Just out of curiosity (and for those who can articulate opinions without being rude), what is it that makes people hate character dining? I guess the way I see it, if you want to eat somewhere, but not see characters, it's your prerogative. When a character approaches your table, you politely wave and smile and then go back to eating your food, conversing, etc... and the character gets the hint and moves on. I guess the biggest issue that I can see is that prices of the food most likely went up once these restaurants were converted to character dining- I'm not sure though? Not looking for an argument, just really wondering what the reasoning was
I personally do not mind character dining, however I do not like the prices that come with them. Sometimes I like to throw in a character meal just for fun, especially if its a character I don't particularly see too often, (except the Playhouse Disney one, I don't know who any of those characters are). But for me the real star of Disney dining has been the restaurants themselves. They're always beautiful and at one point each menu had such unique offerings they were almost like a Disney attraction themselves! Face it, eating in Cinderella Castle is cool enough without seeing Cinderella there.
Character dining made it virtually impossible to just be able to eat in the castle and the dining plan made it almost unaffordable as well.
So I would not like to see character dining completely disappear, I would just like Disney to make a sincere effort to make the restaurants on property more accessible to locals who decide on a whim to head over to Disney for dinner or lunch. I guess changing the window for dining reservations from 180 days to 90 days helps but I think more can be done.
