OCVibe Approved by Anaheim City Council.

I wonder if vibe stopping is related to the angels land sale deal falling through. I could also see the opposite happened. Without the angels developing all their land there is less competition for vibe so now would be the time to get this done

Summer 2024 UPDATE:

This morning I had a long phone call with a good friend still in OC about coordinating dinners and events this summer, and I asked how OCVibe was going as he was intimately involved in OC commercial real estate for decades during his successful career years. And...

Nothing is happening with OCVibe. It's now June, 2024 and still nothing. Construction has started on the long-delayed parking garage that the City of Anaheim is paying for and building next to the Honda Center, but that's a city project separate from OCVibe.

OCVibe has not begun the design and permit process with the City of Anaheim for any of its proposed towers or buildings, and has made no 2024 announcement about when that pre-construction process might start. The 2028 Olympics are now 4 years away, and still.... nothing for OCVibe. 🤔
Construction has started on the long-delayed parking garage
That makes sense. That's almost always the first step in the moving tile puzzle game.

OCVibe has not begun the design and permit process with the City of Anaheim for any of its proposed towers or buildings,
This is very telling. It seems like the meat of this project is going nowhere fast.

The parking garage under construction is a long delayed and way overdue project funded by City of Anaheim bonds. They should have built that garage 15 years ago when Honda took over sponsorship and started getting bigger name events playing there, but Anaheim couldn't/wouldn't spend the money for it in 2010. It has nothing to do with the OCVibe project funding or ownership or management.

The OCVibe project; the apartments, the hotels, the theater venues and clubs and restaurants, and the Woonerf, are all dead in the water as of June, 2024. Pretty much as it's been since it was announced with computer generated concept art.

The best part of this whole OCVibe thing is they got Anaheim's Mayor Aitken to start using the phrase "Anaheim riverfront" in official conversation and communication, in reference to the Santa Ana River alongside the Honda Center. And Mayor Aitken can even say "Anaheim riverfront" with a straight face, which takes practice.

This just in...

Henry and Susan Samueli have just acquired the industrial building at the corner of St. College and Orangewood. The property will be used as office space for OCVibe.

Now the ball can really get rolling.

Woonerfs don't build themselves, you know!

This looks to me like it's just a buy to add capacity to their existing parking lots, with a longer term goal for whatever redevelopment around Angel Stadiumm they might get off the ground in the 2030's or later.

Mr. Samueli is a savvy businessman, don't get me wrong. He is playing the long game here with these buys, and his nearly lifetime investment in Anaheim. But OCVibe getting off the ground and opening at least one hotel and a Woonerf by the time the Olympics arrive in four years? That seems more and more unlikely with each passing month with absolutely no progress on even beginning the first phase of OCVibe.

Mr. Samueli's new warehouse buy outlined in red, with OCVibe outlined in blue a mile away as the crow flies.

Those permits were just pulled yesterday! Could it be happening? Or maybe getting ready to happen? 🥳

Those last two permits seem to be for a preview center of some kind near the Honda Center, if I'm reading it right.

I had dinner with some OC friends who are familiar with this project. It still hasn't begun construction on any of the retail/housing/office/entertainment components of the project. There is no announced start date for construction on any of it.

Still not a Woonerf in sight. Or even rumored.

The current construction is for the new parking garages that were all funded by the City of Anaheim, and are over a decade late. Those parking structures stem from a city-funded parking plan for the Honda Center, and had been in funding and political purgatory since the 2000's.

2025 is now here, and OC Vibe is still in a permanent holding pattern. But at least there will finally be much better parking options for Ducks games and Honda Center events by next Christmas!

I hadn't posted this as it isn't Disney-related, but permits are being reviewed, which could mean a lot or nothing.

Honestly, how can we not be eternally grateful for your fantastic permit thread and sleuthing abilities?! :D

They've got plans, that's not in question. It's just the photos and images and all the work so far on that site is just for the city-funded parking structures that the Samueli's finally worked out with the City of Anaheim to get done. Finally.

As I understood it, the first phase of actual public amenities and retail will be tucked under and alongside the western bank of parking structures being built now along the Orange Freeway. That's mostly what they call the "Market Hall", which will plug in to the eastern flank of that long parking structure.

This photo that @Jiggsawpuzzle35 posted above, is the second parking structure being built on the eastern side of the Honda Center along the riverbed. I don't believe it has any retail/dining planned for it.

In short, the Market Hall could be their first actual offering for the public at OCVibe besides the city owned parking structures now under construction. It would basically be a food hall with some restaurants and bars, probably a Ducks and Angels merchandise store, etc. It would need to get going fast in '25 to make it by the '26-27 Ducks season. It could make it by the Spring '27 Angels season.

But the vast bulk of the OC Vibe complex; the 20 story hotels and apartment blocks, the 5,000 seat concert venue, the 2,000 seat stage theater, the new version of the Golden Bear music venue, the Woonerf and parks, etc. are all still only an AI created fever dream of clip art. Nothing has begun construction.

I think they are waiting to complete the parking structure before they ramp up construction of the food hall, hotel, theater, etc…. It’s a hot mess now with parking but luckily for me, I park 10 minutes away (since 2005) and walk to the arena.
