They do. They will store breast milk, medications etc for you. Bell Services also use it if there is frozen food to transfer between resorts. So you could actually ask them to freeze ice packs too, if it was for medical reasons.
This information is very helpful.

There is no medical need to keep an ice pack frozen. There is a medical need to keep medicine cold, which free ice accommodates. The ice pack itself is not the medical need, it's one possible solution to the medical need.

First off keeping ice in a fridge all day will not stay frozen. So the medicine will not stay particularly chilled for long.

Secondly, for kids who insulin injections there is something called a “buzzy bee” they can use to numb the injection site. It’s basically a frozen ice pack with a vibrating element. So yes, you do need to keep this in a freezer for it to be effective. Maybe it’s not a medical imperative, but if you’re having 6 or 7 injections a day, it’s fairly important to them. And I would go so far as to say it is a medical need.

But we have already established the resort will keep stuff in a freezer for you.

Normal human interaction:
Guest: I need to keep my insulin cold. I brought ice packs but my room doesn't have a freezer.
Cast member: I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Complimentary ice can be found down the hall and in every QS restaurant.
Guest: Okay, thank you.

You can keep trying to pick on me all you like...it still displays an extreme lack of thinking things through on Disney's part, and it's an enormously simple fix to update web-site verbiage. I'm not arguing this just for guests' sakes, either...it's also an efficiency thing. People needing to stop and ask questions (or call the front desk) or request for their ice packs to be frozen is an unnecessary use of CMs' time. If any time spent by employees doing one thing can be saved so they can be doing something else, I'd call that a win for the business...small things like this can add up quickly when you're dealing with thousands of employees, rooms, and guests. (I've been told that many people in Facebook groups are telling others to just ask the resort to freeze their ice packs.)

But if there is a medical need free ice is not the answer, most hotels will provide a fridge and/or freezer in the room, or as others suggested find other ways to keep your medication cold.
Keeping medicine cold is the problem, loose ice is not the best solution.

Oh, brother...
What did people do in the past before they started toting in coolers and ice?

You've accurately summed up the way far too many people are today.
Could these people have survived in the 70's?

How was your previous comment about every hotel on the planet having an ice machine relevant then?

I thought the point was about guest expectations when they arrive at a hotel. As a Brit I had no expectation of a hotel having an ice machine or a freezer as neither is common over here.
most hotel web sites have an amenities section

If its a medical need the hotel should try to provide a freezer.
They do , in the comment section put the need for a appliance for medical they will provide one at no charge or they will allow you to use the main hotel refrigerator, I too travel the world for business and pleasure sometimes it is just a matter of asking

Ummm.....

Before this ban on loose ice, where did all those people with ice packs freeze their packs if their rooms had no freezer?

The ban on loose ice doesn't change this issue at all.

  • Don't want to dig through something they don't know what is in it. Safety hazard for the security guy if there is a sharp object for some reason.
  • Don't want to dig through an miss something as the loose ice moves around. Safety hazard if there is something hidden in the ice.
  • Don't want to dig through your loose ice and your kid ends of eating the ice and gets sick. Liability because dirty hands touched your ice.
It's a safety and liability issue, not trying to keep you from bringing in food or medication. Not just to inconvenience you. If anything, hopefully, speeds up the bag check process.

Ziplock bag of loose ice is fine, but ice packs will be your best friend. You can each get cups of ice in the park to replace it; just expect lines.

A thought, perhaps this is a a subtle way for them to try to lower the amount of coolers coming in. For instance, before the rule, you have a soft sided cooler, throw some ice in it and off you go. When you are done eating lunch you dump the ice, fold up the cooler and you are set. Now....you have to carry around and the ice packs all day. Ice packs that took up valuable space and weight when you packed to head to Florida. So maybe you decide it's not worth the hassle?
