Obsessed with Resorts?

This may come across as rude to some people, but does anyone else find the obsession some posters have with resorts very weird? I mean, hey, we all have our favorite resort, and it's awesome that we love these places so much that we love to talk about them. But the extent to which some people take it, is just bizarre. Having a pre-typed statement that you paste whenever someone asks about a resort? Using your resort as the best option for anyone, regardless of their circumstance?

It all just seems a bit too important to some people.

Forums make many people seem obsessed about many things - like discounts, DVC working for them or not, dining experiences, attractions etc.

Others get hung up on if they have chosen the correct resort for their trip - some call it Resort Anxiety Disorder.

i think its more the fact that people can only describe their own experience and once youve done that once it can look repetitve to someone who has seen it before.
people come on these forums for advice. when someone new comes along the same questions get asked again and so the same answers get repeated for the regulars. people just like the peace of mind that their holiday is going to go smoothly so worry about things that they probably wouldnt think about

People might seem obsessed with their resort to you, but to people not on this forum they would think that you/we are overly obsessed with Disney in general. My husband is one of them. I think that if you are on a forum dedicated to any on thing most people will be obsessed with it. I guess it's all in what you like. I think people on a nascar forum are obsessed but that's just because it's not something that matters to me (sorry to anyone that likes Nascar).:)

I agree - it's understandable if people have their favorites (and least favorites) and want to talk about how wonderful (or terrible) they are.

But in responding to trip advice questions, we should be open to the fact that people have difference circumstances and preferences. And that others' experiences with a particular resort or restaurant may have been different. Many of the problems guests experience are basically random, and could have just as easily occurred at another resort or restaurant.

I guess obsession is one way to look at it, but for me and my family, I guess it falls more to tradition. I have been going to Disney for 20 yrs plus, and due to memories of my son as a small boy, we tend to go to the Poly Concierge, year after year. I guess it comes down to opinions for most, I wouldn't turn my nose up to any Disney resort, but I sure don't comment on other families that may travel to Disney the way we do, experience as well as nostalgia, again, depends on how you look at it

Couldn't agree with you more Cap! I think it's safe to say that we all have our obsessions with all things Disney, but to criticize or invalidate another's opinion simply because they don't agree with your own is not only narrow minded, but downright ignorant.

Everybody has their own special memories of WDW, and sometimes it's fun for us to relive those memories with one another here on these boards. But the minute you make me feel that my experiences are somehow inferior to another's is the moment I lose my mind. Enjoy WDW in your own special and unique way!

It sounds to me like these folks are actually just more organized than the rest of us. Lots of people ask the same basic questions about the resorts; to have a pre-typed response could be seen as a time-saver. OR, it could be that these people are trying to take over the world by slowly converting everyone into resort-specific drones.

I think if we apply Occam's razor (which accepts the simplest explanation among competing theories) we would find that they are really just trying to be helpful and happen to have effective time management strategies.

Don't be a hater.

I kind of agree with the OP. For me the room is for showering and sleeping. I want to spend as much time as I can in the parks, so it's value for me all the way. My wife prefers POP, I don't have a preferance. Just point me to the bus stop.

I think some are maybe misunderstanding my point. I love the Wilderness Lodge and I think it's the best resort on property. However, if someone asked me what the best resort choice would be for access to Animal Kingdom, I wouldn't say Wilderness Lodge. There are some that do that. We ALL have our favorite resorts, but it's almost as if some are so concerned about what resort other people choose, it's as if they work for the resort and get some sort of kicker if the poster books that resort.

Like I said, I'm not trying to be rude. It's just not something I understand. It's like trying to convince someone that loves country music that they should be listening to Metallica.

I get where you are coming from Captain..but I guess people get comfortable with one resort...and then put the blinders on...I just stayed at the Boardwalk over News years..waterview room..it was fanrastic..2 years ago I stayed at the Yacht Club..waterview..it was fantastic as well...Ive also stayed at the Poly, Contemp, and Coronado..I wouldnt stay off property at this point for anything. I probably wouldnt stay at a non deluxe resort at this point either as I like the amenities..BUT would never not reccomend staying at the All Star to a family that couldnt afford other locations..because even the lowest resort at Disney is still Disney and you get immersed in the whole expierience..and of course witht he ecomeny people value the money that is being spent

If there are specific individuals who tend to be so biased that they often give bad advise I agree that would not be good and could adversely affect the people who act on it. That may be something you should take up with those individuals themselves or even the moderators. I doubt they will change their ways based on this thread.

I apologize for the harshness of my earlier post. It's just that I can't stand the bullying and outright attacks that many people on these boards are guilty of. We're all here for the same reason and, given that reason, you'd think this would be a happy/friendly place.

I haven't really seen what you are talking about Captain. Do you see a lot of people using the same response over and over? I haven't been on this post for a long time, but I have never seen the same response. As for loving a certain resort... I love all of them. We go to whatever resort has the most for us (at that time) to do based on the parks we plan to attend the most. I've acutally never stayed at Fort Wilderness because it doesn't seem quick to any park. In the past we have always tried to be near Epcot since we like to go there daily. This Christmas we are staying at Bay Lake Tower because my son wants to do the sorcerer thing (at Magic Kingdom) and I want to see the fireworks there. ARen't all the resorts close for their categories?

I see your point that some people take it to far. I guess if someone is asking for a resort recommendation, by all means state your opinions. But, I don't think you should shove your preference down anyone's throat (in fact, to do so would be counter-intuitive becasue it would end up making your resort overpopulated and less desireable for you, but anyways)...

Having said that, I guess I would agree with people who value the resort. Having just come from a trip last week where we stayed at the Wilderness Lodge, my trip was different because of that resort. The prior two years we stayed at Coronado and Pop Century. It is a big differnece in convenience and stress to stay at a hotel so close in proximity to MK for my family and to be able to use the boats and not the buses. It generally also had a much less stressful bus system because there are quite simply fewer people at the hotel trying to get on the same bus. Also, the ease of going down to the restaurant in the morning to get a milk compared to hiking across Coronado in the morning to get to the cafeteria made it a better experience.

I guess what I'm getting at is that my stay at Wilderness made my trip to WDW a better experience because of the conveniences of the resort. Yes, I paid a pretty penny, but if someone is in a position to do that, then I think it is important for them (if they are asking) to know that you can have a less stressful trip by upgrading to a hotel closer to your park of choice or to a hotel that is smaller in size and/or has less people staying at it (making the bus system much more tolerable). I don't think it is the hotel that makes a trip magical or ruins a trip, but there are differnces in hotels that can contribute to the overall experience of your vacation. And, if someone wants to know then I think its perfectly okay for people to express their opinions on their favorite/least favorite resorts.

I see it alot on threads for trip advice. Someone will say what their favorite resort is and why. Then someone will counter that with their favorite and why its better. Next thing you know, its an argument/debate over which resort has less bus stops, better pools, better mouse keeping, etc. etc. I think people just dont like being told they are wrong, especially when it comes to Disney. We all think we know it all and what is the best way to enjoy a Disney trip. It's easy to forget that every family has different needs and wants. I do agree with Captain that its odd how fiercely people defend their resorts, especially when someone points out a con it has. I'm just glad that we have such wonderous variety for resort choices. Only resorts I don't like are the ones off property. Leaving the magic of the property everyday would kill my Buzz, even if it is way cheaper. Don't do it...please..don't...nooooooooooo!

We need time for things to happen.
Seems more like you have a pet peeve with people that spout off about their favorite resorts ;)

I know people chime in when people ask whats your favorite resort etc.( As matter of fact didn't you start and track a "favorite resort" thread for us?)
But I have yet to see someone on these board ask "I'm looking for a quite secluded cabin type atmosphere, any suggestions?"
and someone says "you will LOVE the Contemporary!"

Like someone else said - if your on a wdw discussion board and you start wondering why people are obsessed with things like resorts you are already off to a bad start...;)

Fast Passes, Brazilian tour groups, FLE, Monorail during EMH, etc. etc. pp.
