NY Times: Bob Iger Effectively Back As CEO

Why? He hasn't really done much for the parks other than mandate unnecessary IP integration that the imagineers at best sometimes make it work (Ex: Pandora) and at worst are forced to destroy park sightlines and integrity (Epcot).
I have a great deal of respect for Iger, his decisions may not translate into what park lovers want but he lifted the company in a time where is truly needed it, holistically.

I think he had done a stellar job at running the company.

What did he actually do? Decide to buy a bunch of money making properties at extremely high costs and then force those properties into the parks which he didn’t seem to know anything about.

I’d rather have the live action remakes vs. the Eisner level cheap sequels, so I’ll give him that much but still... all of those live action remakes and Pixar sequels should have been brand new content.

He did green light a lot of expansion in the parks with top-tier buildouts. I fundamentally disagree with the overuse of IP everywhere, particularly the overlays, but I'd much rather take PANDORA: THE WORLD OF AVATAR over CHESTER & HESTER'S DINORAMA, in terms of a park expansion.

Overall, Eisner was a great CEO but his last 5 years or so really put a black mark on his tenure.

Hopefully this means Iger will remain in control.

What difference does it make now? If the case against Chapek was based on him being a hatchet man, at this point it seems he is the best man to take over. Whatever cuts people feared may happen if Chapek took over, will seem quaint compared to what is coming. And whether the orders are coming from Iger or Chapek really matters not.

I feel bad for Chapek, I mean he had a run....
But it was a bad timing for Chapek to takeover Disney, and Iger taking control is probably the best way to keep the company contact amid crisis.

I know alot of people doesn't like Chapek because of hows he's been doing with Theme parks, But Disney Is not Just Theme parks, Its multimedia business as a whole.

IMO they should have given the new position to someone that didn't need to come from Theme parks Division.

Shelf life is shelf life...can’t reset it when it’s expired. 15 years is quite enough.

All his “strategic pricing decisions” are about to hit the main stage after the student band finishes their set...Can’t wait to see how it plays with bob in the front row.
Like create a monopoly instead of developing content of their own? ;)
I assumed he quit when the studio realized there was no way to make the eagle look real in their planned live action remake of Rescuers: Down Under

All I know is this article is Snark Level 100. "Now he’s reasserting control and reimagining Disney as a company with fewer employees and more thermometers." Oof.
Tone doesn’t supersede substance...That’s a legitimate point to consider.
But he isn’t CEO? He’s just playing puppet master, which was the intent the entire time.
He is not...he fulfilled his contract and triggered whatever conditions where set in that contract. The dumbest lawyer on earth could get that document right.

People seem to think his “resignation” wasn’t to benefit him. Of course it was...how stupid are we? First day on the planet. But I’ve seen 1,000 prognostications that he somehow walked away with nothing...that he didn’t control his own terms...or he has to work 100 hours a week for minimum like the night manager at Checkers now...

It’s insane.

Chapek is a B rate cheap suit who has rotted in the logjammed internal ranks for too long...

Outside leadership is usually the way to go...and likely is here as well.

Oh definitely. When he stepped down, Shanghai was closed for around a month. He didn’t want to be CEO as the ship was going down. We know how much he cares about his legacy.

Definitely confirms the theory of who’s in charge!

That article had very little substance. Iger is attending more BlueJeans meetings? Uhm ok. There really isn't any indication of where they were in the handoff process to make a good determination of whether Iger was always calling the shots or had actually tried to hand things over. There is no depth to this article. All it seems to show is that Iger's number was still in reporter's speeddial.

This just makes Iger’s retirement more suspicious. Clearly Chapek does not have the Board’s confidence and Iger is not yet willing to let go.

Indeed. I assume part of Iger's confidence comes from Disney having had a very clear roadmap and plan for pretty much all of its business ventures.

There was no need for pressing company reinvention or another big acquisition. Debts needed to be paid down, a few key aquisitions need tweaking, but he is there to do that in the background. I assume with the successful launch of Disney+ he realized there was nothing else he really "wanted/needed" to do.

Stepping back and let someone literally just keep the ship pointing in the right direction (Chapek) until they found someone else a few years down the line seems smart. Chapek isn't exactly young, I'm sure they were planning on him being in the roll 3... 5 years max.

I wasn't sure if Iger saw this coming and decided to bail, but clearly he didn't. He doesn't have the greatest confidence in Chapek... but clearly was confident nothing needed doing.

While most seem happy with this, did everyone just skip over the part about the mood at Disney is dire. They aren't going to go bankrupt but I think the magic every loves won't be there when they do reopen. I have a feeling there will be more cuts to entertainment at the parks. They will do whatever they can to make that money back.
