets for this ride without them being enormous. And although it is not a part of the judging, if we look at your bonus and think about the fact that it would be underground too, it seems like quite a feat of engineering would be needed to get this constructed.

@spacemt354 - Niagara Falls River Expedition (The Exploratorium)

This is a great base proposal for a new attraction. We love that instead of focusing primarily on the falls, a lot of attention is spent on the forest and the animals. We think this could add a lot of heart to this ride, as well as make it compelling for those that love the great outdoors.

The only critique on this one seems to be a recurring one in this round... with The Exploratorium already needing 7 attractions, we're not sure that adding an 8th is the best place to start.

@gonzoWDW - Goghing through the Cosmos (The Mystic Gallery)

We love the ideas on this one. The first thing that came to our minds was the queue from ET at Universal Studios Orlando. Not only that but this seamlessly blend right in inside the Mystic Gallery. The simulator sounds fantastic also, and we would love to see how some of his other painting's would be used within that attraction.

We just wish that there were a few more details about the ride itself, and what the overall theme or story of the ride is about.

The Selections

WDW Management is proud to announce its selections for the designers of the new attractions within Disney's Portals of Adventure. Management was so overjoyed with the proposals that ALL attractions submitted will become a part of Portal's of Adventure regardless of their ranking. That's how great a job everyone did this round.

The Bonus Winner

@kmbmw777 - Hub Switch

By swapping Mythica with The Mystic Gallery you have solved a major layout issue with the park. It also makes sense that the portals within The Mystic Gallery lead to other lands as well as attractions! And this solves the issues of needing a building / theme for the hub, as it now really brings home the original idea of a museum.

The Bronze Medal

As an aside, does everyone like the theme of this episode and how we have challenges based on building ideas from past prompt's winners? Or does that make it boring?

PS - I think I need to find a way to organize the "official park description" better, it is becoming a huge wall of text and is only going to get worse...
