Then again the Yoshi's Island franchise was known to be aimed at the younger demographic.
Yoshi’s Island? The game with the menacing Giant Bowser that ran at the screen while rock music played in the background?

Real talk, I had a hard time with that fight when I was 10. And the sequel to the SNES Classic, Yoshi’s Island DS, was even harder. New Island was kind of a joke. But overall, I’d say the Yoshi’s Island is a franchise aimed at the more experienced Mario players. Yoshi’s Story and the new crafted games? Yeah I guess those ones appeal to toddlers. But I see no reference to the arts and crafts games here (aside from those obnoxious sound effects).

There’s no beating around the bush. This ride is disappointing. And fairly inconsistent. Is this suppose to be a Yoshi’s Island ride? You’d think so from the interior scene, with the intro music, Kamek, the babies, Poochie, and the little houses. Although the previous scene had a vignette right out of Super Mario 3D World.

But then, we leave the interior scene, and the desert theme from NSMB Wii/U is playing? You move into a jungle scene with the one off Baby Yoshis from NSMBU, but now the Captain Toad theme is playing? Oh cool, there’s Captain Toad, I love me some Captain Toad...but what does he have to do with Yoshi?

The closest thing to a connection here is Galaxy 2 and Odyssey. Oh well, still pretty cool. We pass some Piranha Plants, under a Thwomp annnd it’s done? Seriously? Where are the other Yoshi’s? Where’s Baby Bowser?

It’s like they tried to make this both a general Mario ride AND a Yoshi’s Island ride, but with only 10 feet of track. It’s more Peoplemover than dark ride...if the Peoplemover only made one tiny loop.

Seriously, what were they thinking?

i think its literally a ride for 3-6 year olds and thats fine. We adults get a major mario kart ride, a cool walkthrough underground level, a bunch of interactive stuff, a huge restaraunt and store....All in all a pretty swell addition. From what I hear they are already building the donkey kong expansion with rollercoaster so in a couple years that land will have 2 major rides and a couple kiddie rides.

Are people forgetting that Japan will be adding Donkey Kong and that Donkey Kong will be in Florida from day 1 of opening? We’ll have two major rides and a small ride. That’s fine IMO.

Not everyone that likes Mario also likes DKC.

Granted...I do. Tropical Freeze is far better than 3D World. DKC2 and Returns are also phenomenal. And the Minecart ride excites me more than Mario Kart.

I just don’t see any need in defending a bad ride. However unlikely it is, maybe feedback could improve other versions of the ride at the other resorts?

Add me to the list of DK fans...though I have yet to play tropical freeze. Excited for the coaster. DK has some great music.

Mario Kart naturally excites me way more though.

I am sorry if this has already been answered (I tried to look but did not see), has there been a definitive decision as to whether or not Universal is still building this in the yet to be built EPic Universe or is due to Covid it is not back to Toon Lagoon (is that the right name?) or the existing studios park in FL? I thought I heard rumor that Epic Universe was shelved for the time being but that Universal wanted/needed to pull the trigger soon on Mario building in the states. Anyone know? Thanks so much...

It’s still currently slated for Epic Universe. Toon Lagoon was not going to be replaced by Nintendo. Kids Zone in Universal Studios Florida was first to be replaced by Mario and Donkey Kong, then by Pokémon. Lost Continent was to be replaced by The Legend of Zelda.

Just a standard licensing deal would have a force majeure clause and such arrangements can be renegotiate. Some of the dates people throw around, like before 2024, would have been cutting it very close with Epic Universe’s late 2023 opening and would be very difficult to reach now.

Tropical Freeze is not only good, it's quite possibly the finest 2D platformer ever made. It really puts the recent 2D Mario efforts to shame. They're fine enough, but very by-the-numbers and uninspired.

I have been meaning to play it...but as of late my backlog has exploded. I’ll get around to it eventually. Love a good platformer have heard great things about it.
