Trip Report November split stay AoA/AKL

I’ll have to work on a more creative title at some point! But for now, here’s the background (mostly copied from my last report)…

We decided to make another trip around my husband’s conference this year and invited my parents to join us. Some of you may remember me from last year as the crazy lady who flew with 3 kids, but this time our family of 5 could fly together both ways and my parents met us there.

Our first choice of hotel was 2 connecting “preferred pool” rooms at Pop Century, but they were already unavailable when I booked in April. Since they couldn’t guarantee the connecting rooms anyway, and we weren’t sure which section of Pop we’d end up in, we pivoted a bit. We landed on a Lion King suite at AoA, so we knew we’d all be together and not terribly far from transportation. Being in connecting rooms was our priority because my husband and I were also planning to have a day at universal with just the 2 of us. But we learned there was an Orlando Informer meetup while we were there, so we did that instead of a one-day 2-park ticket! It actually didn’t cost much more and included food & drinks, so seemed like a no-brainer for us.

But 3 or 4 days after we booked AoA, my husband said, “We’re planning our 3rd year in a row at Disney. Should we consider DVC?” 🤯

After much research and discussion, we are officially members with Riviera as our home resort! We changed our last 3 nights at AoA to a 2-bedroom savanna view at Kidani Village. We also realized annual passes would be more cost effective if we were already planning two trips within a year, so we did that as well. This also saved us several hundred dollars on the AoA room!

In the planning stages, I did have a bit of a weird interaction around Memory Maker. I had paid for it when I first booked in April, but once we decided to buy into DVC and the Sorcerer passes, it’s significantly cheaper to add Memory Maker to that. It was fairly painless to remove the $185 charge from the AoA reservation. The difficulty came when I tried to add it to my Sorcerer pass. I first had to be transferred from photo pass reps to ticketing. The second person I talked to said he could help and gave me a total cost of nearly $200.
Parks And Recreation Donna GIF

I thought the price was $99, so I wondered if he was trying to add it to both me and my husband. But no, it was the difference in the price of the AP from when I had bought it. I had made a point to buy the APs before the prices increased, so there was no way I was going to pay the difference now, just because I was trying to add Memory Maker. I’m trying to give them the benefit of the doubt that it was just a glitch in how their system works. Because it honestly makes zero sense.

Anyway, it had to be escalated to another CM and he was able to work it out at the correct price for me.

Okay, I think that’s is for pre-trip info…I’ll get into the fun next time!

Even though we had nowhere to be, my kids were still up early! This first pic was taken at 7:11am 🤦‍♀️

We’d ordered breakfast foods from Kroger for the kids, but my husband and I decided to try Sanaa. He picked up his eggs Benedict and my Boere breakfast around 8:30 and we ate in the room.
IMG_1738.jpeg

We had a very relaxed morning in the room before we decided to check out Jambo house.
IMG_1741.jpeg

There wasn’t enough room for all of us on the first shuttle that came, so my husband and I walked with the stroller. It was warmer and longer than I had hoped!
IMG_1743.jpeg

We checked out the gift shop before taking the kids to the playground. They ended up enjoying this one more than the one at Kidani! We then looped around to see some of the animals before reentering the building at the Mara.

We decided to go ahead and get some kids meals at The Mara, but my husband and I were planning for Sanaa-to-go for lunch later. My parents are less adventurous eaters, so I think they got something here too.

Back at Kidani, it was time to check out the pool. After playing in the playground and splash area for a few minutes, I took 7yo and 4yo to find the big water slide.

I went down with them once and that thing is surprisingly long and fun! They then spent the rest of their time going down over and over again. My husband guessed they probably went about 20x. He went once too, IIRC.

Back at the room, we relaxed some more. I loved this huge balcony.
IMG_1758.jpeg

It may not have been wise to make this our first DVC stay. Any subsequent balconies will probably be disappointing lol

Around 2, we were finally ready for lunch ourselves. We shared the bread service and the combo with rice, butter chicken, and lentil daal. It was good, but I’m sure it would’ve been better if it wasn’t takeout.

Around 3:30, we distracted the kids so we could sneak out and leave them with my parents. I wanted to leave plenty of time to Uber over to Universal and get checked in for the OI Meetup. I really had no idea if there would be a long line to check in and I wanted to enter the parks as early as we could, which was 5pm.

I needn’t have worried about the timing. Security going into City Walk was quick and there were people with signs along the way pointing us in the right direction. We made our way into the sound stage near Rip Ride Rockit. They had a lot of lines set up inside but no one waiting in them. We were immediately called up by someone to check in. Then we walked back out to kill time until 5. It seemed like an unnecessarily long walk back to the sound stage, for as quick as the checkin was. But I guess that’s their only option for an indoor checkin area. 🤷‍♀️

There were a bunch of people waiting near the entrance of US, and we planned to start our time there too, so we found a spot to sit on a low wall and just waited it out. I had considered going to the preview center for Epic Universe, but didn’t feel like adding in extra walking (incidentally, this ended up being my day with the most steps for the whole trip!). Maybe if we’d had a lot of time to kill.

There were still OI folks around giving instructions and maybe 10 min before 5:00, one announced that he’d been informed we could start scanning into the park! Within a few minutes we were in.

This was only my 4th time at Universal. The last time was in 2016 and I was pregnant, so I literally only rode the Hogwarts Express and watched shows (usually by myself while others were on rides). So there were a lot of things that I’d never been on or seen before. Those were my priorities for tonight!

I wanted to catch the final Bourne Spectacular show at 5:30 because I’d heard it was good. The only line short enough to do before that was Minions Blast. It was a maybe 5 minute wait to get on this new-to-us ride. It’s a little odd to stand, but I was impressed with how that worked. Unfortunately it took me about half the ride just to spot my own marker on the screens. My shots improved after that lol

After a restroom break, we headed to the show. The preshow area and storyline were both very odd to me. I don’t know if maybe they hold you in that area while the prior show is clearing out of the theater? It was SO long just standing there in a super crowded room. Then it takes forever to get all those people into the theater. And we didn’t really understand why the backstory was necessary at all.

We were toward the back of the crowd so we ended up on the far right side of the theater, toward the front. I don’t know if it was those specific seats or if this is true everywhere - but this show ended up being very impressive. I literally couldn’t tell at times if I was looking at real people or people on the giant screen. Very cool use of video combined with live action.

After the show, we headed toward ET. I don’t think my husband had ever been on this and I wanted him to see this original ride. The wait was probably 5-10 minutes.

We went on Transformers next and this had a little longer wait. I honestly couldn’t remember if I’d been on this before!

When that was done, it was after 7pm which meant the park was now closed for the OI meetup. The event includes free food and nonalcoholic drinks, available at most locations. But only a few opened at 7; the rest started at 8. My husband was hungry so we headed over to Richters, which opened early, and shared a burger, fries, and chocolate milkshake.

I know we rode Revenge of the Mummy too, but I can’t remember now if that was before or after we ate. I remember enjoying this one in the past, but it’s interesting viewing it now as a parent, thinking about if/when we will bring our kids to Universal. My oldest is tall enough for this, but I think it would be too scary until she’s quite a bit older!

It was about 7:30 when we headed toward Diagon Alley. Employees were now around the park, asking to see our OI wristbands. Also, I finally started to take a few pictures!
IMG_0930.jpeg

Escape from Gringotts was a walk-on and we then got in a short line at Florean Fortescue’s. They had bowls just set on the counter to grab and go. We picked butterbeer soft serve and strawberry/peanut butter and shared both as we wandered around the shops in Diagon & Knockturn Alleys.

Before we headed to Islands of Adventure, I wanted to try the mac & cheese and the bread pudding at Finnegan’s. We took this picture just to document how empty the park was feeling (bonus that it includes the Christmas tree)!
IMG_0934.jpeg

We enjoyed our food and then came back to Hogwarts Express around 8:30 to transfer to IoA.

IMG_0937.jpeg

We decided not to get in line for Hagrid’s yet because there was a Christmas projection show on the castle at 9pm. So we checked out some more stores. I was tempted to buy a sweatshirt because I was getting cold, but I managed to refrain and tough it out.

We enjoyed the show on the castle. I especially thought the twinkle lights hidden along the pathways were a nice touch.

We got in line for Hagrid’s at 9:09 and, as expected, this was the longest wait of the night. We didn’t time it but I’d guess it was 40-45 minutes. This was a lot more fun than I expected from the videos I’d seen! Wouldn’t say it’s my favorite roller coaster by any means, but it was fun!

Down side is that I came off the ride feeling slightly sick. I don’t normally experience motion sickness on rides. So I’m not sure if it was that or something else.

Side story…drinking the tap water in WDW has given me tummy troubles in the past. So I stick to bottled water during trips now. I thought that drinking fountain drinks like Coke had been fine in the past, but this trip I think they were starting to bother me too. Not causing as many problems, just causing some discomfort at times.

So my nausea might have been that, possibly combined with being tired. But I didn’t want to take chances, so I sadly decided I should skip HP & the Forbidden Journey this time. I got a free Gatorade at a snack stand and sat on a bench for a little while to see if I felt better.

My main priorities for this night had been Hagrid’s and Velocicoaster, since they were new to me, so we headed over there. I told myself that I’d be fine and that I was just getting overly anxious. Maybe for the best, it was down when we got there around 10:15. We sat and waited for a few minutes before deciding we’d come back and try later.

I suggested Skull Island, since I’d never been on it either. I figured it would be a good test of whether I was actually having motion sickness or not. I wasn’t overly impressed with it, except that animatronic at the end!

I made it through ok and drank the rest of my Gatorade. I knew I would regret not trying Velocicoaster so we backtracked and got in line shortly before 11.

IMG_0948.jpeg

IMG_0949.jpeg

I apologized in advance to my husband in case I ended up sick for real 😂 but I was fine! I mean I still didn’t feel great, but I didn’t get worse. This ride is definitely intense! I think I need another ride during daylight and when I feel better to decide how much I like it.

It was about 11:15 and I encouraged my husband to ride Hulk without me, while I went to pick up the last food we wanted to try.
IMG_0950.jpeg

I got the pizza tots, but only tried one or two bites myself. I waited at a table near Cinnabon until my husband was done and then we headed out. We got back to AKL around midnight. We had to roll down our back window and show our reservation for our Uber to get in at the gate.

I definitely thought this event was worth it and I’ve already been wondering when we could go again! I did 9 rides and my husband did 10, plus the Bourne show and the castle show. Before we learned that the meetup fell during our Disney trip, we had planned to get one-day park hoppers. Those would have only been slightly cheaper than the event tickets. And I feel like the short lines and free food were worth the higher price! I do think it would have been more fun as a standalone trip for the weekend, or toward the beginning of the trip, instead of at the end of an already tiring Disney trip!

We had a slower morning after our late night. It was our last full day and we’d be returning to Magic Kingdom.
IMG_1780.jpeg

IMG_1783.jpeg

We arrived there around 9:45 and had to make some decisions because everyone had different things they were wanting to do. We had skipped 7DMT earlier in the week, but we knew 4yo would really enjoy it. 7yo had been begging to ride Tron again. And my parents had been wanting a ride on the monorail. So we decided to divide and conquer! I took 7yo to Tron since my husband had joined her last time. This also worked out because I’d been the one to ride Seven Dwarves with 4yo last year, so now my husband got a turn with her. My parents took 2yo in the stroller and took the loop around on the monorail.

My husband and 4yo saw a short line for Mirabel, so they met her before they went to join the line at 7DMT shortly after 10. It took them about 45 minutes and they headed to the Teacups next.

7yo and I were also joining the Tron queue shortly after 10. It took us a bit longer and we were boarding about 10:55. Apparently the line at teacups was longish, because we were able to make it over there and 7yo joined the other 2 in line.
IMG_0951.jpeg

Meanwhile, my parents and 2yo had entered the park around 10:30 and decided to also ride the train the whole way around.

We hadn’t had much for breakfast, so my husband and kids were ready for lunch after the teacups. We all met up at Pinocchio’s at 11:40. I took about 2 bites of my chicken parm sandwich when my kids decided they needed the potty. I didn’t, however, know that the restrooms next door were being refurbished! We had to walk all the way to the Tangled restrooms and back, before I could finish my now-cold lunch. 🤦‍♀️

My mom mentioned Under the Sea as something she’d still like to ride, so we headed there next. This was a long wait! I think it was nearly an hour between getting in line and our next destination. Lines were long today, but we hadn’t paid for LLMP again, since we’d done so much our first day.
IMG_0957.jpeg

We thought a show would be a good option next and we hadn’t seen Philharmagic in the last several trips. I think we all enjoyed this!

At this point, we were getting hot and tired already. But 7yo and 4yo were asking to ride Space Mountain again. My husband was fine waiting in that line with them, so the 3 of them headed that way.

The rest of us went to Hall of Presidents (where 2yo took a nap) and then to see Country Bear Jamboree again.

With those done, everyone was satisfied for the day and we were ready to revisit the Kidani pool. We got back to our room by 4pm, to find lots of animals out!
IMG_1786.jpeg

IMG_1788.jpeg

We headed down to the pool around 4:30 and the big kids enjoyed the slide again. We tried to put 2yo in a life jacket and sent her down the little slide once. But she just wasn’t comfortable in any of the life jackets we tried on her. We might have to bring our own “puddle jumper” in the future.

We had dinner at the Maji pool bar around 6pm. My husband and I shared the gourmet grilled cheese and the spiced pork nachos. They made a point to tell him there’s meat in the grilled cheese. I guess maybe it’s on the menu that way there at the bar, but I don’t believe it said that on MDE. I just looked again and it *does* list bresaola. I had to google that just now and it’s a “dry-cured Italian beef”. Not sure if we missed that at the time or if it’s been updated, but either way I wasn’t a fan. But it was easy to pull out of the sandwich and I enjoyed the rest. Our kids had uncrustables and grilled cheese but I’m not sure what my parents ended up with.

I headed back up to the room with my parents and 2yo and this was the first time we discovered that we could go up an elevator closer to the pool (Rafiki I think?) instead of going through the lobby! We had been feeling so awkward every time we went through there in swimsuits, whether wet or dry. I wish this alternative was more clearly marked.

I took this picture of the full moon at 6:50pm and got a kick out of how much it looked like a sunrise instead.

We were awake early again and got our things all packed up. Our flights weren’t until after 5pm, so we had some time to spend at the resort and go to Disney Springs for a bit.

My kids were asking to go to the playground, so around 8:00, we went down to check if Kidani’s was open. As I suspected, it was closed since the pool wasn’t open yet.

There was some consolation when my husband surprised the kids with donuts from the gift shop. And we decided we had time to go over to Jambo’s playground before Disney Springs.

We let the kids play for a bit, saw some giraffes again, and caught a bus to Disney Springs around 10.
IMG_1792.jpeg

IMG_1794.jpeg

IMG_0978.jpeg

The kids picked out Minnie ears and my parents got some t-shirts at World of Disney. We walked by the Photopass Studio and there were only a few people waiting outside. But I didn’t know how many might be inside, so I asked the CM at the door and he guessed it would be about an hour wait. No time for that! But I’d really like to do this another time.

We checked out some of the trees and, after they’d had some leftovers for lunch, we got our kids Mickey bars one last time.
IMG_0979.jpeg

IMG_1801.jpeg

We wandered thru a few more stores.
IMG_1802.jpeg

I sent my husband this pic. It’s applicable, but I didn’t buy it.
IMG_0983.jpeg

My husband and I had been wanting to try Eet, as we’ve enjoyed watching Maneet on Guy’s Grocery Games and Tournament of Champions. My husband went to order our pizzas (chicken tikka and saag paneer) around 11:30 while the rest of us started slowly walking back to the busses.

We were taking our time thinking he was still waiting for our food, but it turns out he’d beaten us back to the bus stop and just missed one leaving around noon.
IMG_0990.jpeg

IMG_1815.jpeg

We ate our pizzas, which were now getting cold, at the bus stop. They were good, but wouldn’t been better hot!

We had to wait a little while back at the resort before we caught our Mears bus. Some of us needed the restroom and I was surprised that they only have single stall restrooms near the lobby. Unless I missed others! To make matters worse, they were servicing one of them when we got over there.

One last pic
IMG_0991.jpeg

We caught our Mears bus back to MCO, waited in long security lines, and our flight was delayed about 40 mins.

Once we landed, our plane sat on the tarmac waiting to get to the gate for probably 45 min. It was long enough for all 3 kids to fall asleep. We were finally home and in bed around 10pm.

Final thoughts:

I always come away feeling like I missed doing things that I’d planned on. But this is the first time we have annual passes, so I had a thought... Maybe between this past trip, and the 2 we have planned in 2025, I might actually be able to ride/see all the attractions & shows. (I can’t imagine it being possible on one trip, unless you’ve got multiple weeks!)

I created a list but excluded meet & greets, children’s areas/activities, and “streetmosphere”. From that list I already completed 44 (including Triceratop Spin, now closed & BTMRR, down for refurb) in November and have 57 left (excluding Test Track, as it’ll be closed during all 3 of our trips). I also just saw Astro Orbiter will be down, which I’m bummed about because it’s one I’ve actually never been on! I really have no idea if I’ll be able to accomplish this goal in 2025, but I’ll enjoy trying 😊

As for our 2025 plans, at our 11-month window, we booked Riviera for a week in June. At our 7-month window, we changed the last 3 nights to Cooper Creek.

Then we were discussing our 10th anniversary in April and thought, “we already have annual passes…” We saw availability for a duo studio at Riviera and booked that for 3 nights as well! But once the Poly Island Tower opened for everyone to book, we saw a duo studio there and switched to that. I’m very excited that we’ll have tried out 4 new resorts in our first year of DVC ownership!

We’re hoping to do the Keys to the Kingdom tour on our anniversary. I’ve also got a list narrowed down for where we’d like to eat for our anniversary dinner, but I’m trying not to set my heart on anything specific in case availability is limited due to Easter.

In June, we’ll likely try the Topolino’s character breakfast, but won’t have any other ADRs with the kids.

Thanks for reading along!

Thank you for sharing your trip w/us. What a fun time!

I agree that it’s very difficult to prioritize activities on a Disney trip but it’s a great issue to have! 🤣 Have a terrific time on all your future trips!

Thank you for sharing your pleasant TR! Really liked all your photos throughout. It's always interesting to me to see what each park guest will highlight in their photo selection.

By the way, your photos of the LEGOS displays in Disney Springs were really fun -- the Frozen display was one of my favs, but all them were great. :)
