That's weird, Debbie- I have never heard of someone not being able to be put to sleep because of a difficult extraction. So Spidey- don't let that scare you because it must not happen very often :lol:

I had the same thing! When i was 8 I had 3 adult teeth and 3 baby teeth removed. Just ot get my braces on. I Have a really tiny mouth for my age (average size for an 5 year old!) but i was still scared to get the wisdom teeth removed. They are getting much bterr. I went out friday night and i braved my friends making fun of me. I love how they exagerate everyhting.. lol

I should have added that
a) Mine was done in the oral surgeon's office and maybe that had something to do with it. He should have taped my head to the chair so I wouldn't go with the tugging.
b) For some reason drugs like Dilaudid (spell?), morphine, Xanax, etc. don't make me sleep. Actually, morphine only burns the heck out of my veins and I ask for it to be removed. Only Soma will relax me enough to sleep and that's not for long.

Don't let the horror stories of pain frighten you. I would have never had children had I listened to them all. And having my wisdom teeth removed was critical for my orthodonic treatment---------I was 18 when I got braces and had to pay for them myself.

That's where I had mine done, too- a general dentist can't put you to sleep anyway *shudder* and even though a lot of people do fine without the IV, I know myself too well :lol: We send a lot of our extractions to the OS because my boss figures, let the experts handle it. I have to say I rather respect that opinion because I don't particularly care for those anyway!!!!

Actually, it is not at all uncommon, but most people confuse being put to sleep with "twilight sleep" which is what is commonly used. You are only partially asleep, however that works. It is used more commonly because it doesn't cause as severe of sleepiness afterwards. That is probably what she will get if she is having them cut out. You, now a days, ALWAYS are put into some sort of sedation if you are having them cut out.

No no...I had them removed. They just weren't a problem at all. They came out easy and I didn't have any of the normal symptoms that normally go along with the surgery. I was eating solif food about an hour after I got them out....the only problem I had was getting bits of food stuck in the gaping holes lol. I just got lucky and now I can rub it in all of your faces!!

Nope- not the case. You do always have the option, but some people choose not to due to the cost. They get the regula shot of whatever -caine the doctor happens to use. I always have to give those people a lot of credit because I know I wouldn't want to do it!

Twilight is a "lighter" version of general anesthetic. It's a good option for people who are extremely nervous but don't want to pay for the full knock-out. Of course when you get a good discount like I do you go for the whole shebang :lol:

I had mine out one morning (two were impacted and two were not). They had to cut three of them into two or more pieces to get them out. But I was completely under so I dont remember anything. When I they woke me up I was talking about going to FL to get my paycheck and other weird things like that. Well that night I ate a hamburger and never had any pain at all. I never had to take a tylenol or anything. So not all experiences are bad.

Had mine taken out awhile ago...couldn't take the pain meds (stomach problems). Try cold compresses to your face although warm works better for others.

ps to all those who are about to have this done:
if you have bleeding take a teabag, wet it with cold water and put it on the site, The tanic acid will help to stop the bleeding. (my dentist told me this trick).

Try to get a good night's sleep (I know, I know...but try anyway).
the more relaxed you are the better things will go for you. Are you having general anesthesia? If you are remember it takes a little longer to recoup. Good luck and don't forget the ice bags!

Well I had my experience last Wednesday, and its much better now.

I don't remember anything from the procedure, general anethesia is defintiely the way to go! Some of the worst pain is the first couple of days after you go off the pain medication and try to eat some normal food. :dazzle:

But hang in there, it does get better!

Woo-Hoo! I am at week six tomorrow! I am 100% better, but still must face the reality that food will forever get stuck behind my teeth back there where there is now this BIG space. It doesn't fail that everyday, something gets stuck! Glad to hear you are feeling better, Stitch!

To throw in my dumb two cents... it's all about the pain tolerance. My mom swore up and down that I wouldn't be able to yawn for six months (as was her case), but I was back to my normal self within a day or two. But, I have a pretty high pain tolerance, too. (I did natural childbirth once.... only once. I have a high pain tolerance, not a masochistic side.) The worst part for me was the sedatives... they make me sick. Each time I had something when i was in labor i got sick. You just aren't going to know what it will do to you until you get there. Throw some ice packs on your face, take some anti inflammatories, and take it easy. It goes away.

I'm Back... my bottom mouth is still numb, but I can feel the pain gradually setting in. I was told the bottom ones are worse.

I remember when I got my wisdom teeth out... I was in so much pain, so my mother went out to get me some ice cream. She came back, and was like, "Here, I got you your FAVORITE kind, HEATH BAR CRUNCH!!!!!" If I hadn't been in so much pain... lol...
