It is almost time for One Little Spark 3 to begin!

To help everyone get warmed up and excited, I'm gonna post some prompts from OLS 1 and 2 here! I'd love to hear what ideas ya'll have!

--The Set Up--

Obviously, a competition themed to Dreamfinder and Figment, a round based in the Imagination Pavilion was inevitable. Though, there was a period of time where neither Dreamfinder nor Figment was able to be found in their home under the glass pyramids.

Journey into YOUR Imagination did away with the character of Dreamfinder entirely and only featured Figment in small cameos. It was a dark time in Disney history. Perhaps we can make that dark time a little brighter with just one little spark of light.

350

Kodak, who was the sponsor of the attraction at the time, wanted the pavilion as a whole to be hipper and cooler. This started five years earlier with the replacement of Captain EO with Honey, I Shrunk the Audience in November of 1994.

The biggest change that came from Kodak's desires was the complete redo of Journey into Imagination. The ride was shortened, but was mostly the same track. Everything else was changed. Including the removal of Dreamfinder and Figment. The rides new story was made to tie into Honey, I Shrunk the Audience and turned the Imagination Pavilion into the Imagination Institute. All with a rather low budget.

The new version of the ride, Journey into YOUR Imagination, was so hated that it was closed down on October 8th, 2001 (Meaning it still stayed open over twice as long as Superstar Limo did).

Disney realized that the removal of Figment and the new version of the ride was a mistake. A new new version of the attraction was then built as quickly and as cheaply as they could and that new new version is the one that currently stands.

Journey into YOUR Imagination was a disaster. It revealed the biggest problem with the sponsorship system EPCOT was originally built around. While there is definitely more to the story than my simplified version I wrote here, it all boils down to Kodak mandating a hipper version without Dreamfinder and Figment.

The interesting question I find myself asking when I think about this story is, "Could it have worked?" Could the imagineers have taken Kodak's requests and made it work? Let's find out!

--The Challenge--

Imagineers, this is your challenge.

You must each create your own pitch for Version 2 of the Imagination Pavilion following Kodak's requests (No Figment or Dreamfinder beyond cameos) and completed in 1999

This will include replacements for both Captain EO and Journey into Imagination.

In real life, the Imagineers were given a rather small budget. For the sake of a fun round, you guys will have whatever budget you would like as long as it is not too extreme. Stay somewhat reasonable, but have a little fun with it. And feel free to demolish, combine, or change things as you see fit, again, within reason.

This Scene is due Wednesday, 11/07 at
11:59 PM WDW Time (8:59 Disneyland Time)

You have 6 days to complete this project.

--One for All: Individual Based Project--

This Scene will be a One for All: Individual Based Project. There will be this one prompt that all players will have to submit their own individual projects for. Team brainstorming threads will still be sent out for this round and players are encouraged to help each other and brainstorm and talk about the project with their team!

Remember!

If someone on your team does not submit, it won't affect the team score.

If you do not submit. You may be eliminated.

--Final Eilimation Round--

At the end of this round, there will be eliminations leading to our Final Five that will go on to play in Act 4 (Semifinals) and Act 5 (Finals).

@PerGronStudio won immunity for taking first place in Scene 6. As such, as long as he submits anything for this round, even just a single sentence, he will not be eliminated.

2 Spots in the finals will be chosen based on the season so far and their activity throughout.

2 Spots in the finals will be chosen based solely on this project. The best two projects of this scene will move on.

Everyone else other than those 5 people...

It was a pleasure hosting this competiiton for you and I hope you had a great time. I look forward to seeing what you do in the future.

But this scene will be the final scene for everyone but those five people.

So, be sure to make it count.

Alright, teams. Have fun! Go Create! Dream Big!

If you were an imagineer back in 1999, how would you update Journey into Imagination WITHOUT Figment or Dreamfinder?

Here's what I've thought off the top of my head: given that Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin that opened the previous year at the Magic Kingdom was an instant hit, why not turn Journey into Imagination into a similar type of attraction? The gaming technology for it has been developed already and proved to be popular with the guests, so why not use it for a second time? Some of the existing show scenes could even be reused and outfitted with gaming targets but they would be recontextualized with a new overall attraction framing device.

I'll sleep on this for now, and develop it further later!

Interactivity is such a FANTASTIC idea for the Imagination Pavilion that I can't believe I don't see it suggested more on the forum! I would love to see it focused more on interactivity and triggering neat effects rather than focusing on scores and competition. Like play the game and it makes the scenes come to life!

This sounds like a fantastic attraction that would be sure to be a fan favorite! My only complaint is that it might be slightly derivative of my project, Journey into Imagination with Bleamfinder and Bligment from the One Sentence Competition Season 4 Episode 2, but great minds think alike and the important thing is that your idea of Pigment and Steamfinder is totally unlike anything Epcot has ever had!
Remarkably similar to my actual plan.

Journey Into Imagination with Bleamfinder and Bligment!

Enjoy an amazing new trackless dark ride that will take over the space of both the current Imagination dark ride and the 4D theater.

Using state of the art practical effects and optical illusions to explore the world of imagination and the many things that have come about as a result of imaginative people such as Movies, TV Shows, Books, Art, Music, Video Games and even new media such as Web videos (including a cameo from the Tim Tracker who shares a mutual mustache based respect with Bleamfinder and Bligment).

Speaking of Bleamfinder and Bligment, they are your new hosts through this attraction who are very clearly not Dreamfinder or Figment as you can see from their fedoras and mustaches.

BONUS

Bulgaria will be added to the World Showcase with an attraction where Scrooge McDuck and the Ducktales gang are there to battle the mythical Lamia, a dragon who will deviate slightly from the classic mythology of the country to feature a purple, pink, and orange color scheme as well as to have powers over dreams.

Well, Journey into Imagination was whimsical, focused on the kids, and somewhat educational. If I were to do something different in 1999, I guess I'd keep it focused on kids but leaning more into the educational (like the 5 senses plus imagination...maybe something like the "Welcome to Earth" with Will Smith on Disney Plus). I liked the suggestion of @D Hulk in the One Word Competition of adding Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land--that would keep it in a similar vein as JII.

It's surprisingly hard to convince people to watch a nearly 2 hour long FastPass documentary, but everyone should watch it! Easily one of the best "movies" I've seen this year lol

I, for one, think killer Pooh Bears chasing down guests would be just the thing Disney needs to spice things up right now!

I can't really think of any questions, but I'd love to hear any thoughts or insights you have about different queues and stuff! What do you think is the most efficiently designed queue? Pre-show or no pre-show? Stuff like that!
I guess I don't go to Disney parks enough to know well of how each attraction works. Pre-shows are helpful from the standpoint of having something to do while you wait is better than having nothing. It also is seen as part of the attraction, so it's hard to evaluate. Sometimes, though, pre-shows seem to reduce the efficiency of attractions. I'm most aware of this with Haunted Mansion. If you're the first one to leave the pre-show, you might not have to wait at all to get on the Doom Buggy (which means there are some that are empty ahead of you). It seems like RnR pre-show might be skipped over...if there's not much of a queue after the pre-show. Tower of Terror seems to have a queue after the pre-show, so it's not really taking away from the capacity of the ride.

I would LOVE to see Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land in the parks! And the educational focus is a neat idea!

Re: Pre-shows

I’ve seen awful examples of pre-shows with much lower hourly capacities than their rides - Dark Knight at Six Flags Great Adventure - which always feel like they’re wasting your time. Sadly, Mystic Manor’s pre-show reduces its ride capacity, and besides it grows tedious on the 8th straight ride through. A shame, since generally it’s a fantastic attraction.

Attractions with staggered loads, like shows or theater rides (Flight of Passage), will inevitably see guests waiting in one spot for up to the length of the attraction. Pre-shows make sense here, though something like FOP’s is clearly stalling for time. Tiki Room at Disneyland does this sort of thing fantastically.

At Disneyland, Haunted Mansion’s Stretching Room serves a practical purpose to get guests below the railroad level, while also providing entertaining atmosphere which can easily be considered “part of the attraction.” There’s a bit more queue past these than at their Magic Kingdom counterpart, which in California results in bottlenecks instead of empty Doom Buddies. DisneySea’s Journey to the Center of the Earth does practical, atmospheric pre-shows the best with elevators which carry you upstairs while simulating a multi-mile dive into the earth, all without one word of dialogue, and with capacity to match the ride thanks to many elevators side-by-side.

Rides like Dinosaur or Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster don’t need pre-shows for any operational reason, so these are purely artistic choices. Bad decisions, I’d say. Dinosaur’s pre-show is almost pure, uncut exposition, and not terribly entertaining beyond its MST3K value, so god help you if you wanna marathon that ride. I like Velocicoaster’s approach, with a pulsing queue instead of holding guests in place, which makes the pre-show easier to ignore on the inevitable half dozen rerides.

I would also like to nominate Test Track's Design Studio for the "bad pre-show" category. Like, the concept is fine, but the fact that there's only one studio and that there's no way to skip it outright just makes line a complete slog, especially for those uninterested is the "design-a-car" aspect and just want to go on the ride; not helped by how they started redirecting the Fastpass line to it when it was only designed to accommodate the standby line. The only sliver lining here is that there's nothing stopping you from just running pass the terminals and pushing the exit doors open.

As a Dinosaur apologist who adores the ride, the story, the campy dialogue, and everything, I adore this preshow. That being said, I absolutely agree that I wish you could just skip it or have it be a part of the queue itself rather than a pre-show. It is fun (in my humble opinion at least) but when you’re like me and you try to ride the ride as many times as you can in a trip, it does become more of a pain in the butt than anything

At first, I thought "Isn't that the band that Gram 'My Joshua Tree cremation was bonkers' Parsons was in at some point?" but apparently my mind combined two band names (Flying Burrito Brothers and International Submarine Band) into one 😅

Don't ask me how I know these things. I'm not into country-rock for starters.
