No More Gray Stuff for Free?

Hi all,

I haven't seen this posted here, but elsewhere, folks have said that the Gray Stuff is no longer available at Be Our Guest (purportedly due to guests repeatedly requesting a "special occasion only" item) and they instead now offer Gray Stuff Cupcakes for a cost. Is this accurate? Personally, if this is the case, I'm happy as I think that's a better dessert than a plop of mousse.

I like the idea of a cupcake everyone can order. Everyone wanted to try the gray stuff anyway.
Agreed. I wanted gray stuff and had no problem paying for it, but I had to jump through hoops to get it. While I kind of like the attempt to have a sort of secret thing at Disney, the internet has destroyed the possibility of that ever happening again.

It seems like they'd solve their headache by either giving it to everybody or just putting it on the menu. It's just stupid to remain so stubborn.

We were there 2 weeks ago and, without our asking, our kids were given the grey stuff to "celebrate" their birthdays (the travel agent had put it in the reservation system). They were told that "The Beast" himself made it for them as a special treat and it is the only thing he makes. He takes great pride in it.

It was a fun treat, but the taste wasn't anything special. Just a small bit of colored mousse or whipcream. (See image)

It would be nice if they just gave it to everyone when they come to serve the deserts. It is like giving out mints at a restaurant. It is a nice little signature of the restaurant and can't cost them much. Let's face it they are making enough money off the family of four eating dinner that they could put it in.

I also would not have a problem with them developing a cupcake as a desert called "The Grey Stuff" that one could get. Either way "The Grey Stuff" in whatever form needs to be a part of the "Be Our Guest" experience.

We were there last week, and we got the gray stuff to celebrate my brother and sister in law's anniversary. I had added that it was their anniverary in our reservation, and they brought the gray stuff out for free without us asking.

My wife and I will be celebrating our 5 year anniversary when we are there in April. Sure free is always better but I'm willing to pay so we can say we had the gray stuff lol....that is if I can get a reservation.

Strawbwrry cream cheese cupcake is one of the best things I have ever tasted at Disney. I would have paid for the gray stuff though if offered.

What's the back story on this stuff? Is it just grey colored frosting that they pipe out and sprinkle some sugar pearls on top?

The entire special occasion thing really annoyed me to no end. I was looking forward to trying the gray stuff when I went to BOG and then was denied the request because my party was not celebrating a special occasion. I'd much rather have them have the cupcake and offer it to everyone even if you do have to pay. Although I definitely agree that it should be given out for free. I mean it's not like it's expensive or extremely time consuming to make it.

You are probably right, but I did like the idea of them trying to create and off menu, secret item.

Perhaps, but I don't think it was suppose to be a surprise. They gave it to the Mommy Bloggers and other Social Media folks when they did all their previews of BOG before the opening. They were all writing about it and telling people to ask for it. That sounds like they wanted people to talk about it to me.

Also it was on their own Disney Parks Blog in September 2012 (two months before soft openings of BOG started). http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/bl...t-be-our-guest-restaurant-in-new-fantasyland/ (See the response to post #4 - 'Chef's are working on a "magical moment" with a delicious version of the "gray stuff!"'

IMHO, it doesn't seem they were trying to make this "a secret item."

As silly as it is, you could "celebrate" anything. They ask you when you make the reservation and when you check in "Are you celebrating anything?"

"Celebrate Today!"

The initial release of information in 2012 had no mention of Grey Stuff and people went nuts. (see link below) Disney relented and let everyone in on what they were doing. Either they wanted to keep it secret or they overlooked the single most obvious menu item for the BoG menu. I tend to believe the secret angle.
