Can anyone offer advice on whether it is better to call Casting and make an appointment or just show up a the Casting office? (better to be seen or heard?)

I just went there an applied. Althoug you may want to make an appt, it may save alot of sitting around until they get to you, there can be alot of people there applying for jobs ands it could be along wait.
