I remember riding an airplane ride with my Grandmother all the time. I believe it was sponsored by Delta Airlines. I only remember bits and pieces of it but I'm pretty sure it was in Tomorrow land.

Any help would be appreciated!

If You Had Wings? Is that the nameof the ride you are talking about?
Was it called DREAMFLIGHT as well? If You Could Fly? I forget, but I think it is something like that. I am sure someone will be along to clarify this.

If You Had Wings (my boyfriend's old favorite) was sponsored by Eastern Airlines. Then when Eastern was gone, they had a ride called Delta's Dreamflight. That's the ride you are probably thinking of. There is a guy on EBay that actually sells a copy of that ride that he took with his camcorder. I don't remember it as a child, but it looked really cute :)

Weren't Delta's Dreamflight and If You Could Fly pretty similar rides? I must be thinking about If You Could Fly because this would have been pre-1989.

My memory is that If You Could Fly was sponsored by Eastern Airlines (?) and Delta's Dreamflight was when sponsors switched. I could be wrong, but I do remember at some point the airline sponsor change which could be the reason for a name change, but the ride stayed similar. :)

Yeah, it changed names when Eastern went bankrupt. If my memory serves me right they just changed a bit of the theme and logos.

The ride was originally "If You Had Wings" and it was sponsored by Eastern Airlines. It then changed very briefly to "If You Could Fly" during the time when Eastern left as a sponsor until Delta was named the sponsor. During this time the show stayed the same, but all references to Eastern were removed and the song was changed. It was shut down when Delta came on board and the show was changed (the track remained the same--as it is even today with Buzz). It reopened as Dreamflight ('89, I think). When Delta left, it closed and became Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin.

I used to love "If You Had Wings." The song was memorable (in an IASW kind of way). In fact, they still play it in Tomorrowland in the area music loop. You can even hear "Now Is the Time" from the original WDW version of the COP in the area music. I think it's great that there is still a little piece of the old WDW still around in the music.

There's a site dedicated to the history of "If You Had Wings": http://home.cfl.rr.com/omniluxe/iyhw-main.htm

If you had wings . . .

How funny that the mesmerizing "IASW-style" song springs to mind!

*sings to self: If you had wings . . . if you had wings . . . if you had wings, had wings, had wings . . .*

I loved that ride! It takes you back to a much simpler time . . . when even airlines were profitable! :animwink:

i remember being impressed with the spiraling light/jet engine effect as a kid, and the "speed rooms" were cool (still are on Buzz) but the attraction was kind of odd, in that it didn't really tell a story or provide any truly fantastic or futuristic elements, it was just "look what airplanes used to be like, and now [eastern/delta] can take you to all these great places". nice way to cool off for a few though, never had a line

Yes, I believe it was called Delta Dreamflight.

I remember riding it and thinking it was cool, but also remember thinking it was really commercialized for Disney. I know other rides are sponsored, but Delta seemed like the focal point of the whole experience. Anyone else agree?

That ride was "commercialized". It was part of the original rides at WDW that did not need a ticket. Free ride = commercial

Absolutely wonderful article, marni1971!

Yes, both IYHW and Dreamflight were very commercial. If you're a fan of "The Simpsons," you'll recall the episode a year or so ago where the family goes to "EFCOT" and the Spaceship Earth-type ride was sponsored by Eastern Airlines. It was what the people in 1955 thought the future would be like in 1987. It was pretty humorous, as Eastern Airlines' goal was world domination. Good for a chuckle.
