Nikon is rumored to be currently working on a new full frame mirrorless camera. Here is what I know so far:

  • full frame camera
  • mirrorless / mirrorless-styled
  • the camera will be small (about the same size as the Olympus E-M1)
  • no EVF
  • regular F mount
  • currently being field tested
  • the official announcement is expected in late 2015 or early 2016

What's the point? Sounds like too little too late. I can already use my Nikon lenses with a Sony FF Mirrorless camera and get a EVF to boot... Only benefit I might get from a Nikon version is maybe an autofocus that works with my existing lenses... But then I'm guessing that Nikon may likely no include a motor drive so my prefered Nikon lenses would still be manual focus... So in the end, I don't see any point... Sony already provided me with the same thing only I can also use my Leica, Canon, Nikon, whatever lens on the Sony... If Nikon create a camera that is mirrorless and made for a Nikon lens it will have a distance that will preclude me using it for most brands.

why is the word "f l a n g e" blocked with *******? Is this some new dirty word I wasn't aware of?

@thomas998 which Sony are you shooting? I have the NEX-7 and am considering going FF.

Mirrorless I have the nex-5 used to have an a850 but the sensor went kerflooey... Kind of made me wary of dropping huge amounts on cameras... but am tempted to go FF again with an A7S if they would drop the price a bit... At the moment I'm using a speedbooster on the nex-5 so it has become my almost full frame when I'm using my Nikon lenses on it. Maybe if Nikon hurries up it will force Sony to lower their prices just a bit and I can take the plunge.

To stay competitive, which in the end only benefits the consumer.

You shoot Fuji mirrorless too, right?

I havent noticed any issues whatsoever with a crop sensor.

Interesting what Nikon might be doing, but more curious to see what Sony has to offer tomorrow in the new RX100...also waiting for A6000 successor to see if I'll jump ship from 4/3.

But my point was that it isn't competitive, its a camera that is less competitive. I would love it if Nikon came out with a camera that was comparable to the Sony A7 line, it would generate some competition and likely push prices down... but the camera they seem to be coming out with wont be a direct competitor and therefore wont help the consumers that much.

Agreed, but they have to start SOMEWHERE. Plus the details on the camera are vague so far...Nikonrumors isn't always right, sad to say.
