Okay, now I remember. Thanks for the clarification. We had so many messages going back and forth that I lost track.

Okay, maybe you're right. However, Disney cleans their rides better then any carnival does, so again I asked why would you go to a dirty carnival when you can go to Disney's clean carnival?
True that Disney is cleaner. As a matter of fact, that is one edge I think California Adventure has over DL. I suppose it is largely because it is newer, but it does seem cleaner than DL. Still, my preference would be not to pay Disney prices and have it be essentially a carnival, clean or not.

If they are going to make a second park it's pointless not to copy the WDW rides (the reason why some WDW rides aren't in Disneyland is because of space).
From a business standpoint I would agree, but I'm coming from the standpoint of a guest. I want something new that I can't see anywhere else. I think California Adventure's attendance record has shown that others feel that way too. So what seemed like a good business decision because it saved money, turned out to actually be a bad business decision.

Since California Adventure is new land, it is better to put it there because it doesn't replace classic Disneyland rides. Muppets needs to be cloned, Disneyland visitors have been missing this great show for over a decade.

Again, this sounds more like a business decision. I'm speaking from my own personal viewpoint. I'm fortunate enough to be able to go to WDW and visit the attractions there if I want, but can also go to DL. I personally like the Muppets but wouldn't have put it high on my list of attractions that the West Coast "has to have". There are others I would have chosen first, but again, that's MY preference.

If you are going to argue that for Buzz, then the Muppets fit in because some of their shows where filmed in California, Aladin fits in because the movie was made in California, A Bug's Land fits in because there are bugs in California, & Millionaire fits in because there are game shows in California.

Well I didn't say it was a STRONG argument (LOL). I think the arguments you're making above (which I assume you're making half-jokingly) have been made by others who were SERIOUS about it. Actually I guess now that I think about it, Toontown would have been a better location for Buzz.

I'm going back to the original question or Disneyland vs. Disney World. I have never found this to be a fair question. I feel you can compare the Magic Kingdom in WDW to Disneyland but not resort to resort. The Florida property is huge and isolated which allows for more parks and more magic.

However, I find Disneyland to be a far superior park to the Magic Kingdom. Fantasyland, the heart of Disneyland is magical in CA. The facades have much better themeing. While we could use some of the rides they have their like Buzz and The Tomorrowland Transit authority, I would not want to lose Alice in Wonderland, Mr. Toad, Casey Jr. and the other Fantasyland rides that are missing in Orlando. IASW there is just another attraction and does not have the beautiful exterior of the one in CA. There is no comparison between the two POC and Indiana Jones is a great ride.

I've headed to WDW next month and we spend very little time in the MK because the park just doesn't seem to have charm.

Which do you prefer, apples or oranges? Surely you prefer one over the other right? But oh wait, you CAN'T compare apples and oranges (or so the old adage says) so how could anyone possibly choose between the two?? My point being, of course you can compare DL (the one theme park) to WDW (the entire resort). I've never understood why people make the claim that you can or that it is "not a fair comparison". You can compare anything you want to one another. It is just answering the question of which you'd prefer.

Having said that, however, if we were to compare just DL to MK, then it does become a more difficult comparison. Personally if I were making this comparison 10 years ago, I would have chosen DL hands down, almost entirely because of the same reasons you've stated above. But DL has just become so run down in recent years that MK just seems more like a real "Disney" park by comparison. It's clean, it's fresh, and it's SAFE!!

One thing I love about walking onto Main Street at DL is looking up and seeing the light on in Walt's apartment. For those that don't know about it. It's the Window above the Firestation. You can see the light on in the window. When Walt passed his wife decided that the light would remain on in Walt's honor. I always get a special feeling from that.

DL is great to go to at least once to experance the Matterhorn. It was my last ride of the night to be exact. Brilliant ride...

I went to DL during the holidays and I saw a tiny Christmas tree lit up inside there! I thought that was kinda cool :)

Ooooookay then. Well, that was surreal, to say the least. Anyway....

Among DL's redeeming features, I would list the following:

-Matterhorn (one of the best Disney attractions ever)
-Walt's apartment
-The fact that DL, DTD and DCA are all within easy walking distance of one another
-Pirates, Space Mountain and Haunted Mansion are better than their WDW counterparts (Except that Space Mountain at DL is closed for like another year I think, AND it's not as safe as the one at WDW)
-The exterior of DL's Small World is more spectacular than the one at WDW

Aside from those points, I honestly can't really think of anything about DL that is better than WDW. And these features wouldn't be enough to ever make me choose DL over WDW. So for my money, I would still highly recommend WDW over DL any day.

my thoughts

I live near DL and go quite a bit but I have been to WDW 5 times..

You cannot compare DLR to WDW.

I would compare

Disneyland to Magic Kingdom

and as a long shot

DCA to Disney STudios

DL destroys MK in almost every way

The only thing MK has that i wish DL had was space. On busy days at DL it is way to crowded. At MK everything is more spread out

here are my thought broken down by lands

Main Street: DL
Dl is more charming and whimsical...a lot has to do with the scale of the buildings. The MK version is much more in your face.

Adventureland: DL
Mk does have a longer and better Jungle Cruise. DL has the original Tiki Room and Inidiana Jones Adventure. MK has Aladdin M. Carpets...nuff said. MK has Pirates but read below about that.
Treehouses is a wash

New Orleans Square vs. Liberty Square
Its pretty much known Pirates is better at DL... I like the NOS look of it compared to the ADV look at MK
Haunted Mansion seems to fit better at NOS than LS but that can go either way...its a close tie, but DL has the Holiday version.
The Hall of Presidents kills Abe...but the sound effects bring Abe closer.

Frontierland/ Critter Country
I like the Mk versions of Big Thunder and Splash better than DL, but I like DL's placement of these attractions... Splash is to close to Thunder at MK...I think they should have built Splash in Fantasyland at MK but thats my thought. Also DL Splash has a better final drop...much steeper.

Fantasyland/Toontown
DL hands down again. DL had the Medieval Faire theme back in the late 70's. It seemed like I stepped back in time when I'm at the MK. Toontown at MK looks like it was done in a month...the tents are terrible. Plus we have the Matterhorn and a lot of the dark rides that you don't have.

Tomorrowland
MK wins this HANDS DOWN...nuff said

DCA and the rest of WDW

Well I look at DCA the same way I visited MGM when it first opened.

Its growing and will be a terrific park before its all said and done. Now look at MGM it's very popular and has some the best rides Disney has ever did.

WDW is a better Disneyfied vacation... but DL is a park you visit while you are visiting the rest of Southern California

Well those are my thoughts ...Thanks for reading - Brian

As a bona fide "baby boomer", I watched Disneyland open for business. It was paradise to my 10-year-old eyes, and I couldn't wait to visit. I finally got to go in April of 1993, and I was rather shocked at the appearance of the park. We stayed at the Disneyland Hotel, and we ended up taking the tram to and from the park because the monorail kept breaking down. The park was PACKED with teenagers running wild, and it was quite an experiene waiting in line for each attraction. Line-jumping was the order of the day, and folks were downright rude. Unfortunately, this attitude infected the Cast Members as well.

As I read more and more about how Cynthia Harriss and crew are cutting corners, etc., it seems that Walt's dream is disintegrating. What a shame......

Anyone agree or disagree?

Oops - I hit the submit button before I finished answering the original question.. Comparing WDW to Disneyland.

I much prefer WDW to DL because it's a total immersion experience. You can let the real world slip away and be a kid again.

My vote is for WDW all the way.

Agree!!! Last night I was watching the DVD, "Walt: The Man Behind the Myth" (an excellent DVD if you haven't seen it!). When it got to the part about Disneyland and how it was such a labor of love for Walt, I got really sad. I don't know what burns me more, the fact that Cynthia Harriss is destroying Disneyland or the fact that there are so many so-called Disney "fans" who defend her.

The fans who defend her and Eisner. It makes me angry beyond words to see the company deteriorate, but it's even more aggravating to see and hear people who are so God damn blinded that they wouldn't give a flying you-know-what if Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty Castle deteriorated a bit more each day.

Just because Disney was a huge part of your life growing up "doesn't" mean you have to take many of their decisions -- decisions the majority of us percieve to be boneheaded and stupid -- as something similar to some sort of blessing from Heaven.

Thanks Trekkie and Merlin for your thoughts on DL vs. WDW. I'm wondering who is defending Cynthia Harriss and her ilk with the decision to cut DL back to permanent carnival status. I'll bet it's the bean counters who are delighted that they saved a buck.

Again, my heart goes out to all those loyal DL fans and cast members. Maybe the Disney suits will realize what is happening to the once Happiest Place on Earth, and make some changes.
If not, they should be honest about their intentions.

The only things these people care about is money. You know, more money for Eisner's pocketbook.

All they care about is money; and how much of it they can squeeze out of who they percieve as gullilble idiots, er, I mean "guests."

That would be called The Walk in Walts Footsteps Tour.
I cant answer the 1st questin Since I have never been to WDW
But I will see it before once in my lifetime:)

well i think disney world is better then disneyland... but i could just be me... since i've been ther alot... umm... there really is no difference... most of the rides are like the ones u have ridden in wdw... except for soaring, indiana jones (that ride is great), and the rides on paradice pier... thats about it... well the good rides anyway... but i would definently vist disneyland just cuz... it would be a differnt atmosphere then the one in florida... man i stll can't believe that arnold is our governor... i swear i am scared of what he might to the state....

The MK in Florida may be bigger, but DL gives you so much more bang for your buck. Fantasyland is so much bigger, IASW is about four times bigger than the WDW version, DL still has an actual Main Street Cinema and magic shop, and there are over 50 attractions and rides, compared to 25 yet a few dozen shops in the Floridian version.
