I was there Nov 19-24. I usually ride POTC 2 or 3 times per visit but it was closed 3 different times I tried to ride. Managed to get in once which seemed to be a miracle.
I've never seen the mermaids. Where are they? I'm not seeing the greatest in the dark, so it may be my fault. lolThe Mermaid and Blackbeard projections weren't working when I saw it in mid November
I assume it's possible they've somehow been building the Disneyland caves and a second drop and this one day is to just connect the new flume with the old one?
What might be a good idea is to put the old boats back in service and trash the newer ones that are causing all the trouble. They must still have them, they do eventually trash stuff, but in this case I have the feeling that they kept them. That alone would be an improvement.
From what I understand they are taking on water and have some deficiency that has resulted in the back row unable to be used. This is just from what I have read, I rode it in January (I think the new boats were in place at that time) and had no issues at all. But I did notice that the seats were wet and I don't recall that happening with the old boats. What is the trouble that the current boats are causing? And I would also be curious what "trackless" system @wdwmagic was refering to. Just haven't paid that much attention to issues with Pirates lately, so some of this I am just curious about.
They are turning it into a wax figure walk through.

Right at the beginning of the ride.
I would tell you to look for them just after the mist screen, but the mist screen never works.
Sounds to me like some rich person has just hired it for the day, rather than it being closed for any refurbishment.

As soon as you make that right-hand turn after load, past the waterfalls, and can see the blue light of the skeleton beach up ahead, start looking for the mermaids in the water on either side of the boat.
IF the effect is working (it usually isn't) the mermaids will be projected onto two long patches of bubbles between your boat and the walls of the cave.
You really just get a glimpse of "something" in the water, so it's very fleeting.
It's not like you're missing much.
