Older Pal Mickey

It's been a while since we've been to DisneyWorld, but we are returning in Feb. I saw somewhere about new versions of Pal Mickey for sale. I know ours is older, probably the year it first came out. Will our older Pal Mickey still "work" this time?:veryconfu

All three versions of Pal Mickey work in the park. Just be aware that your older Pal will continue to say the phrases he did when he was programmed. Which means, it might be outdated and he won't discuss new things that opened after he was created. (i.e. my original 1.0 Pal still talks about Alien Encounter instead of Stitch.) Despite misinformation to the contrary, it is utterly impossible to update his phrases or download new sayings.

But yes, he will still work.

worth buying?

Not sure exactly what the pals are...the Unoffical Guide describes them as a stuffed Mickey with a transmitter that communicates. Is it worth carrying it around and then afterward, is it safe to be played with afterward?

Thanks!!

I've got version 1 from 2004 and got the newest one last November on our most recent trip.

Man, was that a mistake ! You would'nt believe the quarelling going on between the two as we were going through the parks.
Mickey 1 telling Mickey 3 about the Alien encounter and Mickey 3 calling him a for not knowing about Stitch.

Over in Animal Kingdom the older one didn't have a clue about EE either.
And Soarin was a surprise as well for him at Epcot. He was even having problems with the parade name changes.

It was pretty sad seeing old Mickey 1 like that. Mickey 3 all dressed up in his sorcerer's outfit was right on cue with all the new info.

I guess when we go back next month we'll need to leave the old Mickey at home. Oh well, he's still pretty good with the chintzy jokes and games.

I found that the 2007 pal mickey is quite a bit louder than the 2006 pal mickey.

I also found a new pirate costume for the pal mickey at MGM.

So the new Pal Mickey is Sorcerer Mickey? Or is it the Pirate Mickey? I've promised by DS that this time we will get a Pal Mickey (going spring break, could be useful to keep DS occupied in lines, etc.). He really wants a pirate! Are they sold at the resorts?

The newest (3rd version) Pal is dressed in a removable Sorcerer's Apprentice Costume. The Second was in a tux for the 50th. The original was just him in normal Mickey wear.

They sell outfits separately. Included are Safari, Tourist, Pin Trader, Poncho and the newest released in 2006 were a Pirate Capt'n and Santa. The Pirate and Santa sold out pretty quickly and it's been almost impossible to get your hands on a Pirate outfit. I've wanted one since November. They were back ordered and supposed to get more at the end of December, but I don't know if any ever came in. I was at AK last Saturday and I only checked one store but they didn't have any there.

The costumes are around $12 each. You can buy them at PM locations throughout the parks and resorts.

ps: Starting with the second edition (HCOE) they added more games like a "sing along" and increased his volume. It's hard to say how much difference there is between the 2nd and the 3rd edition besides clothing. It depends mainly I suppose on how many phrases he has for things that are just opening or in the works. (a la Living Seas with Nemo; Laugh Floor, etc.)

Sorry new here, so I'm still trying to figure out the abbreviations...what is PM? Also, what are the prices for the Pal? Also, is Mickey the only character or are there others?

Thanks!!

PM = Pal Mickey. We're talking about him in the thread and it get a little long writing "Pal Mickey" every time. Some people shorten it to just "Pal" as well.

Pal Mickey costs $65.

At this time, he is the only available character. Though you can also get a Spanish language Pal as well. Rumors have existed for years that they would release additional characters (Pooh was supposed to be the next in the series due to his massive popularity in merchandise) but so far, it hasn't happened. Who knows about the future. You can read a little more history of him here on his Wikipedia entry if you're curious. There's also a ton of prior posts on the subject here on the forum.

A quick question......we have two girls ages 4 & 7. When we go for our upcoming trip should we plan to buy two of these cuties or just one. I didnt know if someone on here had experienced trying to get the kids to share and if it was worth it to avoid the hassle and let them enjoy the trip more by purchasing two. I dont wanna buy something that is going to cause tears:cry: After all we just wanna have fun!

When you get to Disney see how the girls react to it in the store. If they both love it you know to get 2, if only one seems interested than 1. You can always buy one at the park you are in or at your resort, should a quarrel start with the Mickey.

I don't know if this is misinformation or something new, but a CM told us that with our Sorcerer PM purchased this past October that we could actually get the chip (PM's brain :) ) updated with new information.

Again I don't know if this was true or wishful thinking on the CM's part. It might be worthwhile to check to see if this is possible for your first generation PM.

Have fun!

Urban legend, sorry.

The newest trend with the "update" myth is this chip idea. While it may come to pass that one of these days, he'll be able to be updated, it's not yet possible in any of the three existing versions. Sadly, this "chip" myth is prevalent and causes a lot of confusion just like the old "wireless" myth before it.

The idea of being able to update Pal's content has been a wishlist feature since the first one was released. One of the Imagineers in an article discussing the original Pal three years ago, was the idea of how nice it would be and that hopefully, in years to come, they can offer that as an option.

Sadly, the future is not yet now.

Sorry, I don't mean to be pushy, but we're off to WDW in only a few days.. Does anyone at all actually know the answer of this question?

Thanks :sohappy: :sohappy:

It is, at the moment, hard to say.

ps: Starting with the second edition (HCOE) they added more games like a "sing along" and increased his volume. If you had the 1st edition, it's worth the upgrade. If you had the 2nd, it's probably only worth it if you want the new one specifically.
